Carson City's Labor Day Weekend Events: Saturday, August 31
Happy Saturday, Carson City! We have a beautiful, hot labor day weekend ahead of us with highs of 93 and lows in the mid 50s through Monday. There are tons of great summer-time events this weekend, and enjoy them while you can because Fall is just around the corner!

Saturday, August 31
— Civil War Days and Battle Days in Virginia City (all day). The event is located at 86 C St. History comes to life each Labor Day weekend as the Great Civil War Reenactors bring epic battles to Virginia City. Hundreds of reenactors battle out great scenes on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad and even right in the middle of C Street as part of the Labor Day Parade. Dress in your finest Victorian garb and join the ladies for High Tea, or take a ride on an evening champagne train and see a battle from your seat.
— Muscle Powered to host hike to Marlette Lake. 7:30 a.m. Meet at the Highway 50 Park-n-Ride so we can carpool to the Spooner Lake State Park. Join Muscle Powered on the last Saturday in August for a beautiful hike to Marlette Lake. The hike begins from the Spooner Lake parking lot, travels north on North Canyon Road, and continues onto the single-track trail north to Marlette Lake. Muscle Powered is a Carson City non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. We will pass through a mixed forest that includes pine and aspen as well as chinkapin oak, sage, currents, and other shrubs. We will experience a wonderful scenic view of Marlette Lake, where we will take a lunch break, and then hike back.
— Silver City Labor Day weekend rummage sale. 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Silver City Park at the Silver City Schoolhouse Community Center, 385 High St. in Silver City. Silver City Labor Day Weekend Rummage Sale! On Saturday, August 31 from 8 am to 3 pm in the Silver City Park there will be a town rummage sale to raise funds for the Comstock Residents Association. The sale will take place in the Silver City Park at the Silver City Schoolhouse Community Center at 385 High Street in Silver City. Lots of amazing treasures, antiques, useful items, fine art, musical instruments, household items, camping gear and more!
— Fresh and Bountiful: Carson City Farmers Market returns. 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Curry St. in Carson City. Enjoy fresh-picked produce, local meats, fresh flowers, artisan baked goods, jams, honey, crafts, live music and Carson City’s smiling faces.This week at the market you can enjoy music by Ricky D., stop by the kids' booth to make your own market bag, we have all the supplies for you. We are excited to see you all again this year.
— Mining artifact and antique show in Virginia City. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bonanza Saloon, 27 C St. 2019 Mining Artifact & Antique Show is coming to the Comstock. Come explore and enjoy the mining history through hands-on collectibles. The largest selection of mining antiques will be on display at the Bonanza Saloon August 31, 2019. Get a sneak peek and pre-show sale Friday, August 30 at the Chollar Mine.
— Carson City Women of the Moose Labor Day Weekend Poker Run. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Carson City Moose Lodge, 1475 Old Hot Springs Rd. Start your weekend off with a fun Poker Run. This Poker Run is open to the public. All motorcycles and cars are welcome. Run date is Saturday, Aug. 31, 2019 and open to age 21 and over. The first stop in Virginia City will be open at 11 a.m. with the other stops being local in Carson City. Stops and maps available when you register at the Carson Moose Lodge in Carson City the day of the event from 9:00 am to 11:00am. The run is 11-3 p.m. with awards, raffle 50/50 and Taco bar at 4 p.m. Back at the Moose Lodge.
— Carson City Toyota to host free family day at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada. Doors open at 10 a.m. The public is invited to join staff for a free family day at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada on Saturday, August 31. The doors open at 10 a.m. so grab the kids and have a fun day with the family, compliments of Carson City Toyota. The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada is a long-standing, festive museum offering a variety of interactive exhibits for kids and special events. It is located at 813 N Carson St, Carson City.
— Train to Virginia City from Carson City. Event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 4650 Eastgate Siding Road. Prices for the ride range from $25-$55. Rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mill on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route as you meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. This relaxing all-day train excursion is fully narrated with historical facts and anecdotes. Departing from Carson City’s Eastgate Depot, the 24-mile round-trip tour includes a fun 3.5-hour stopover in historic Virginia City, where you can stroll the boardwalks and explore restaurants, shops, saloons, museums, mines and more. Please arrive at the depot 1/2 hour prior to departure. Tickets are available online or by calling 877-724-5007 or 775-291-0208.
— Vintage steam train in Virginia City. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Virginia and Truckee Depot, 166 F Street. Rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mills on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route as you meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. This relaxing, all-day train excursion is fully narrated with historical facts and anecdotes. Departing from Carson City’s Eastgate Depot, the 24-mile round-trip tour includes a fun 3.5-hour stopover in historic Virginia City, where you can stroll the boardwalks and explore restaurants, shops, saloons, museums, mines and more.
— Guided tours of the Nevada State Captiol. Two separate tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday in Carson City. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The Capitol remains open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of up to 20 people can be arranged in advance by calling the Nevada State Museum’s Education Program at 775-687-4810, ext. 237.
— Rock drilling contest in Virginia City. 12 to 3 p.m. at downtown C St. Watch as today’s miners compete for the title of Top Rock Driller in a contest dating back to our mining days.
— Mills Park train rides. 12 to 4 p.m. The Carson City Railroad Association (CCRA) maintains and operates Carson City’s only Narrow Gauge Railroad and Model Railroad Club. The narrow gauge railroad is approximately 1.5 miles long and runs throughout Mills Park, with a duration of about 10 minutes. The two indoor model railroads are a HO and N gauge railroad, located in the CCRA train station at the east end of the park. Train rides are $2 per passenger, and free for children under 2 years old.
