Many of the tips provided involve common sense and can be practiced year round.

We are a very generous community and can fall victim to several scams that are ongoing, not just in Carson City but across the nation.

A Letter to Derek Jeter

Dear Mr. Jeter,

Where do I start? First of all, that was a great run huh? Twenty years is an amazing accomplishment and to do it the way you did was something that I will probably never see again. I never thought as a little kid in 1996 when you took over the starting position at shortstop for the New York Yankees that I would be looking up to you and calling you one of my idols.

Outdoors with Don Q: Late winter offers lots of opportunities for staying busy

If you're not into traditional winter sports such as ice fishing, ice skating, downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, snowshoeing or snowmobiling, there is not a lot to do in late winter...for most people.

Some choose to stare out the window, complain about the snow, ice, frost and darkness of wintertime and stay glued to their TV sets. However, there are plenty of activities to take your mind off our cold weather, dark mornings and evenings, if you would like to do so.

Three years! Time certainly flies when you are having fun, and it has been both a totally enjoyable and memorable three years of writing about all kinds of activities in the Great Outdoors, both near and far away.

State urges Carson City, Douglas County valley residents not to burn due to poor air quality

The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection is asking people in the Eagle and Carson Valleys to refrain from burning wood this week during a period of stagnant air. Where wood is the only option, people should burn as cleanly as possible.

Strong temperature inversions and stagnant weather conditions can cause air pollution levels to increase rapidly in the valleys of Carson City and Douglas County.

Newspapers tell all during Nevada's 150-year history

Because Nevada is coming up on its sesquicentennial, I’ve spent hours in the State Library and Archives in Carson City, squinting at microfilm images of newspaper pages.

Although I’m looking for particular stories, there’s no way to avoid the weird, curious or monumental articles that catch my eye.

September 26, 2013 - 6:30pm

The Nevada State Museum hosts author Paul Franklin for September’s installment of the museum’s Frances Humphrey Lecture Series at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26. Franklin wrote “Anatomy of an Ingot,” a book that offers an investigation into the lives of three assayers responsible for a significant piece of silver in the 19th century.

The group briefly came together more than 130 years ago to form an assay and metallurgical laboratory that produced a mysterious silver ingot. Their careers intersected with early mining history in California and the Arizona and Nevada territories.

Carson City spring cleanup 2013 begins April 15

Grab a rake, a broom, a pair of work gloves and be prepared to apply some elbow grease, Carson City's annual spring cleanup week begins April 15.

Whether you're looking to haul junk from the basement to the landfill, are a senior and need help getting rid of debris, or maybe you need to get rid of old cans of paint, Carson City has several programs available.

Here's a list provided by the city of what's available:

The capitol dome is silver, not red

Considering how many years I spent building and managing the websites of the Nevada Appeal and its sister publications, I was interested to see them roll out a completely new web platform and design last week.

The look is very clean, though almost in a retro-1999 way, and they do work better on mobile devices. But they removed so much navigation that it makes it hard to find what you are looking for, and the keyword search is deathly slow, when it works at all.

Back To My Original Approach

Bibliography: Lives of early Nevada Comstock writers archived by the volumes

This is the last installment of “The Sagebrushers.” This series was written to profile the lives and careers and credit some of Nevada’s early newspapermen. The men named in this story were some of the more prominent Sagebrushers. There were many others, but space here did not allow us to name those who also deserved recognition.

Outdoors with Don Q: A two-year anniversary at Carson Now

Today, Feb. 9, marks a special day in the life of yours truly. It is my two-year anniversary writing about the Great Outdoors at Internet websites Carson Now and South Tahoe Now.

Time certainly flies when you are having fun, and it has been both a totally enjoyable and a totally memorable two years of writing about all kinds of activities in the Great Outdoors, both near and far away.

The Sagebrushers: Comstock-era writers took their booze and news to the limit

Alfred Doten had one of the longest tenures of any Sagebrusher in the history of the Comstock. His Nevada career began at Como in 1863, and ended 40 years later with his death in Carson City in 1903.  Today Doten is remembered for the journals he wrote spanning 54 years documenting his career and personal experiences. Seventy years after his death, the University of Nevada Press published a massive three volume set, weighing a hefty 14 1/2 pounds, titled: “The Journals of Alfred Doten 1849-1903.”

Nevada's early 'Sagebrushers' brought literary journalism to the American West

Sagebrush journalism was a style of literature born in the American West that had some very deep roots in Virginia City. It came to life around 1860 and had run its course by the turn of the 20th century. In that ensuing 40 year time period some Sagebrushers became world renown.

Graham's Word: Ault Is The Best Coach For Nevada Football

Chris Ault has been a very successful coach for Nevada. Yet, every time Nevada Football has a ‘less-than-impressive’ finish to the season, some fans call for him to leave or be relieved of his position.

Let’s take a look at just exactly what Ault has done for the Nevada Football program:
He has been the Head Coach for 28 seasons. In those seasons he has compiled a 233-109-1 overall record. Ault has only had three losing seasons. Three. He has led Nevada to nine conference titles. Under his belt, Nevada has been to the postseason 17 times and that includes a current 8 year streak.

From the Publisher

Readers, Colleagues, Media Partners & Friends:

It is with deep appreciation for your help, encouragement, readership and support over the past three years that I am tasked with announcing the suspension of operations at the Nevada News Bureau.

In short, we have been unable to secure the funds we would need to continue operating in 2013. Such is life, sometimes, in the non-profit world.
