Don Gibson files his candidacy for Carson City Sheriff

Don Gibson filed his candidacy Friday for Carson City Sheriff. He is a lifelong resident of Carson City and has seen positive change throughout the years.

Having been in law enforcement for over 16 years Gibson said he has the demonstrative ability and necessary leadership skills to administer the office of sheriff. His team would continue Carson City’s positive change and he will "always strive to improve the quality of life for all of us."

Gibson said professionalism, compassion and sincerity are all paramount when handling community affairs.

Carson City Council, US Navy League to meet

The Carson City Council of the United States Navy League will hold its first meeting of the New Year on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 in the Banquet Room at Casino Fandango, 3800 S. Carson St., Carson City.

This is a change of location. The dinner hour will begin after 6:15 PM. Attendees will be accessing the Casino Buffett from the Banquet Room. Our speaker will be Katherine (Kat) Miller, Col. USA, ret., the Executive Director of the Nevada Office of Veterans Services. She is a 34 year veteran of the US Army and a Military Correctional Specialist.

Public invited to hear students at Poetry Out Loud State Finals in Reno March 15

The public is invited to the 2014 Nevada Poetry Out Loud Competition State Finals at the Siena Hotel Spa Casino Ballroom in Reno Saturday, March 15, from noon to 3 p.m.

Fifteen students who gained the status of district finalists after a series of local competitions will vie for awards totaling $4,000 for the first, second and third place winners and their respective schools.

Family of Carson City man killed by hit-and-run driver asks for help locating the suspect

The family of a 31-year-old Carson CIty pedestrian who was struck on Highway 50 near Stateline at Lake Tahoe in the early morning hours of Aug. 10, 2013 seeks help in locating the driver who fled the scene, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Cody J. Dobson was walking on the highway, or may have stumbled from the adjacent sidewalk, just east of the MontBleu Resort Casino and Spa at approximately 3:13 am prior to being struck by a motor vehicle, said NHP Trooper Chuck Allen.

More than 500 solar panels going up at two Carson City area schools

Black Rock Solar began construction in late February on two new Carson City area photovoltaic arrays: 324 ground-mounted panels at Sierra Lutheran High School and 193 rooftop panels at Silver State Charter Schools.

That means 135 kW of clean energy from the sun powering the 91-student Christian school and the 7th to 12th-grade charter school. It also means an annual utility-bill savings of more than $19,000 for the two schools – that’s $19,000 that can go toward expanded educational opportunities within the Carson City and Douglas County communities.

Study shows risky teen behavior in Nevada; goal to steer interventions

A survey of Nevada high school students shows gradual trending in risky behavior, the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health announced Tuesday.

Results of the 2013 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a biennial, anonymous, voluntary survey of students in grades 9 through 12 in traditional, public high schools, assess six risk areas that contribute to the leading causes of death and disease among youth.

Wellington man, Samuel H. Dupuis, killed in crash on State Route 208

An 87-year-old Wellington man, Samuel H. Dupuis, and his dog were killed in a crash Monday afternoon in Douglas County on State Route 208, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The accident was reported 12:49 p.m. NHP troopers were dispatched to a collision near Kyle Drive, four miles east of Highway 395, involving a commercial motor vehicle and a small pickup, said NHP Trooper Chuck Allen.

Carson Youth Wrestling Club Competes at National Tournament

The Carson Bulldog Wrestling Club competed in the Rocky Mountain National’s Rumble in Reno wrestling tournament this past Saturday at the Peppermill.

Carson City’s youth wrestling club had 20 wrestlers competing in both the Rookie and Experienced categories for ages 6 to 15 years old. The club finished with ten top placers, four of which were first place honors.

TRPA launches online exchange to help property owners restore sensitive land

Lake Tahoe, CA/NV - The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency has launched an online marketplace for property owners, realtors and land banks to use to increase the environmental improvements that come from transferring commonly-traded development rights in the Lake Tahoe region.

The new, online Transfer of Development Rights Exchange allows buyers and sellers to create postings, explains transfer incentives and eligibility requirements, and makes it all viewable on an interactive map. As the TDR Exchange is used more, it will also track market trends.