— Guided walk of the historic Genoa. 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Mormon Station Park. Mormon Station is located in the heart of the Genoa National Historic District, which encompasses over 25 structures and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Join a park interpreter for a guided walk throughout a portion of the historic district. During the approximately one-mile round-trip walk, an interpreter will discuss the significance of the structures located along the route.
— Saturday beginning wheel throwing at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson St. in Carson City. The Ogres of Ogres-Holm introduce you to clay in this 6-week open start class, including open studio time, is designed to get you started. It’s a great way to relax on a Saturday afternoon. $175 for 6 weekly sessions or $45 drop ins.
— Lego Club at the Carson City Library. 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.
— Carson Mall Bingo to benefit Jimenez brothers. 5 p.m. at 1313 S. Carson Street. On Sunday, July 14 the Jimenez brothers were involved in a head-on collision with other friends. This occurred during a return trip from Las Vegas. Alberto Jimenez surfed a broken femur along with a serious facial laceration. His brother Alejandro Jimenez will need physical therapy to strengthen his body after the crash. Unfortunately, without having medical insurance the financial burden will fall on the Jimenez family. Both brothers are known for their kindness not only to their family, and friends, but to strangers as well, both with a huge heart and always being someone you can always count on. Beto is a loving father to a beautiful baby girl who is anxiously awaiting the successful recovery of her daddy. Beto works at Action Home Furniture. Carson Mall will be hosting a BINGO fundraiser on Saturday, August 31st at 5 pm. Seating opens at 4:30 p.m.
— Live music at Glen Eagles Restaurant. 6:30 to 9 p.m. at 3700 N. Carson St. Enjoy live music that is sure to make you get up and dance every Wednesday-Saturday starting at 6:30-9:00ish.
— Carson City Ghost Walk returns this Saturday. 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bob McFadden Plaza. For the 27th year, the spookiest historical tour of the capital city is returning this Saturday, June 1 with the Carson City Ghost Walk. The Carson City Ghost Walk is a seasonal historical tour of Carson City’s west side, a walking history lesson with a touch of the supernatural. Some of the stops on the tour include the Bliss Mansion, the Ferris Mansion, the Governor’s Mansion, and the Rinckel Mansion.
Sunday, September 1
— Street Vibrations Fall Rally in Virginia City (all day). The rally takes place at 86 South C Street. The Comstock starts rumbling when Virginia City hosts this raucous celebration of music, metal and motorcycles. Thousands of bikers cruise into this historic mining town for good food, live entertainment and plenty of fun. Find out more or you can register as a participant.
— Muscle Powered Sunday bicycle ride. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Fremont Elementary School. Meet at Fremont Elementary School in the South parking lot next to the Linear Ditch Trail. Typically, this ride consists of two 10-15 minute loops with varying pace depending on rider level. This is a “no drop” ride so no one will be left behind. All riders must have a bicycle in safe working condition, a helmet, and closed toed shoes. — Carson Nugget to host Rolling Stones tribute band. 7:30 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom inside the Carson Nugget, 507 N. Carson St. The Carson Nugget in Carson City will present Rudy Columbini and The Unauthorized Rolling Stones, a tribute to the Rolling Stones over the Labor Day weekend.
Monday, September 2

— Keep Tahoe Blue Labor Day trash cleanup. 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Kings Beach in North Lake Tahoe. The beaches can get thrashed with trash after the popular holiday weekend festivities. Help us keep our beaches clean! We provide cleanup materials, refreshments and a prize. Ride your bike to receive a special gift. Bring your reusable water bottle and friends!
— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Graphically Defined. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at BRIC, 108 E. Proctor St. Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) is delighted to present Graphically Defined, a group exhibition of work by seventeen Western Nevada College students. This exhibit includes a wide variety of art including ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting and photography that shows the diversity of the students’ creativity. The Business Resource Innovation Center (BRIC) is open Monday-Friday 8:00-12:00 p.m. and 1:00-4:00 p.m.
— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: New Crop 2019. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Carson City Courthouse Gallery, 885 E. Musser St. The Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) presents its exhibition, New Crop 2019, by artists Mark Combs and Frances Melhop. An opening reception will be held on June 7 from 5:00-7:00 p.m.; the artists will give a brief talk about their work at 5:30 p.m. Visit the CCAI Website for more information.
— Open studio basic painting at the Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 449 W. King Street. Students will work on their own paintings from subject matter they have chosen. The instructor, Mark Tompkins, will work one-on-one with each student to help them complete their project from start to finish. Each student must supply their own materials. Students may choose to paint in either water colors, oils, or acrylic paints.
— Labor Day Parade in Virginia City. 12 to 1 p.m. in downtown C Street. Celebrate the American labor movement and all the achievements of workers in our country up on the Comstock. Virginia City is proud to honor and celebrate the men and women who have made our country what it is today.
— Monday night throwing class at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson Street. Drop in sessions are $45 or $175 for a 6 week, open start class, including open studio anytime during the 6 weeks. — West Coast Swing Dance. 5:30 to 10 p.m. at the Carson Lanes Family Fun Center, 4600 Snyder Ave. Join the High Sierra Swing Club every Monday for a night filled with West Coast Swing dancing! Beginners class at 5:30 followed by an Intermediate class at 6:30, $8 each. Free social dance following lessons from 7:30 to 10 p.m.
