Governor honors Nevada Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence advocate for 30 years of service

Sue Meuschke, executive director for the Nevada Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence (NCEDSV), was honored today with a proclamation from the office of the governor for her 30 years of service as “a dedicated and talented community leader, collaborator and advocate for survivors” for the State of Nevada, advocating for victims of domestic and sexual violence and increasing awareness of the issues.

Carson City Supervisors to discuss contracts, grants, appointments at Feb. 7 meeting

On Thursday, Feb. 7 the Board of Supervisors and Redevelopment Authority will hold a meeting beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, located at 851 East William Street.

Under discussion at the February meeting will be purchases and contracts, appointments in the Redevelopment Authority Citizen’s Community, grants for Parks and Recreation, and more.

Three more Carson City teachers earn National Board Certification

The Carson City School District is pleased to announce three more teachers earned certification from the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. The NBPTS is widely considered to be the highest professional recognition for educators and includes a 5 percent pay increase in acknowledgement of accomplished teaching.

Senator Square: Winterfest 2019 begins at Carson High School

No high school on the planet has as many events regularly happening as that of Carson High School, and one of the biggest of the year, Winterfest, begins Feb. 1. This year, Leadership class has determined the theme will be Winterflix, a play on the popular Netflix streaming service that allows customers to watch a wide variety of award-winning TV shows, movies, documentaries, and more on thousands of internet-connected devices.

Carson City job growth flat in December, Reno and Vegas continue to make gains

Job growth held steady in Carson City during the month of December, actually falling 100 jobs below seasonal expectations while Reno and Las Vegas continued to add jobs, according to figures released Wednesday by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

A murder investigation involving slayings in Reno and Gardnerville in which a 19-year-old man was arrested Saturday in Carson City in connection to the killings has caught the attention of U.S. President Donald Trump who turned to Twitter on Monday to push for a wall he wants built along the United States and Mexico border.

After 5 years and more than 1500 cats and kittens saved, Catmandu is hosting their first ever big event on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at the Carson Nugget Casino, 507 Carson Street, Carson City! “Caturday Night Out,” a fun-filled night for animal lovers, will include dinner, music and dancing with live band One Way Street, door prizes, a raffle, and auction.

Doors open at 5 pm. A buffet dinner featuring both a vegetarian and meat option starts at 6 pm. Emcee Monty Wolf of KOH radio takes the stage after dinner for the raffle, prizes and auction or silent auction.

Senator Square: Solutions classes through CHS offer extra help to all students

Solutions is in full swing, and Carson High School is the only high school in Nevada with this amazing grant. The grant money provides out-of-school-time supports for at-risk students. At risk, a broad term in this grant, includes students who are at risk of not passing a class, at risk of becoming truant, or just in need of a safe-place after school.

Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range open Sundays only for now

Due to verified reports involving the likelihood of stray bullets entering into populated areas originating from the discharge of firearms at the Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range, a temporary operating schedule was implemented along with the increased presence of Range Safety Officers made available by the Carson Rifle and Pistol Club, the city’s non-profit partner for the operation of the range.

Rain will continue throughout the morning, changing to snow showers later this afternoon, which has prompted a Winter Weather Advisory for the lower valley areas such as Carson City and Carson Valley. Forecasters urge motorists not to travel into the Sierra today as several feet of heavy snow will impact roadways and travel.

Carson City weather: Feet of snow expected in Sierra, 1.5 inches of rain possible in valleys

A major winter storm will bring blizzard conditions and several feet of snow to Lake Tahoe and Sierra into Thursday night with heavy rain around the Carson City and lower valley regions, according to the National Weather Service.

Douglas County Sheriff: Suspect in Gardnerville area murders remains at large

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference Monday regarding two homicides that occurred within four days of each other in the Gardnerville area. Both murders were committed within a mile of each other in the Gardnerville Ranchos area and the suspect remains at large.

Loyd to leave Carson City Library for tech job

After five years of leading the Carson City Library, Director Sena Loyd is closing that chapter.

She is leaving in February to take a job in the private sector.
