Last year I wrote, “We are told to bring nature inside. Houseplant gardening is back, just like in my hippie days,” citing www.gardendesign.com 2017 trends.

I admit I haven’t been a fan of houseplants, other than cacti and succulents, for many years. I got tired of watering, trimming, fertilizing, repotting and dusting.

Catmandu is excited to announce the purchase of our facility at 1829 Brown Street in Carson City. After 4 years of providing a cage-free shelter, adoptions, spay and neuter and rescue services for northern Nevada’s cats and kittens, we are now a permanent part of Carson City and the surrounding communities.

Gardeners pay attention to weather, and hopefully are also aware of Nevada’s climate.

What’s the difference?

CARSON CITY — University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in collaboration with the Nevada Department of Agriculture, will offer a series of eight classes for those in the green industry beginning Feb. 1. The program benefits people wanting to enter the industry, beginners in the industry and established industry professionals.

With Thanksgiving just days away, the holiday season is just around the corner. The annual Holiday Craft Fair at Carson High features a plethora of handmade and locally crafted gifts for the loved ones on your shopping list. Take the plunge at the Carson Aquatic Center if you want to get a picture with Scuba Santa. Grab a coat, some friends, and your ID and head downtown for this month’s beer crawl. $15 gets you a glass and your first beer, from there you’ll pay only $1 for refills at several watering holes. I'm a fan of the Oregon State Extension Service. They have wonderful horticulturists there. I just came across an article by Kym Pokorny titled “What Does That Mean? Experts Take on Gardening Jargon.” Since everyone likes to test their knowledge, see how many of the following gardening words you know:

Dayton, Nevada – Beginning Oct. 1 through the annual seasonal close of Community Roots in late Fall, customers will receive 30 percent off of their entire purchase. On Wednesday, Sept. 20, author Bonnie Boice Nishikawa will share her ‘life experiences’ related to growing up in the Nevada State Children’s Home. Located in Carson City, the facility provided a ‘home’ to hundreds of children, including Ms. Nishikawa and her brother and sister, between 1870 and 1992.

Our property is 2.5 acres in size. That’s bigger than many people have and huge for folks living in apartments or condominiums. And, some people don’t have any yards at all.

Young people ages 10 through 14 have the opportunity to attend a four-day Kids Camp, July 10-13, 1 to 4:30 p.m., at Healthy Communities Coalition, formerly River’s Edge Nursery on Dayton Valley Road.

Hello fellow anglers, Wishing you a warm and a happy holiday fishing season. Although many areas in our local area have closed for the season, we still have plenty of options to keep on fishing. The Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties anticipates filing a loan application with the USDA-Rural Development Community Facilities Programs for the purpose of financing a property purchase located at 209 Dayton Valley Road, Dayton Nevada to meet the present and future needs of the non-profit food bank and garden nursery demands of the Lyon and Storey County service areas in the Dayton region.

As the weather moves from a beautiful spring to a hot summer, staying at home is simply out of the question, especially with two free performances of music and drama aimed at the community of Carson City. The Carson High School Orchestra and Concert Band will deliver “A Night with the Classics” at their annual spring concert on May 18, and CHS Theatre Arts presents The Taming of the Shrew (in the old west) on May 26.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, Pinhole Properties, with artwork by artist Nancy Raven at the city’s Community Development Building [formerly the BRIC] located at 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. The building is open to the public daily, 8am – noon, 1-4pm. The free exhibition will remain in the building’s lobby through July 6, 2016.

Can we compost in winter? Winter composting may simply involve tossing ingredients on the pile and waiting for temperatures to warm up in spring to complete the decomposition process.

On the other hand, if you maintain a warm temperature in the interior of the pile, you can keep the decomposing microbes happy and somewhat active. With a warm center, the cold exterior temperature of the pile won’t harm them.

Early Nevada miners historically used charcoal as a fuel source to smelt less valuable ore to extract silver and gold. Located near mining districts throughout the state, charcoal ovens were utilized to optimize the charcoal conversion process.
