Economic forum highlights resurgence of the Northern Nevada economy

In its ongoing campaign to educate area real estate agents and community members on the changing economic environment in Northern Nevada, the Reno Tahoe International Council will hold an Economic Forum this Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015.

Nevadans encouraged to test their homes for radon, kits available through February

Free radon test kits are available from Dec. 1 through Feb. 28 at University of Nevada Cooperative Extension offices and partner offices statewide. Nevadans are encouraged to take advantage of this free offer to test their homes for this radioactive, colorless gas that comes from the ground, accumulates in homes and can cause lung cancer.

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates 21,000 Americans die each year from radon-caused lung cancer, killing more people than secondhand smoke, drunk driving, falls in the home, drowning or house fires.

Leslie Cain named Carson City director for the Sierra Nevada Association of Realtors

Leslie Cain, of RE/MAX Realty Affiliates Carson City, has been named to her second term as the Carson City Director for the Sierra Nevada Association of Realtors.

In this role, she represents the Carson City community at the Association's monthly board of directors meetings. She also actively participates in important decisions regarding disbursement of charitable funds to non-profit organizations, scholarships to local high school students, as well as many other key topics affecting the Association and its members.

Reno real estate sales climb in third quarter

The Reno-area real estate market continues to rebound in the third quarter, with a 9 percent rise in sales volume and 14 percent jump in median home price, according to a Lake Tahoe-based real estate firm.

Home prices in Carson Valley were up, with a 10 percent jump in median price ($275,500) and six percent rise in average price ($315,115). Sales volume, however, was down three percent and units sold was down eight percent.

Lake Tahoe home sales down, but prices remain steady from January to June

Home sales throughout Lake Tahoe continued to slow throughout the first half of the year, while home prices remained steady, according to a quarterly report released by Lake Tahoe-based real estate company Chase International. Despite an 18 percent decline in overall sales volume, the figures are still significantly higher than those of 2012.

TRPA launches online exchange to help property owners restore sensitive land

Lake Tahoe, CA/NV - The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency has launched an online marketplace for property owners, realtors and land banks to use to increase the environmental improvements that come from transferring commonly-traded development rights in the Lake Tahoe region.

The new, online Transfer of Development Rights Exchange allows buyers and sellers to create postings, explains transfer incentives and eligibility requirements, and makes it all viewable on an interactive map. As the TDR Exchange is used more, it will also track market trends.

The 5th Annual Cancer Sucks 5k held last month and presented by The Sierra Nevada Association of REALTORS® and PrimeLending was a huge success! The event brought out over 320 walkers and runners, many adorned in the color pink in honor of breast cancer awareness month. The proceeds from the event totaled close to $8,000 and will benefit local cancer patients through The Carson Tahoe Health Foundation.

Greater Nevada Announces New Consultant

Greater Nevada Mortgage (GNM) has brought on Tracy McLeod to serve as a Mortgage Consultant in Douglas County. Her diverse background encompasses more than 20 years of experience in mortgage servicing, including title, escrow and loan origination.

McLeod is an active member of the Council of Residential Specialists, the Women’s Council of Realtors and the Sierra Nevada Association of Realtors. Women are 'buying in' to home ownership

Mother’s Day is this Sunday and in honor of mother’s, daughters, sisters, aunts, and all women, it is interesting to note how far women have come in just a few short decades when it comes to home ownership.

In 1968, the federal Fair Housing Act was passed making it illegal to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion or national origin when renting or selling a home. In 1974, the Fair Housing Act was amended to prohibit housing discrimination on the basis of sex. Prior to that time, women (as well as minorities) found it nearly impossible to obtain credit or to buy a home.

Bonkowski is the third candidate to announce a run for the seat being vacated by Shelly Aldean, who decided not to run for reelection after serving on the board of 10 years. Liz Teixeira and Maurice White have also announced their intentions to run for the seat.
