Venturing on Sierra ice to fish or skate
Submitted by editor on Fri, 01/09/2015 - 10:44amAccording to Webster’s Dictionary, “Ice is water frozen solid by cold.” Well, with the arrival of winter weather in this area, we certainly have plenty of water frozen on our creeks, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs.
A word of warning, however: None of the ice in Western Nevada is considered safe at any time in winter. If you want to ice fish, you're going to have to head into the Sierra or areas of Eastern Nevada where some lakes freeze over and are thick enough to hold people.

Washoe Lake Night Ride
Submitted by BikeCarson.com on Thu, 11/13/2014 - 12:01pmA few years of below average snowfall has rendered Washoe Lake a small pond. It doesn’t happen very often, but occasionally Washoe Lake will disappear completely in such conditions. After a recent hike out onto the dry lake bed to investigate the conditions, I realized what a fun ride it’d be to explore the area on fat bikes while we had the chance. It also happened that our first window to do the ride came about during the evening after the sun went down.
Outdoors with Don Q: Just a few days left to fish many California waters
Submitted by editor on Fri, 10/31/2014 - 3:44amThis is my annual reminder that many California waters will close to fishing on Saturday, November 15.
So if you want to fish any of them, you better hustle because you are rapidly running out of time.
Those waters will not re-open until the last Saturday in April next year (April 25, 2015), and that is a long, long time to wait to wet your line.
Here is a partial list of some of the nearby waters that will be closing:

Outdoors with Don Q: Make plans this fall to visit Apple Hill
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 10/16/2014 - 12:03pmA party of eight friends just returned from a fun-filled day at Apple Hill, California. Those ladies were: Mary Bottoms, Laurie Harig, Patti Isaman, Mary Morris, Elaine Quilici and Kathi Quilici, all of Carson City, plus Emily Bradburn and Carolyn Harton of Dayton. For three of them, it was their first tour-bus visit to Apple Hill.
And if you are a newcomer to our area or if you have never been there, fall is a great time of the year to visit Apple Hill like they did.
If you are a newcomer, about now you are probably wondering, “What and where in the heck is Apple Hill?”
