Senator Square: Carson High School homecoming is here

The excitement at Carson High School right now is off the chart as every student prepares for Homecoming and all the fun and festivities that come along with its arrival. Beginning at 1 p.m., every student in the school hustled to the CHS big gym to prepare for and celebrate everything from the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes to the upcoming crowning of the 2016 Homecoming Queen and King.

Since 2011, the Carson City School District has seen a long list of accomplishments including free full-day kindergarten at all schools, a mobile device for every student in grades three through 12, a school-based health center and increased accessibility to courses in science, technology, engineering arts and math.

Fifteen incarcerated inmates, some being U.S. military veterans held at the Warm Springs Corrections Center in Carson City will be taking Western Nevada College classes with scholarships generated through an inmate barbecue fundraiser held earlier this year.

The Purple Avocado in Carson City celebrates 15 years of ‘magic’

With her son graduating from high school, Sue Jones began to rethink her own career as a math teacher at Carson High School. More and more, she was drawn back to retail, where she had gotten her start at the Ace Hardware her father owned in Incline Village.

Then it came to her — in a dream — the store that would help people connect with one another through meaningful gifts.

“I really just woke up with this idea of having a very heartfelt store,” she said.

Nevada completes first online exams and assessments

CARSON CITY, Nev. – This week marked the end of Nevada’s online assessment window. More than 270,000 students successfully completed the Smarter Balanced and Science Grade 5 and 8 online assessments this year.

Carson City candidates talk turkey at Tuesday night forum

Candidates for Carson City Mayor and State Assembly District 40 addressed a nearly full house of voters at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall Wednesday night during a candidate forum sponsored by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce.

The candidates participated in a structured debate moderated by Nevada Appeal Editor Adam Trumble.

As a group, they were asked questions on specific topics and each given two minutes to provide a response.

Scouts celebrate science and technology, engineering and math at recent event

With a theme of STEM — Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics— Nevada Area Council held its annual Scout Show at the South Reno Home Depot on Saturday, May 7.

Hundreds of Cub Scouts and Webelos from around the region, including those from Carson City, Douglas and Lyon counties, along with their parents and siblings, flocked to the wide variety of booths set up to provide a day of fun events with the STEM theme.

Capital City Farm Days this Thursday and Friday at Fuji Park

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s 4-H presents Capital City Farm Days this Thursday and Friday at Fuji Park in Carson City,

Thirty presenters, including representatives from the Nevada Department of Agriculture, the Bureau of Land Management, the Nevada State Museum, and other local and state agriculture and natural resources organizations, will teach preschool and elementary-age youth about Nevada agriculture, where food and fiber come from, and environmental issues related to agriculture.

Senator Square: Scott Vickrey named Carson High School's Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to Scott Vickrey, the 2016 CHS Teacher of the Year, and Tami Burgoon, the CHS Classified Employee of the Year for 2016. Becoming Teacher of the Year is no easy task at Carson High School. With 104 teachers, not including other staff members, the CHS Teacher of the Year Award is an accomplishment most teachers will never receive, so winning an award like this required a great many people to say a great thing or two about Scott Vickrey.

Carson High HOSA brings home awards, scholarships from state competition

Carson High School’s HOSA — Future Health Professionals, one of four Career Technical Student Organizations that are part of the CHS Career and Technical Education program, sent more than 100 students to compete in the state HOSA Future Health Professionals Leadership Conference in Las Vegas this month thanks to a $4,400 grant from Partnership Carson City and fundraising efforts by students.

Meditation Rooms opened at UNR

“Meditation and Reflection Rooms” formally opened on March 16 at University of Nevada, Reno claimed to be one of the “nation's top public research universities”.

These “Meditation and Reflection Rooms” feature two individual rooms and a larger space for reflection, meditation and prayer. It includes various cabinets where each group can keep their required religious icons and articles locked to be brought out when needed by individuals.

Technology on display at annual science night

Anthony Aguilar and Jack Wilson, both 13-year-old eighth-graders at Eagle Valley Middle School gave a demonstration on how to work a robotic arm at the annual Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math Night.

“You can move it up or down or also turn the rotation of the claw,” explained Anthony. He showed how to pick up different items with it.

Area students combine high school, college and internships to meet skilled worker demand

William Dakota Gershel and Timothy Ibarra, both seniors at Carson High School, have participated in Career and Technical Education programs since attending CHS as freshman. Ibarra participated in two years of auto technician courses and two years in auto body courses. Gershel experimented in a variety of CTE courses including culinary, web design and welding.

Churchill County 4-H youth to attend Leadership Washington Focus conference

Churchill County Cooperative Extension’s 4-H Youth and Families with Promise Program recently received a grant to send three students and one adult to the Leadership Washington Focus conference, a national conference in Washington D.C. that develops leadership skills.

Carson City students show KNPB they are ready to learn

Kindergarten students at Empire Elementary School were treated Thursday by a visit from educators with KNPB Channel 5 in Reno. The visit was part of KNPB’s Ready To Learn workshops, which bring special learning topics into classrooms around the Reno-Sparks and Carson City areas.

Thursday's guest educators taught students about the forces of motion, KNPB Ready To Learn Facilitator Joy Foremaster said.

Sierra Lutheran Teacher Named Carson City Rotary Teacher of the Month

A donation by the Rotary Club of Carson City will help ease the financial burden for some high school students enrolled in Western Nevada College’s Jump Start College program next fall.

Carson City Library hosts adventuring game workshop

Halen Harrison, 10, spent a recent Saturday afternoon building a civilization with his friends. “We’re mining minerals and diamonds and emeralds and stuff,” he said. “I like working with other people like this. It’s exciting.”

Harrison is one of several participants in the Carson City Library’s Habits of Mind (Craft), where youth are invited to play the adventuring video game Minecraft that allows them to collaborate in building structures as well as entire communities.
