Don’t forget a doggie-bag after a meal at Adele’s today: the Bone Appetit fundraiser for the Nevada Humane Society goes on all day.

In the 2015 session, the Legislature considered no fewer than 15 new or expanded programs intended to increase student achievement.
But... None of the proposals have anything to do with improving education in the only place where education takes place -- and can be improved -- IN THE CLASSROOM.
PK: Detractors of the program say research shows smaller class sizes have a mixed impact on student performance, and having a quality teacher in the room is more important than having fewer students.

Candidates for Carson City Mayor and State Assembly District 40 addressed a nearly full house of voters at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall Wednesday night during a candidate forum sponsored by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce.
The candidates participated in a structured debate moderated by Nevada Appeal Editor Adam Trumble.
As a group, they were asked questions on specific topics and each given two minutes to provide a response.

Vietnam veteran returns to find remains of fellow Marine

In his quest to find the remains of his boyhood friend and fellow Marine lost to the mountains of Vietnam, Michael Archer met a solider for the other side.
“He looked at me and he had tears in his eyes,” Archer recalled. “He said, ‘You know, we’re pretty lucky.’ I started crying. You never expect to hear that from a man you were trying to kill.”
Archer’s latest book, “The Long Goodbye,” traces the story of Lance Corporal Thomas Patrick Mahoney III, who disappeared during the bloody, months-long Battle of Khe Sanh.

Awareness key to addressing child welfare needs in Carson City

Carson City Republican Party Terminates Membership of Assemblyman PK O'Neill

There has been much press and he has a very good writer who accentuates his few highly selective non-controversial votes while in the legislature and ignores the bulk of his decisions. Obviously our action is not due to his non-challenging votes but rather his many dubious ones. He does not acknowledge his campaign promises. He does not discuss attending a CCRP meeting at which he asked for our direction on this tax issue.

April 27, 2016 - 9:45am Recently Ron spoke to an industry group about the petition to give voters the final say this fall on the onerous Commerce Tax passed by the Legislature and Governor last year.
A lawyer for referendum opponents also spoke, and we were appalled at their attitude toward Nevada voters and the grossly false arguments they make against a referendum.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

Hundreds of tiny pinwheels were planted Friday morning on the lawn in front of the Nevada Legislature building, facing Carson Street, to raise awareness of child abuse around the state and in the community.
The month of April is designated as Child Abuse Prevention Month.
Several pinwheels, made of paper with hand-drawn and colored designs, were created by area children.

After this morning, there will be pinwheels sprouting from the lawn in front of the Legislature, and you are welcome to help in the planting. In downtown Carson City, there are a number of businesses that can make a case for being fixtures, storied parts of the Nevada state capital.
But few are as endearing to so many as Mom and Pop's Diner.

Carson Street is the main drag through town, always was, always will be, for going between the north and south sides of town. Just look on the map. CARSON CITY, Nev. – Assemblyman PK O’Neill filed today for re-election to his Assembly District 40 seat, encompassing Carson City and parts of southern Washoe County east of Highway 395.
“I filed because I believe that the Capital District deserves effective representation in the Nevada Assembly,” the Carson City Republican said. “When I originally filed, I pledged to listen to everyone in Assembly District 40, to consider their views and all available information, and to apply my own principles in voting for legislation. I believe that my actions are in accord with the majority of my constituents.”

The Nevada State Democrats released the following statement regarding the death of Nevada State Senator Debbie Smith of Sparks. She was 60:
"The Nevada Senate Democratic Caucus announced today that Senator Debbie Smith has passed away. The thoughts and prayers of the Senate Democrats and caucus staff are with Senator Smith’s family. Details for a public memorial service will be announced in the coming days."

Carson City voter registration up in 2016

More registered voters have been recorded in Carson City so far this year than at the same time two years ago during the last election season, according to January 2016 voter registration data collected by the Nevada Secretary of State’s Office.
More than 27,600 registered voters were recorded in Carson City as of January 2016, the Secretary of State’s Office reports.
Increased voter registration, in fact, appears to be a statewide trend, too, the Secretary of State’s Office also reports.
