Friday, August 5: Things to do in Carson City
Submitted by Danielle Cook on Fri, 08/05/2016 - 5:32amFifteen days of non-stop music begins tonight at the Bliss Mansion with the Jazz and Beyond Garden Party; don’t miss out on the fabulous art show, tours of the historic home, and great jams. Downtown will be rocking tonight as the Carson High Class of 86 celebrates their reunion in Telegraph Square with two live bands. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun. Just down the street, Living the Good Life welcomes Southbound Train followed by DJ Bobby G. Fuji Park is the place to be for cowboys, broncs, and a great concert celebrating Carson City.

Hot August Nights is heating up and will be stopping at Minden Park for their Poker Run lunch. Sing your heart out during karaoke at Living the Good Life or Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar. Join Muscle Powered on an early morning hike to Secret Harbor or a late afternoon bike ride.

Westside Pour House hosts the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz each week; it’s a great excuse to grab some friends and fight for bragging rights. The launch party of ‘The Studio’ at the Adams Hub on Proctor Street invites you tour the building, learn about the incubator’s resources, meet some of Carson’s movers and shakers, and enjoy some treats.

The Resident Artist Program in Silver City Welcomes Frances Melhop

She'll set up a temporary studio at the Silver City School House during August 2016, photographing some of the Comstock’s longtime residents for a 2017 exhibition at the Haldan Art Gallery at Tahoe.

A walk with Parks and Rec, a movie viewing with the Classic Cinema Club, and life-sized board games at the Library are all on the docket for today. The big story, of course, is National Night Out with the Carson City Sheriff's Department. Free food, activities, fun, and even an aircraft or two descend on Mills Park for the annual party.

Many people are surprised to learn that Jack Dempsey once called Nevada home. Dempsey left footprints all over the Silver State that affected the entire sporting arena.

Additionally, it’s probably the reason that Northern Nevada is a mecca for classic cars and the shows that celebrate them. The Silver Dollar Classic Car Show has long been Carson’s kick off to the hot, melty August nights that follow – the Max Casino is where it all begins. Head to Red’s Old 395 for an appreciation party to those who fight our wild fires and say a hello to Smokey the Bear. Trey Stone makes an appearance at Living the Good Life and Whiskey Tavern welcomes you to their karaoke stage.

See what the talented kids of Strings in the Schools have been up to this summer at their free concert inside the Carson Mall. ‘Always Lost: A Meditation on War’ is an art exhibit from Western Nevada College that has travelled the country.

Casino Fandango is airing the 1968 classic, Planet of the Apes, today at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Kick off a weekend full of classic cars with Cruise Night at the Carson Mall with food trucks, kids activities, and more. Westside Pour House is the new home of the weekly ‘Geeks Who Drink’ Pub Quiz, so gather your smartest friends for a fun night of trivia, libations, and good food.

This week will also see receptions for two of those exhibits. The Nevada Arts Council welcomes Dave Rowe on Tuesday.

I would be hard pressed to choose between the Nevada Day Parade and the annual Taste of Downtown. Luckily, I can adore them both, and for much the same reason. They are a celebration of community, of Carson City, of our historic downtown and all that it has to offer. In addition to 'The Taste', the Brewery Arts Center goes country with the Southern Drawl Band on its outdoor stage, and Madam Curry leads another downtown Ghost Walk. A jazz jam with Tom Stryker at Living the Good Life is a great way to soothe the soul.

Today's Easy Walk with the Parks and Recreation Department takes you along the Moffat Open Space on the east side of town. The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada offers 'Books and Brags', essentially a story with craft time. Have a hot time with the fire-dancers of Controlled Burn: they meet at A to Zen on Tuesdays and welcome newcomers.

Western Nevada College Professor Marilee Swirczek, driving force behind ‘Always Lost’ war exhibit, dies
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 07/18/2016 - 12:11pmMarilee Swirczek, a writer, professor of English, faculty member at Western Nevada College, and a driving force behind the highly acclaimed “Always Lost: A Meditation on War” photo exhibition, died Sunday.
Swirczek was project director for the “Always Lost: A Meditation on War” exhibition that originated in her creative writing class. The exhibition received nationwide recognition, with a national tour that began in 2010 and ends this July 29, 2016. Marilee was a former Carson City Supervisor from 1987 to 1989 and wife of Ron Swirczek, a member of the Carson City School Board. She was 68.
