Human-caused Cascade Fire holds at 30 acres in Desolation Wilderness

The Cascade Fire burning near Snow Lake on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe continues to hold at 30 acres as of Thursday afternoon, according to the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. The wildfire is located entirely in the Desolation Wilderness. No structures are threatened.

The 20th annual Street Vibrations 2014 motorcycle rally begins Wednesday

The 2014 Street Vibrations motorcycle rally begins Wednesday and runs through Sunday, Sept. 28. The primary events will be located in Reno and Sparks but other events are scheduled in Carson City, Virginia City and Lake Tahoe.

This run is the 20th year for the Street Vibrations event and organizers are expecting between 50,000 and 100,000 participants. With the influx of visitors to the area, the number of traffic related issues are expected to increase.

Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through Sept. 28

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Sept. 22-28, 2014. Robinson Street between Curry and Carson Streets will be open in an eastbound direction only on Monday, Sept. 22, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The road will be closed in both directions on Tuesday, Sept. 23, and Thursday, Sept. 24, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Detours will be provided.

June Lake fire in Mono County under control, Highway 158 reopened

UPDATE THURSDAY 3:40PM: Go here for the latest on the King Fire. June Lake Road was to be opened at 2 p.m. Thursday. Here's a news brief from Mono County Sheriff's Office.

UPDATE: June Lake Fire Road Closures. The fire remains controlled with small hot spots. Fire crews continue to work on these hot spots.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) will begin letting people through Hwy 158 beginning at 1:00 PM with the advisement of fire activity and equipment on the roadway. Please be aware and respect all fire equipment, personnel and hazards in or on the roadway. Think safety first for our fire and law enforcement personnel and for yourselves. Please use caution when traveling through the area.

Hwy 158 is anticipated to be fully open at 2:00 PM. Again, please be mindful of fire personnel and equipment and all first responders and law enforcement in the area. Travel safe!

UPDATE 330PM: According to a Tweet this afternoon from Caltrans, Highway 50 is back open but the westbound No. 2 lane will remain closed overnight because of ongoing King Fire issues. A portion of the highway and artery for traffic into and out of South Lake Tahoe and Stateline, had been closed since Tuesday, from Sly Park Road to Fresh Pond, due to burning trees falling on the road.

Meanwhile, the June Fire burning in Mono County is estimated to be 65 acres and 50 percent contained.

Kingsbury Grade reopened, firefighters make significant progress on wildfire

UPDATE 10PM: Kingsbury Grade has re-opened. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office says the wildfire is around around 4.5 acres.

UPDATE: 6:40: Fire crews and aircraft have halted the forward advancement of a wildland fire Wednesday night off Kingsbury Grade in Douglas County. Firefighters from the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, the Nevada Division of Forestry, and local fire districts, including East Fork, Tahoe Douglas, Lake Valley, and South Lake Tahoe responded to the Kingsbury Fire.

Douglas County briefing on Wednesday flash flooding in Fish Springs area

Douglas County agencies and departments are currently working on flood recovery measures in the Fish Springs area as a result of the Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014 flash flood event.

The following information is to assist citizens affected by the recent flooding and to provide information on public safety concerns. This incident produced hazardous condition due to the amount of water and dark evening hours and created safety concerns and inhibited immediate damage assessment.

With the recent rain and other weather conditions around the Silver State, the Nevada Department of Transportation is reminding motorists that they can receive free, up-to-the-minute state road updates through 511 Nevada Travel Info.

Motorists simply dial 511 or log onto www.nvroads.com before driving for current traffic and road incident, weather and construction reports. Out-of-state callers dial 1-877-NV-ROADS to receive the same service.

Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through July 27

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of July 20-27, 2014: There will be road work on the section of Timberline Drive between both intersections with Prospect Drive. This section will be open to local traffic only, and through traffic will be detoured onto Prospect Drive.

There will be utility work primarily in the street shoulder on weekdays at the following locations. Minimal delays are possible.

— Gulch Road between Wagon Wheel Road and Combs Canyon Road.
— Lakeview Road west of Combs Canyon Road.
— Sandy Circle.

NHP: Motorists should avoid using Highway 50 over Spooner

Due to the Clear Creek fire in Carson City, first responders have been called back out to the scene to monitor the path and speed of the fire and to prepare for any road closures that may happen. Nevada Department of Public Safety is currently on scene to prepare to close specific roads if the fire is not contained as to keep the public safe.

Sierra Front: Residents can return to homes, Clear Creek fire remains at 300 acres

UPDATE 440PM: Firefighters have contained the fire by 35 percent. Resources have managed to keep a hold of the fire. There were two small slop overs that are being held in place by helicopter and crew work.

UPDATE 1020AM: All roads are now open. Residents can go back to their homes, however be alert and aware of the fire, and weather patterns in the area. The evacuation center at the Carson City Community Center is now closed. Animals can still be taken to Fuji Park.

UPDATE 926AM: The Clear Creek fire remains at 300 acres, 25 percent contained as of 9 a.m., according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. No injuries reported. Vista Grande to Golf Course Drive is only open to residents. Around 40 homes in Clear Creek subdivision are under voluntary evacuation. Residents can go to the Carson City Community Center. Animals can be taken to Fuji Park.

The weather seems to be favoring the firefighters battling the Clear Creek Fire today. According to CarsonWeather.com, winds are expected to be light, with humidity above 60 percent.

