Outdoors with Don Q: Pyramid Lake cutthroat trout season closes June 30

Pyramid Lake, which is located about 30 miles north of Reno-Sparks, will close on Thursday, June 30 to fishing for Lahontan cutthroat trout.
That large, desert lake (roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe) has a three-month trout closure, each year, from July 01 to September 30. On Oct. 1, it will re-open for the 2011-2012 cutthroat fishing season.

New license plate to help fund NDOW programs

After a five-year journey, the Nevada Department of Wildlife's first-ever license plate is set to be released in late June or early July.

Proceeds from the sale of the "Conserve Wildlife" plate will provide sorely needed funding for NDOW's wildlife education and volunteer programs.

If you did not draw a big game tag in the recent completed main draw, don’t give up just yet. There are still tags left for the upcoming second draw.

Remaining tags for Mule Deer - Antlered - Longbow (hunt 1341) and Antelope - Horns Longer than Ears - Longbow (hunts 2161 and 2261) will be available to both residents and nonresidents.

Gov. Sandoval Announces Appointment Of New Administration Department Director

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval today announced he has appointed Jeff Mohlenkamp as director of the Department of Administration effective July 11.
“I am pleased to announce that Jeff has agreed to join the team and lead the Department of Administration,” Sandoval said. “With more than 20 years of experience in state government, Jeff’s depth and breadth of experience across several agencies will be a strong asset to both my office and the department as a whole.”

Free Film Series at the Brewery Arts Center Begins Friday

The Brewery Arts Center in Carson City and ACCtv will launch a new Friday Films Series on June 17. The family friendly fun begins with a five week series of short films for children. Admission is free. All showings are at 6:30pm in the Performance Hall.

South Tahoe gaming 'wins' up sharply for April, Carson City down 3 percent

Statewide gaming revenues for Nevada casinos were down about a half of a percent in April, with a 3 percent decrease for the Carson City area, but up by nearly 15 percent for South Shore Lake Tahoe, the state's Gaming Control board reports this morning.

Nevada to recognize carry concealed weapons permits of 15 states

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Sheriffs’ and Chiefs’ Association members agreed at a meeting last month to recognize the carry concealed weapon permits of 15 states as being valid in Nevada beginning July 1.

The states agreed to at the May 5 meeting are: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, Tennessee and West Virginia, according to a news release submitted by Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Final reminder of Nevada’s 2011 Free Fishing Day

CARSON CITY — This is a final reminder that Saturday, June 11 is Nevada’s Free Fishing Day for the year 2011.
On that day, you can fish anywhere you want, and you will not need to have a Nevada fishing license or a Nevada Trout Stamp or a Nevada Second Rod Stamp. However, you will need to abide by whatever the rules and regulations are for whatever water(s) you will fish on that special day.

If you would like to fish on June 11, be advised that the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) will have planted many thousands of rainbow trout in our Western Nevada waters.

Reaction Mixed To Education, Policy Reforms Achieved As Part Of Deal To End Legislative Session

CARSON CITY – While some critics may never be convinced that Gov. Brian Sandoval should have agreed to support new tax revenue to balance the budget, the collection of reforms approved as part of the deal finalized this morning cannot be ignored.
From changes to Nevada’s collective bargain law allowing the reopening of labor agreements in emergencies to limiting teacher tenure to eliminating health insurance for newly hired state employees upon retirement – the changes approved in the 120-day legislative session by Democrats and Republicans could have far reaching impacts.

Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Rates Drop By 37.5 Percent In Nevada

CARSON CITY – Insurance Commissioner Brett Barratt said today that rates for the high risk pool in the federal Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) for Nevada have been reduced by 37.5 percent by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services starting July 1.
“This is great news for the thousands of uninsured Nevadans eligible for the PCIP,” Barratt said. “These rate decreases make PCIP more affordable and comparable to the commercial market for individuals.”
