Assemblyman PK O’Neill files for re-election in Assembly District 40
CARSON CITY, Nev. – Assemblyman PK O’Neill filed today for re-election to his Assembly District 40 seat, encompassing Carson City and parts of southern Washoe County east of Highway 395.
“I filed because I believe that the Capital District deserves effective representation in the Nevada Assembly,” the Carson City Republican said. “When I originally filed, I pledged to listen to everyone in Assembly District 40, to consider their views and all available information, and to apply my own principles in voting for legislation. I believe that my actions are in accord with the majority of my constituents.”
O’Neill described the 78th Regular Session of the Nevada Legislature as “successful, because we enacted numerous reforms dealing with construction, education funding, stabilizing the Public Employees’ Retirement System of Nevada and allowing increased local government reserves within their budget.”
O’Neill said the Legislature also increased funding for the state’s community colleges, provided for Educational Savings Accounts, and veteran’s suicide awareness training, among other bills.
Noting all five of the legislative bills he introduced were enacted into law, O’Neill said he was able to achieve this unique feat for a first term legislator by working with legislators of both parties from around the state, with interest groups and with the affected agencies.
“I am proud of that record, and pleased that one of those bills made improvements in the Prevailing Wage law,” he said. “It has already assisted Carson City in bids for local street repairs.”
O’Neill said he is “looking forward to working to ensure that Nevada continues moving forward with a new economy for the 21st Century, and to ensure that there is accountability and positive results with the educational funding programs.”
Appointed to various interim committees including, Committee on Senior Citizens, Veterans and Adults with Special Needs, Legislative Commission on Child Welfare and Juvenile Justice, Advisory Committee on Nevada Criminal Justice Information Services and the Advisory Committee to Study Laws Concerning Sex Offender Registration, O’Neill additionally, serves on the State Emergency Response Commission and the Carson City Local Emergency Planning Committee. His 2015 Session committee assignments were Commerce and Labor, Judiciary and Transportation.
Retired from a 40-year career in law enforcement, which included 30 years with the Nevada Department of Public Safety, O’Neill has lived in the Carson City area for over 36 years. He and his wife Nancy have four grown children and 3 grandchildren.
