Carson City area students honored as Future Educators at Nevada Governor’s Mansion
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 05/20/2019 - 8:34amCARSON CITY — Thirty-four juniors and seniors from Carson High School were honored at Nevada Governor’s Mansion last Tuesday evening for their efforts in a university level introductory education course. In partnership with the College of Education at the University of Nevada - Reno, CHS offers the EDU 110 course for students interested in pursuing a teaching career.
Carson City CASA to host volunteer information hour this Thursday and again May 16

Come get your questions answered first and then hang out afterward as new volunteer training will begin. See first hand how the organization works. Both meetings begin at 5 p.m.

Even more amazing than the dances are the students behind the scenes who, with the guidance of Leadership Adviser Ann Britt and FBLA Adviser Angila Golik, transformed the CHS Big Gym so that all visitors, young and old alike, would think they had walked into a beautiful dream.

Young Women pursuing STEM Fields to be honored by Society of Women Engineers in Reno banquet

High school teachers from around the region are invited to nominate female students in their classes to receive this award of merit. Those students who are nominated are then invited to attend the banquet –along with their friends, families, supporters and teachers – to receive a certificate and accolades on stage and with fanfare.
Carson City HOSA students compete in state competition, take home 6 chapter awards
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 03/27/2019 - 8:52amCARSON CITY — A total of 93 Career and Technical Education (CTE) and HOSA (Future Health Professionals) students competed in the Nevada State Leadership Conference held at the Rio in Las Vegas March 18-20.
There were a total of 74 students from Carson High School (CHS), 6 from Pioneer High School (PHS) and 13 from Carson Middle School (CMS). More than 1,000 students from across the state of Nevada competed in more than 40 medical competition events.

Capital City Farm Days in Carson City to teach youth about Nevada agriculture
Submitted by Brett Fisher on Sat, 03/16/2019 - 7:55pmUniversity of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s 4-H presents Capital City Farm Days, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., April 11-12 at the Carson City Fairgrounds and Fuji Park Exhibit Hall, 601 Clear Creek Road in Carson City.
There will be about 30 presenters teaching elementary-age youth about Nevada agriculture, where food and fiber come from, and environmental issues related to agriculture.

State K-12 Spending Up, Results Not Improved (Opinion)

The first two columns showed that since FY06 state spending has grown faster than Nevada’s economy, thus imposing an ever-larger real burden on Nevada families and businesses, whose real incomes are lower now than in FY06. The third one noted Health and Social Services spending, the largest budget item, has grown most rapidly by far, driven greatly by federal health care mandates and funding.
Three more Carson City teachers earn National Board Certification

The NBPTS is widely considered to be the highest professional recognition for educators and includes a 5 percent pay increase in acknowledgement of accomplished teaching.

The grant money provides out-of-school-time supports for at-risk students. At risk, a broad term in this grant, includes students who are at risk of not passing a class, at risk of becoming truant, or just in need of a safe-place after school.

Question removed from 8th grade math assessment sees increase in Nevada's scores
Submitted by Kelsey Penrose on Mon, 12/17/2018 - 12:18pmCARSON CITY, Nev. – A routine review process by the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium identified a question where student performance didn’t appear in line with expectation. A deeper analysis by the Smarter Balanced staff resulted in the removal of the question from 8th grade math. The result is all students that answered the question saw their performance increase. Moreover there was no material change to any school ratings.

Nevada students improve Advanced Placement exam proficiency

“Research shows that students who pass the AP Exam with a 3 or higher not only demonstrate that they are ready for freshman college classes, but that they are also more likely to graduate college in four years,” said Steve Canavero, Ph.D., Superintendent of Public Instruction.
