College Baseball: WNC’s Conor Harber drafted in 38th round by Baltimore Orioles

More than 1,100 selections went by in the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft before the Baltimore Orioles chose Western Nevada College freshman outfielder Conor Harber on Saturday.

It marked the ninth straight year that the Wildcats have had at least one player taken in the 40-round draft. The 2009 draft was the only other time that the Wildcats didn’t have multiple current or past players selected.

Harber, who could play another season at WNC, start a pro career in the minors or sign with a four-year school, was taken by the Orioles with the 1,149th pick in the 38th round.

Who will become Western Nevada College’s 28th baseball athlete to be drafted? The Wildcats figure to have several current players and a few more from the past who could be taken during the 2013 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft Thursday through Saturday.

WNC Wildcats continue success; several players off to standout NCAA baseball programs

The pipeline from Western Nevada College to NCAA Division I and other standout baseball programs around the country continues to flow with Wildcat talent.

WNC baseball coach D.J. Whittemore has announced that five players from his 2013 team made up primarily of freshmen have been inked by Division I schools, while two others have signed with NCAA Division II powerhouse Dixie State College. The five join nine players from last year’s team who signed with Division I teams and eight from the 2011 squad.

Obituary: Delpha Irene Schmitt Wilkison

A celebration of life will be in Dayton on Saturday, March 23, 2013 for Delpha Irene Schmitt Wilkison, who passed away March 15, 2013 in Carson City, Nev. She was 81.

Delpha, known as "Del" by those who loved her, was born October 7, 1931 in Stone County, Arkansas. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Houston Wilkison Jr. She leaves behind two sons, Ronald Lee Wilkison of Portland, Oregon and Charles Houston Wilkison, of Dayton, Nev., 3 brothers, 2 sisters, 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Students win big at Northern Nevada FIRST TECH Challenge Robotics Championship

The FIRST NV organization, organized the Second Annual Northern Nevada FIRST TECH Challenge was held Saturday at Carson High School in Carson City. High school teams from Nevada, California, Oregon, and Utah competed in a full day robotics competition for two seeds to the World Festival Robotics Competition to be held in April.

Carson City sheriff's deputies make drug and burglary-related arrests

Drug crimes, burglary, child neglect and a third DUI offense made up the bulk of this weekend's felony-related arrests, Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies report.

Two men were arrested Sunday and face felony charges after attempting to steal air compressors from a vacant Carson City building. Arrested were Geoffrey Earl Meudt, 39, of Gardnerville and Steven Walter Cozad, 30, of Wellington, Nev. Both are being held and face charges of being in possession of burglary tools and gross misdemeanor charges of conspiracy to commit theft.

Scott Parker is new Carson City area AAA branch manager

CARSON CITY — Scott Parker has joined the Carson City branch of AAA as the branch manager. He will oversee the 10 employees and office operations related to insurance, travel and memberships of the century-old-plus company. He started on Jan. 14.

Parker, who hails from Medford, Ore., has a long history of management in the insurance industry. This includes a 26-year stint with Farmers Insurance Group in different capacities. He last worked as a district sales manager after serving as a reserve district manager and agency owner as an independent agent.
