Heading into Labor Day weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Steam train rides in Carson City and Virginia City will be available Saturday through Sunday. CARSON CITY — Finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation show initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 8,032 for the week ending August 29, down 826 claims, or 9.3 percent, compared to last week’s total of 8,858 claims. This is the fewest initial claims filed since the week ending March 14. Through the week ending August 29, there have been 670,400 initial claims filed in 2020, 662,368 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

This is the fewest initial claims filed since the week ending March 14. Through the week ending August 22, there have been 662,510 initial claims filed in 2020, 640,716 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

The COVID-19 Mitigation and Management Task Force met Thursday with seven counties flagged last week for having an elevated risk of transmission of the coronavirus. A 30-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Wednesday for suspicion of felony domestic battery with strangulation and drug possession with intent to sell among other alleged offenses.

The Mile High Jazz Band Association presents a jazz-related drive-in movie, “High Society,” on Wednesday, August 19, and Thursday, August 20, as part of the 2020 Jazz & Beyond Festival.

LAKE TAHOE — A new control tool for aquatic invasive plants that clog waterways, reduce water clarity and provide cover for other invasive species at Lake Tahoe continues to show impressive results in its third year of testing. The tool is a light array mounted under a working barge, which trolls through the marina dousing the plants on the lake bottom with ultraviolet-C light.

A 66-year-old Bristol Bay, NV man was arrested in the 3200 block of South Carson Street for grand larceny and possession of stolen property after stealing a car from a car dealership.

A 40-year-old Carson City woman was arrested for felony child abuse and neglect, violation of a Temporary Protective Order, and a contempt of court warrant.

According to the arrest report, Maria Olvera was arrested Thursday afternoon in the 2700 block of Dori Wy. by Special Enforcement Team deputies after they were dispatched on a warrant service to Olvera’s home.
