Sierra Resort at Lake Tahoe hosts Nov. 2 job fair for upcoming ski and snowboard seasonal employment

Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort will host a job fair Nov. 2 to hire seasonal positions for the coming winter season. The fair will be held at the Sierra Resort base lodge near South Lake Tahoe, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Positions range from full-time November through April to Weekends and Holidays only. Department teams will interview and hire seasonal workers with positions in the areas of Lift Operations, Retail, Food and Beverage, Adult Ski and Snowboard School, Wild Mountain Children’s Center, Blizzard Mountain, Guest Services, Parking, Rental and Repair Services and Ticket Administration.

Lake Tahoe woman hits $1.4 million slot jackpot at MontBleu

A South Shore Lake Tahoe woman won $1.4 million at MontBleu Resort Casino and Spa Wednesday, the largest single win in the property’s seven year history.

The lucky Tahoe local, in her 30s who wished to remain anonymous, hit the big payload on the IGT Wheel of Fortune® progressive slot for a total of $1,407,656.68 Wednesday evening in the High Limit Room. The winner played $100 before hitting the jackpot.

“Dreams do come true,” said Brett Hunn, director of marketing at MontBleu Resort Casino and Spa. “This is MontBleu biggest slot hit and I’m betting there’s more to come.”

Northern Nevada Fire Wives host open house, barbecue on Saturday

The Northern Nevada Fire Wives will hold their first fund-raising barbeque from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 12, at the Carson City Fire Department at 777 South Stewart Street, to raise funds to support firefighters and their families when tragedy strikes them.

Lake Tahoe ski resorts Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood to hold October job fairs

Job seekers are invited to have an experience of a lifetime this winter in Lake Tahoe as Heavenly Mountain Resort, Northstar California Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort hire a combined total of 2,300 seasonal employees for the 2013-2014 winter season.

Heavenly will hire 800 seasonal employees. Northstar will hire 1,100, and Kirkwood will hire 400. Three job fairs are scheduled throughout October, giving candidates an opportunity to meet with managers and find the best-suited jobs.

Carson City 'Beat the Flu Blues' campaign a success

Carson City Health and Human Services is pleased to announce the success of the 2012–13 Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Community Outreach Campaign, “Beat the Flu Blues.”

The agency conducted 69 community vaccination clinics that provided more than 10,700 influenza vaccinations throughout the quad-county area of Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties. Our local clinic provided an additional 1,259 flu vaccinations. In all, CCHHS increased the number of flu doses given during the 2012 season by 10 percent.

Outdoors with Don Q: Having fun at Lake Almanor, Calif.

Elaine and I just returned from a fun-filled trip to Lake Almanor, which is located in Northern California near the towns of Chester and Westwood.

Our trip was the result of a chance meeting with Gary and Birgitta Metz of Carson City. We met them at Duke's Steak House in the Fandango Casino, when our dinner party was there in early May to celebrate my birthday on May 08, and his dinner party was there to celebrate his birthday on May 06.

WNC Celebrates 10th Anniversary of Jack C. Davis Observatory

More than a decade ago, a Western Nevada College physics professor’s dream, a desire by college students to learn about astronomy, and the Carson City community's willingness to help make dreams come true, all converged to create the Jack C. Davis Observatory.

Now, WNC and the observatory staff and volunteers have planned a stellar celebration from May 2-15 to commemorate 10 years of science and discovery in Nevada’s capital city.

Nevada March unemployment rises, Carson City drops

Nevada’s seasonal adjusted unemployment rate went up slightly in March to 9.7 percent, up from 9.6 percent in February, the state's unemployment department reports.

Carson City’s rate dropped slightly from 10.7 percent in February, to 10.6 percent, but continues to have the highest rate of Nevada metro areas. However, Carson City is down considerably from 12.2 percent a year ago.

Nevada climate, environmental data network to inform research, community

RENO, Nev. – Climate data from 13 geospatial monitoring stations across the Great Basin are being made available to researchers, educators and the public by a group of researchers from the Nevada System of Higher Education. They have developed the long-term climate monitoring network specifically designed to measure variations in climate change and are now working to broaden the network’s reach to include the all types of hazard monitoring in the region.

Outdoors with Don Q: A few more days left to fish many California waters

This my annual reminder that many California waters will close to fishing on Thursday, November 15.
That’s only a few days from now, so if you want to fish any of them, you better hustle because you are rapidly running out of time.
Those waters will not re-open until the last Saturday in April next year (April 27, 2013), and that is a long, long time to wait to wet your line.

Nevada’s Jobless Rate Declines To 11.8 Percent In September

CARSON CITY – Nevada’s unemployment rate fell to 11.8 percent in September, a decline of three-tenths of a percentage point from the 12.1 percent rate reported for August and a significant improvement from September 2011’s reading of 13.6 percent, a state agency reported today.

The seasonally-adjusted rate remains above the 11.6 percent figure reported in May, which was a three-year low.

Nevada Holiday Hiring Outlook Positive For 2012

CARSON CITY – Nevada retailers are expected to add more than 4,000 seasonal positions through December, the Retail Association of Nevada (RAN) said today.

The estimate is based on an assumption that hiring in 2012 will be comparable to last year, when the state added 4,100 retail positions between September and December for a 3.2 percent increase in total employment in the sector.

Northern California warden appointed Chief

Michael P. Carion has been named chief of the Law Enforcement Division at the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG).
Carion, a lifelong hunter and angler, has been a DFG warden for more than 30 years. He also teaches waterfowl enforcement techniques and waterfowl identification to cadets at DFG’s academy.
“Throughout my career, I have made every effort to include hunting, fishing and environmental stakeholders in the decision-making process,” said Carion. “I have found we get much better results by working together.”

Third annual Lake Tahoe Restaurant Week set for October 7-14