The northwest flank of the fire (the steep side on the south side of Clear Creek Canyon) is still active. As a precaution, structure engines are staging in the Jacks Valley and Clear Creek subdivisions.

Containment of Clear Creek fire unknown

East Fork Fire and Paramedic District are currently in a unified command with Carson Fire and the U.S. Forest Service. The fire started from a lightning strike on Forest Service land. The fire quickly spread in the dry brush north of Jacks Valley Road and south of Clear Creek Road on a mountain side.

Fire crews quickly responded to the scene and air suppression was used until darkness. Hand Fire Crews will remain on scene fighting this fire through the night. Fire equipment will be staged in the neighbor surrounding the fire for residential structure protection if needed.

26 arrested, 8 for DUI over holiday weekend in Douglas; 18 arrests in South Lake Tahoe

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reports that the 2014, 4th of July celebration in Douglas County went well. The celebratory crowds in the Stateline, Round Hill and Zephyr Cove areas of Lake Tahoe were large and with exception of a few altercations in the downtown Casino Core area, Nevada Beach and Zephyr Cove Beach, the crowd was relatively well behaved. Motorists were cooperative with the road closures and traffic control required for the fireworks display.

Hello fellow anglers, winter came back and stirred up the fishing. I now think that is behind us, for at least a week or so. This time of year never trust Mother Nature and always be prepared. I have been caught off guard back in the high country as well as an overnighter at Indian Creek Reservoir.

Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through June 22

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of June 16-22, 2014. Vista Grande Boulevard will continue to be closed from Topsy Lane to Old Clear Creek Road with a signed detour. There will also be intermittent delays on Old Clear Creek Road near the intersection with Vista Grande Boulevard.

There will be a lane shift on Northridge Drive and the sidewalk will be closed on the north side of the street near the intersection with Roop Street from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.

Legends of the West Bike and Car Fest in downtown Carson City today and Saturday

Legends of the West Bike and Car Fest returns to Carson City today through Saturday. The motorcycle and car festival features events, contests, live entertainment, a show and shine, breakfast, raffles and awards. The show brings thousands of motorcycle and car enthusiasts to Carson City annually.

Featured again this year will be the Carson City Sheriff's Office Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge. The 11th annual event will begin on Friday with highly skilled motor officers from across the country competing for top honors.

Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through June 15

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of June 9-15, 2014. There will be lane closures due to pavement maintenance on Highway 395, Carson Street from Fairview Drive to Highway 50 West (Spooner Junction) during the night hours of 8 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. beginning Sunday night, June 8, through Friday morning, June 13.
 
The Legends of the West event will begin Friday, June 13, and continue through Saturday, June 14.  Road closures will occur from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Sunday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. The following roads will be closed and detours will be signed:

Lake Tahoe basin fuelwood permits available May 19

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will begin the sale of fuelwood permits at the South Shore office on Monday, May 19, 2014, and at the North Shore office on Wednesday, May 21, 2014. Permits cost $20 per cord, with a two-cord minimum purchase and a limit of 10 cords per household.

Road closures, utility work in Carson City lined up through Dec. 22

Inching closer to the Christmas holidays, the Carson City Public Works department has a number of projects it will be working on now through Dec. 22.

There will be lane closures at the following locations Monday through Friday. Traffic control measures will be in effect. There will also be sidewalk closures and detours will be signed.

The closures will be at the following places:
Westbound Long Street between Roop Street and Marian Street.
Northbound Roop Street between Adams Street and Beverly Drive.

Doug Busey fishing report for Carson, Douglas and Alpine County area rivers, lakes and streams

Hello fellow anglers, Time is running short if you plan on fishing the rivers in Alpine County.
November 15, 2013 is the last day to fish on any of the rivers in California, with the exception of a few that will remain open to catch and release.

In our local area, the east fork of the Carson River from Hangman's Bridge to the Nevada state line is on that list.
Check your CDFW regulation book for other tributaries that will remain open. All of the lakes in Inyo and Mono Counties will also close on November 15th. 

2,500 Christmas tree cutting permits in the Lake Tahoe Basin go on sale Nov. 18

Christmas tree cutting permits in the Lake Tahoe Basin go on sale Nov. 18 with only 2,500 permits available on a first come, first serve basis, the U.S. Forest Service announced Thursday.

Permits cost $10 each (cash or check only, no credit cards) with a limit of two permits per family. Permit holders may choose from a variety of pine, fir or cedar in designated cutting areas.

Forest roads close, wood cutting permit sales in Lake Tahoe Basin end Nov. 22

Many U.S. Forest Service roads in the Lake Tahoe Basin have closed or will close soon. Meanwhile, fuelwood permit sales will end Nov. 22 with the last day of cutting on Nov. 24.

Fuelwood permits cost $20 per cord, with a two-cord minimum purchase and a limit of 10 cords per household.

Forest roads and gates began closing in late October for soil protection and public safety. Some cutting areas may not be accessible by vehicle in areas where gates have closed. Permit holders should check whether road closures are in effect and should not go behind closed gates.

Here is the Carson City road construction and maintenance report for the week of Sept. 9-15. On Saturday, Sept. 14, Carson Street will be closed between Musser Street and Telegraph Street from 4 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. due to a special event. Detours will be signed and traffic control will be in place.
