WASHINGTON, D.C. – Nevada District 2 Congressman Mark Amodei released the following statement Wednesday after the House unanimously passed H.R. 1107, the Pershing County Economic Development and Conservation Act, a bipartisan piece of legislation he reintroduced on February 16, 2017:

Carson City, Nev. – University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in partnership with the Nevada Department of Agriculture, is offering a workshop Nov. 13 to train people throughout the state how to properly use pesticides. The workshop is meant for certified applicators and those wanting to become certified, including people who regularly handle pesticides as part of their jobs, such as farmers, ranchers, park employees and groundskeepers. Attendees will receive continuing education units.

FALLON, Nev. — Holistic land management can help farmers and ranchers better manage their resources to reap environmental and economic benefits.

Each year horse racing, a county fair and other traditional events dating back almost 100 years bring together neighbors and visitors alike in the remote town of Ely, Nevada. Last week Congressman Amodei and Senator Heller introduced legislation to “prevent the threat of executive action designating or expanding national monuments without Congressional approval or local support.” Their legislation would add Nevada to Wyoming as the only states exempt from presidential designation of National Monuments, except as authorized by Congress.

Winter is the time for farmers and ranchers to repair, replace and update farm equipment.
To facilitate these tasks, Western Nevada College Specialty Crop Institute, in collaboration with the University of Nevada, Reno Desert Farming Initiative, will offer a Small Farm Equipment Workshop on Friday, Jan. 20.

The workshop runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Desert Farming Initiative, 920 Valley Road, in Reno. Cost is $20 for those registering by Friday Jan. 13 and $25 afterward.

Western Nevada College Specialty Crop Institute offers Organic Farming in the Sierra Workshop on Saturday, November 5, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., at Western Nevada College, 160 Campus Way in Fallon. WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Mark Amodei (NV-2) commended the House Natural Resources Committee’s unanimous passage Wednesday of his bill to allow public land to be held in trust for six different tribes throughout Nevada. H.R. 2733, the Nevada Native Nations Land Act, would greatly benefit the people of these regions by providing increased opportunities for economic development.

USDA Rural Development is holding energy workshops to help farmers and rural small business owners learn about how to use the Rural Energy for America Program grant to reduce energy costs.

Grant funding is available for up to 25 percent of the cost to purchase and build alternative energy systems (solar, wind, hydro power, etc.) or to enhance energy efficiency with new lighting, windows or more efficient HVAC systems.

The staff of Carson High School and Douglas High School have agreed to a rivalry basketball game to be played Nov. 19 at DHS. The staff basketball game is a fundraiser for the Peace Officer’s Memorial Fund.
Multiple members of each of the school’s staff will be on hand to battle it out on the basketball court and continue the rivalry, but for a good cause. Come support the Senators or the Tigers and be sure to wear your favorite school’s colors.

The earthquake activity that began in July 2014 in the Sheldon Wildlife Refuge in far northwest Nevada is continuing to shake residents. University of Nevada, Reno seismologists are monitoring the on-going activity that includes three earthquakes larger than magnitude 4.0 since mid-July, including the largest of these, a magnitude 4.6 on July 16.

I am here to say, due to the generosity of the Carson Valley Ranchers, they have collectively agreed to give the amount of water needed for the five day derby event. That my friends is what community is all about. I tip my hat to the Carson Valley Ranchers for stepping up and making a difference for the kids.

USDA Rural Development will hold a workshop June 11 in Carson City on its Value Added Producer Grant designed to help Nevada farmers, ranchers and food entrepreneurs learn about the program and whether they wish to apply for grants funds. Nationwide more than $30 million is available to fund the grants.

USDA Rural Development Nevada is reminding rural nonprofits, public bodies and Tribes that the deadline to apply for USDA's new Rural Business Development Grant is May 15.

A competitive, $4.5 million grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture will integrate research and Extension to help Great Basin and Southwestern tribal communities develop plans, policies and practices for sustainable agriculture and water management.
