Building on its June “Mozart in the Mountains” Summer MusicFest kickoff series, TOCCATA-Tahoe Symphony Orchestra will continue its 21-concert Summer MusicFest with TOCCATA BOPS, featuring Best of Broadway, Opera hits, Pops and Patriotic selections. Join us at Corpus Christi Church, Wednesday, July 5 at 7:00pm in Carson City (3597 N. Sunridge Dr.).

It’s wine walk weekend, and depending on what kinds of days off you get, potentially the beginning of a four-day weekend. Embracing the area's manufacturing community, the Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] announces its exhibition, "Industrial Art: Sports Edition", at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery from June 9 – September 28, 2017. CCAI will host a reception for the show on Friday, June 9, 5-7pm including a short introduction of the exhibition participants at 5:30pm. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The reception and the exhibition are free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open to the public Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm.

Sierra Music Society is pleased to announce that the always popular “P’Opera!” is planning a fun-filled event with its “P’Opera! Burgers & Brew” on June 24th on the beautiful grounds of the Governor’s Mansion located at 606 Mountain Street in Carson City.

It’s going to be gorgeous all weekend long, and there are plenty of ways to take advantage of the sunny weather. The Annual Cops and Kids Open House at the Carson City Sheriff’s Department is a family favorite with free food, activities, and games. Treasure hunters will be kept busy with the Genoa Community Garage Sale, as well as one encompassing the Saratoga Springs area of Johnson Lane. Muscle Powered invites you to participate in their ‘Ride of Silence’ to bring awareness to the importance of sharing the road; meet at Telegraph Square at 7 p.m., and don’t forget your helmet.

Celebrate spring at Piper’s Opera House with an USO-WWII “Big Band” Glenn Miller evening starring the Retro Dolls—Andrews Sisters; the Kiddos of Storey County Schools and a special guest appearance of Josephine Baker in the personage of Ms. Jakki Ford.

This weekend is for all of the moms out there, and the dads that are also moms, and the women who hold a special place of honor in our hearts. The Virginia & Truckee Railroad begins its ninth season as a major visitor attraction and local’s favorite Memorial Day Weekend, May 27-28, with round trip steam trains plying the 16-mile route between Carson City and Virginia City.

And just like that, the mercury has slid back down the thermometer. You'll want to have a jacket handy for the RSVP Spring Celebration Carnival at Mills Park, but otherwise, most of this evening's fun takes place indoors. Only four shows remain if you'd like to see Western Nevada Musical Theater Company's production of 'Nice Work If You Can Get It.' Brewery Arts Center hosts rising comedian, K-Von, for a night of laughs. Get on the dance floor at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint. Betty Rocker and Raksha Paksha take the stage at this free show. Sierra Music Society continues its fine Artists In Concert programs with “To Opera, with Love” on Saturday, May 20th at 5 pm. The concert will be at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church located at 3680 US Highway 395 South in Carson City, NV.

“To Opera, with Love” will feature the lovely soprano Irina Kasimova and baritone/tenor Chris Nelson accompanied by Bryan Chuan. The concert lasts about an hour and is a relaxing way to enjoy beautiful music in a beautiful setting. Admission is $15 General; $12 Seniors/Students/Military; and $10 Twelve and under.

So many things deserve to be in this first sentence: do I mention the annual West Side Bike Month Cruiser Ride, make a Star Wars pun about May the Fourth, or focus on the Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony? What I love most about Carson City is our ability to be outdoorsy, patriotic, geeky, and none of the above - all at the same time. If you don’t find something you absolutely have to check out in today’s “Things to Do”, please look at my list again in a day or two, or sometime next week.

More beautiful weather is on its way. If I seem a little excited about a little bit of sunshine, its because I am, especially after this very long, gray, wet winter. Today we celebrate the Arts in Nevada at the Legislature and salute the painters, potters, makers, sculptors, singers, dancers, actors, writers, poets, and musicians that capture all that is Nevada in their work.

Hold on to your hat, the weekend is here. If it’s a cowboy hat, head over to Genoa for their annual Cowboy Festival. Plenty of free things to see, hear, and experience await. The annual Spring Earth Spirit Faire lets you celebrate Mother Earth with workshops, holistic practitioners, great vendors, and a raffle. It benefits the Heart to Heart School and Advocates to End Domestic Violence so it’s always worth checking out. ELKO, Nev. — The Nevada Division of Tourism recognized outstanding members of the state’s rural tourism industry at the VolunTourism Awards Dinner April 27 in Elko. The awards ceremony was a highlight of the state’s annual Rural Roundup conference.

Sierra Nevada Ballet will perform Brew, Brats, and Ballet this Sunday, April 30, 4 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City. Tickets can be purchased breweryarts.org.

Today has quite a bit going for it, hard to believe that it’s a Wednesday. It’s Red vs. Blue in the Morse Burley Gym at Carson High School. The traditional basketball game between Democrat and Republican legislators also raises money for local seniors.

Holy moly, it’s going to be a busy weekend: busy and gorgeous out. A bowling tournament and the Comstock Shootout Soccer tournament have the hotels and motels busting at the seams. Celebrate Earth Day with Muscle Powered by making a small piece of Carson City that much cleaner; the trash meets at 8 a.m. and leaves you plenty of time to enjoy the day. The week winds to a close, but the events are all gearing up. Today kicks off the three-day High School Rodeo at the Douglas Fairgrounds, and if all goes well, it should remain dry for our local ropers and riders. Kids will want to test their skill at the ‘Pitch, Hit, Run’ Competition at the Boys and Girls Club. Secret Agents are the topic at the monthly Mike Thompson Lecture at the Plaza Hotel if you’re looking for intrigue.

The train will depart the depot in Carson City at 10 a.m. arrive in Virginia City about 11:15 a.m. you will then be shuttled up to the opera house, lunch is from noon to 1 p.m. and the concert will start at 1:30 p.m., you will then be shuttled back to the train depot for the ride back to Carson City.

What’s this? A weekend with no snow in sight? That’s the best news I’ve heard in months. It’s a St. Patty’s celebration in Virginia City this weekend with the parade, Rocky Mountain Oyster Fest, and Ball Buster Saloon Crawl. Bragging rights are on the line at the Sixth Annual Thirsty Boy Homebrew Competition sponsored by Just Brew It. You’ll get a sneak peek at the soon-to-open Shoe Tree Brewery if you attend the award ceremony.

The Carson Valley Pops Orchestra will present an eclectic array of music and announce the 2017 Scholarship winners at their Annual Spring Concert on April 1 at 7 p.m. at the Carson Valley CIVC Hall.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for clear skies, but there are rumors of snow flurries. Luckily there are indoor and outdoor activities, no matter what blows our way. At the top of the list for today is Winter, Wine, Spirits, and All That Jazz at the Brewery Arts Center. Their annual fundraiser is not to be missed.

If everything goes as planned, the sun will finally make an appearance. That’s good news for those running in the Carson High Safe and Sober 5K or in Ascent Runs’ Love Can Be Cold 5/10K at Prison Hill.
