St. Mary's Art and Retreat Center's new solar array built by Black Rock Solar

From the front, St. Mary’s Art and Retreat Center is the epitome of Virginia City’s Old West heritage. But take a peak around back and you’ll find an energy source that’s anything but old-fashioned.

Reno nonprofit Black Rock Solar just completed construction of a 110-panel ground-mount photovoltaic array at the National Historic Landmark, built in 1875. The 30-kW array will generate enough energy to cover almost all the electricity costs of the former Comstock hospital.

Nevada 150 events planned locally, statewide throughout May

In the music industry, there is often a preference to try and quickly define an artist and his music by placing him in one or two genre categories. The problem is a preconceived model doesn't fit someone like Dwight.

Douglas Commission looks to appoint retired Carson City Manager Larry Werner as interim county chief

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners approved moving forward with approaching Larry Werner, retired Carson City Manager and resident of Douglas County, as a possible Interim County Manager. The Interim County Manager will serve over the next several months during the recruitment process for a new County Manager.

The Board discussed several options for interim management at its meeting at Lake Tahoe on Thursday, March 20, 2014, including appointment of qualified individuals from within and outside the organization.

The event brings thousands to downtown Carson City marking the city's official kick off of the Christmas and holiday season. Festivities begin at the capitol grounds, 5:30 p.m. where more than 300 voices of the Carson City 5th Grade Music Students Singing Ensemble will provide musical entertainment.

The inaugural Empty Bowls Project kicks off its campaign for the Carson City area Dec. 6 at the downtown skating rink during the Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights.

Empty Bowls is a grass roots movement to end hunger. Local artists young and old donate handmade bowls. Restaurants donate soup and food. For a minimum $10 donation you choose a bowl and fill it with food.

Outdoors with Don Q: Why five adults were crying Monday and Tuesday

For the record, four adults (Chuck and Barbara Van Hise, plus Don and Elaine Quilici, all of Carson City) were crying at the Van Hise home on the afternoon of October 21. And, then the following afternoon, we would be joined by my son Jim, crying at his home.

Why was everyone crying on those two fateful days in late October?
Was it because someone had died? Nope.
Was it because someone had a serious illness? Nope.
Was it because someone had a serious injury? Nope.
Was it because there had been some bad news? Nope.

Carson City Harvest Club to receive grant to produce locally grown food for local families

The Carson City Harvest Hub, along with food production programs in Douglas and Lyon counties, have been awarded funding through the Nevada Department of Agriculture, officials announced Monday.

Grant awards amounting to $250,730 will go to 13 programs throughout Northern Nevada for crop research, education marketing and production.

Carson City Sheriff's Office flag dedication has deep roots

The Carson City Sheriff’s Honor Guard and Chaplain dedicated a new flag pole at the administrative complex on Wednesday. The ceremony kicked off a second presentation where three deputies were awarded the “Life Saving Medal” for assertive medical actions resulting in the saving of a life. Deputy Matt Putzer, John Hitch, and Chris Ramos all received medals for their service. The ceremony was concluded as Deputy Bill Richards was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.
