Carson High students take on Greenhouse Project as awareness and fundraising senior project

“Honestly, we didn’t know until last spring about The Greenhouse Project even though the facility is on campus,” said Shaylin Segura, who with fellow Carson High School senior Sophie Waite, have for their Senior Project endeavored to raise community awareness about and $5,000 for The Greenhouse Project.

Carson City Ward 1 Supervisor Karen Abowd invites the community to the monthly walkabout, Friday, Oct. 21 at Mills Park. This is an opportunity for citizens to take their ideas and concerns to her for discussion and possible action moving forward.

Abowd hs hosted these events since her first election, as a means for better governance. To participate, meet on the steps of Carson City Community Center at noon. Feel free to take a sack lunch.

Adele's Celebrity Chef and Harvest Dinner to Benefit the Greenhouse Project

Tickets are now on sale for the annual Celebrity Chef and Harvest Dinner, which takes place Nov. 7 at Cafe at Adele’s. This is one of three fundraisers conducted each year for The Greenhouse Project, whose mission it is to continue “growing a greener and healthier community,” according to Karen Abowd, board president, who co-owns Cafe at Adele’s with her husband, Chef Charlie Abowd.

McDonald's to Host Grand Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for "Home Means Nevada" Mural

McDonald’s restaurant is set to display their new mural “Home Means Nevada” on October 11, 2016 at 2PM at the McDonald’s, 2001 N. Carson St. in Carson City. The mural’s ribbon cutting ceremony will include artist Erik Burke, Carson City Supervisor, Karen Abowd, and Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell. The mural encompasses historic leaders that have impacted Nevada including: Jack Johnson, Bertha Raffetto, Abraham Curry, Sarah Winnemucca, Kit Carson, and Julia Bulette.

She began the Walkabout as part of her original campaign promise to engage directly with her constituents.

Gratitude

Tonight, after reading about the horrible event in Nice, France, we attended the benefit for the Carson City Greenhouse. It was the Eighth Concert Under The Stars. Hundreds of us gathered to raise money for our Community Greenhouse, which produces healthy produce for our food banks, the High School Culinary Program, and supports programs for our youth, including the Future Farmers of America, and the special need program.

The Rowans to bring Americana rock favorites as 2016 Concert Under the Stars opening act

Carson City has had the pleasure of welcoming Rowan brothers, Lorin and Chris over the years as they’ve played at Cafe at Adele’s. This year is no different, but with one exception: In addition to opening Concert Under the Stars, A Benefit For The Greenhouse Project, Thursday, July 14, The Rowans also play at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 13, on the veranda.

Some downtown businesses hurt by bike race closures

While the inaugural Epic Rides Carson City Off-Road mountain bike race series may have been a boon to the local economy, some downtown businesses struggled to stay out of the red last weekend because of what they felt were excessive road closures for the first-time event.

The inaugural Carson City Off-Road racing series, part of the Epic Rides mountain biking circuit, was more than successful.

It was epic.

Todd Sadow, co-founder and president of Epic Rides, said the race around the Nevada state capital exceeded expectations.

Live music can be found at a stage on Musser Street, the Brewery Arts Center, and most all of our casinos. A huge welcome goes out to those in town for the Annual Pow Wow at Stewart Indian School. Don't forget that Fathers' Day is Sunday: plenty of our local shops have something just perfect for the man in your life.

Nevada Humane Society May dining fundraiser gets $2,000 donation from Cafe at Adele's

Cafe at Adele’s in Carson City presented the Nevada Humane Society a check for $2,000 Friday from the May 26 Bone Appetit fundraiser at the restaurant.

Adele’s owners Karen and Charlie Abowd made the donation, which was 25 percent of the restaurant’s total sales for the all-day event. It was Cafe at Adele’s first fundraiser for Nevada Humane Society.

Recently, an article was posted to Carson Now by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension promoting a spring plant sale fundraiser for The Greenhouse Project, located behind Carson High School.

Although the article itself seemed very non-controversial, the comments posted to it were anything but.

Applications being accepted for Carson City redevelopment facade improvement grants

The Carson City Redevelopment Authority is offering grants of up to $25,000 to improve the exterior façades of commercial buildings within the Redevelopment District. The grant can be used to make improvements to the exterior of existing commercial buildings, including signs. The grant requires the property owner to pay at least half the cost of the improvements. A total of $200,000 has been allocated to the program.

With so many changes taking place in Carson City, and the many opportunities and challenges that come with that, means the public’s input is needed more than ever, Abowd said.

“Everyone having a say, sharing their ideas makes our governence more effective in crafting longterm beneficial outcomes for the community,” she said. “The weather this week is going to be lovely and I look forward to hearing from everyone.”

Holiday spirit in full swing at Adele's

Adele's collection of toys and donations to help needy children in the Carson City area was a success today as hundreds of people filed through the restaurant to enjoy food, drink, and holiday spirit. The event is still going until 2pm today, so there is still time to take part in the festivities.
