Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey hosts it’s monthly meeting virtually via Zoom this Thursday October 8 from 9am-11am. Speakers will address three topics during this month’s meeting.

The Mile High Jazz Band Association recently produced a video, "Virtual Jazz & Poetry: Running Out." The video contains six short acts, each consisting of the reading of a poem and the performance of a related piece of music.

Editor’s Note: Bryant is a freshman Honors student at CHS, and the following is her response to the poem "A Builder or a Wrecker" by Charles Franklin Benvegar.

During this pandemic, I would love to think I am in fact a builder because I strive to see the best in this, because I have been helping those struggling immensely during these hard times, and because I am doing my best to help the medical professionals I know.

The Carson City Library is continuing to offer a busy spring with a selection of online events taking place in April in honor of National Poetry Month, Earth Day’s 50th anniversary, STEAM and more.

Heading into Tuesday, sunny skies and more springlike weather are ahead before active weather patterns start up again later in the week. Activities lined up around the capital city include morning and evening walks hosted by Muscle Powered. You can join true crime, paranormal writer Janice Oberding at Nevada State Library and Archives for a brown bag luncheon. There's a meeting of the Carson Fly Fishing Club at the sheriff's office, a paint and sip night at Living the Good Life and you can join Mile High Jazz Band at Comma Coffee for a 'Fate & Fortune' evening of music and poetry. The Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist Jakki Ford will be joined by several poets and readers on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., for an evening of big-band music and poetry on the theme "Fate & Fortune."

Each year, National Read Across America Day is observed on March 2, the birthday of children’s book author Ted Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss. In celebration, many schools often dedicate an entire week as “Reading Week.” In Carson City, grade-schoolers at Fremont Elementary School got to celebrate a week prior to the observance with several community partners and local dignitaries, who visited classrooms to read to students.

During the annual “State of the City” address Friday at Gold Dust West, Carson City’s Mayor Bob Crowell gave his last speech of its kind, as he is retiring at the end of this year.

The State of the City address is a way community members can be kept up to date on everything going on in our capital city, including achievements, challenges, and everything in between.

Updates included achievements such as the completion of the water pipeline from Douglas County to Carson City, the Complete Streets Project, Tesla’s grant for the Carson City School District, the first new park opening in 12 years, the opening of the Disc Golf course, and more.


How many students ever apply to participate in a contest, let alone actually do it and win 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or even 5th place? For that matter, how many adults say they are going to write a book one day, paint like Michelangelo, or seek discomfort, my own personal new year’s resolution, by learning something new, performing selfless endeavors, or fulfilling an item on their bucket list?

Music, I have to believe, is the best medicine on the shelf. It cuts down on our doctor bills and keeps us from sourin'. So I went to the Jubilate Holiday Concert in Truckee to cheer myself up and put a spring back in my step. It turned out to be the best decision I could have made.

CARSON CITY — If Homer wrote the Odyssey today, he might very well title it, The Love Story. The ancient Greek epic poem that chronicles Odysseus’ ten-year journey back from the Trojan War to the Island of Ithaca and his beloved wife and son is, among other things, a love story. And in many ways literally and figuratively parallels the odyssey Taylor Love has been on the past few years.

Consort Canzona, a select group of instrumentalists and singers specializing in early music, will present “Something Old, Something New” concerts this holiday season on Friday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 7, at 4 p.m., at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church, 3680 Highway 395 (just south of Best Buy) in Carson City. Admission is free, donations welcome.

The Fall visiting artist with the Resident Artist Program in Silver City is Allison Rasmussen of Carson City.

Valedictorian of the 2018 graduating class at Argent Preparatory Academy, Rasmussen studied art at Western Nevada College through their early college entry program and completed her Associate of Arts degree at 18.

Carson City is a very special place and, as the city continues to grow and prosper, many are looking to relocate here for a myriad of reasons.

Through the years, Carson City has changed. There have been good times and there have been times that, as Thomas Paine wrote, “have tried men’s souls.” We’ve lost some historic and iconic structures but have bounced back in the good times. The biggest recent changes occurred in 2016 with the reimagining of the downtown core that continues today.

The Nevada State Library will feature author, professor and poet Lindsay Wilson at its Sept. 10 “Nevada in Small Bites” book talk series.

Nevada Humanities has announced the winners of the statewide Letters About Literature program. 243 students from Nevada submitted entries to the national competition at the Library of Congress, and nine Nevada students placed in the top three of their respective judging categories and will be honored in a ceremony in Las Vegas on Tuesday, May 7, 2019. The first place winners in each category will represent Nevada at the national competition in Washington, D.C.

Celtic mandolin master MARLA FIBISH,and guitarist, BRUCE VICTOR, join forces with Marin County's Irish fiddle virtuoso SUZUKI CADY. With elegant performances of intimate songs and intricate Celtic tunes, NOCTAMBULE remains a Brewery Arts Center favorite since the beginning of the Celtic Music Series.

CARSON CITY — Vanessa Aponte, a senior at Legacy High School in Las Vegas, is the 2019 Nevada State champion of Poetry Out Loud. The statewide competition for high school students started in the fall with more than 3,500 participants and narrowed to nine regional finalists for Saturday’s championships at the studios of KNPB Channel 5 Public Broadcasting in Reno.

Enjoy the sunny skies while you can as a quick-moving weather system will blow in this afternoon into the evening bringing a chance for gusty winds and scattered rain and light snow showers. From Wednesday onward it looks like plenty of sunshine filled days extending into the weekend.

Each poem will be followed by a related big-band tune. The event will be at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, across the street from the state legislature building in Carson City. It runs from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Admission is $5 at the door and free for age 18 and under.

Northern Nevada lecturer Mike Thomas will kick off the new year with free talks on Friday, Jan. 11 and Saturday, Jan. 12 at Jack C. Davis Observatory on the Western Nevada College campus in Carson City.

Carson City School District has got to be one of the best places on earth to work, this coming from someone who has been here for 18 years. Some may call this hyperbole, but if someone actually took the time to do the research, he would find hyperbole is not the case as further evidence of this may be seen in the following letter written to all teachers within the school district by a friendly, kind, and professional Superintendent, Richard Stokes.

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, the Nevada State Museum in Carson City will be hosting a special event: “Armistice: Commemorating the End of the Great War" on Saturday, Nov. 10.

Reno resident Russell Lehmann, speaker, author, poet and advocate for autism, spoke at the Association for People Supporting Employment First’s 2018 national conference in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, June 26-28. This is one of 30 nationwide engagements Lehmann has booked this year.

The Nevada State Museum will be abuzz with activity on Friday, May 25 with behind-the-scenes tours, demonstrations of the historic Carson City Mint coin press, and a collaborative event with the American Legion.
