The American Civil War veterans were laid to rest here more than a century ago back when the property was site of the Ormsby County Poor Farm.

The retention pond monsters and cousins of the legendary Tahoe Tessie were spotted Wednesday by Carson City Symphony Conductor David Bugli floating along in the slowly evaporating pond at Roop and Little.

Water and closed-toed shoes required. Hats and sunscreen recommended.
Easy Walk Program: Walks of 1 to 2 miles in length with none or negligible elevation gain, and frequently paved or smooth paths. The walks will usually be of approximately one hour in duration. If it rains or snows, meet at the Multi-Purpose Athletic Center (MAC) at 1860 Russell Way.

Forest Service announces spring 2017 Lake Tahoe recreation area opening dates

Sandoval tours south Dayton retention pond following National Weather Service alert

Sandoval was joined by Lyon County Manager Jeff Page, Lyon County Commissioner Ken Gray, and State Water Engineer Jason King.

Water is still flowing in the drainages but no property or structures are threatened at this time. No evacuations were ordered and there are no reported injuries or fatalities.

What Works: Stagnation is putting your life and business in danger

If water sits stagnant for a while, pets can get sick if they drink from it. Stagnant water is a source of malaria and dengue. It’s serious stuff. Let it sit a long time and it smells like serious stuff, too. This is what happens in our lives if we don’t grow.

Mac the Naw's Sierra and Tahoe fishing report: Father's Day in the forecast for area lakes
Submitted by editor on Thu, 06/16/2016 - 12:34pmHello fellow anglers. We have had two successful kids fishing derbys in our area. The Lampe Park Kids Derby had 1,300 children attend this year and last Saturday was the Alpine County Kids Fishing derby at Indian Creek.
My hat is off to all the volunteers that came together to make this such a successful and fun event. Now it is time for the kids to take dad fishing. Father's Day is this Sunday and what better way to give back than to take your dad fishing. These events are the reason that most kids get hooked on fishing.
Carson City Easy Hike to Ash Canyon Creek Trail
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Fri, 06/10/2016 - 9:00amMeet on Ash Canyon Road where the bumpy road starts up to the water tanks. We will carpool/caravan to the parking area at the pond.
Always bring water, a hat and use sunscreen. Bring a friend or friendly dogs, both of whom also need water! Recommend buying some hiking poles or any type of adjustable poles for use on the uphill trails.
These hikes will be 2-4 miles in distance with flat and/or uphill hiking on sandy or dirt paths. We measure by time hiked rather than distance so that we are hiking about 90 minutes round-trip.
Bear activity seen in south Carson City near Fuji Park
Submitted by editor on Mon, 05/16/2016 - 10:25amCarson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department would like to advise all visitors of a reported sighting of a sow bear with cubs. Carson City staff spotted the bears in the Clear Creek area across from Vista Grande Boulevard west of Fuji Park. We would like to warn park visitors that bears might be attracted to the park because of food and trash.
