Here is this week's fishing report of rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, Northern California and the Sierra. This report is for the week of Jan. 1-7, 2014. Wednesday, Jan. 1 is opening day at Topaz Lake. More than 50,000 fish have been stocked by Nevada in advance of the opener.

Your best bet, at least for now, is to stay off any ice until it is determined the ice is thick enough to hold human weight. Ice fishing reports should trickle in over the coming weeks. This report is for the week of Dec. 11-17.

Tree permits at Lake Tahoe sell out; permits available at nearby Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest

There was a run on Christmas trees in the Lake Tahoe Basin over Thanksgiving weekend. The bad news is that all 2,500 permits were snagged and there won't be anymore issued between now and Christmas.

The good news is nearby Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, which has 5,000 permits this season, continues to sell them at a rapid clip, Forest Service officials said.

Hello fellow anglers, Time is running short if you plan on fishing the rivers in Alpine County.
November 15, 2013 is the last day to fish on any of the rivers in California, with the exception of a few that will remain open to catch and release.

In our local area, the east fork of the Carson River from Hangman's Bridge to the Nevada state line is on that list.
Check your CDFW regulation book for other tributaries that will remain open. All of the lakes in Inyo and Mono Counties will also close on November 15th.

This is my annual reminder that it’s almost time to have fun fishing in the High Sierras once again.
On Saturday, April 27 the 2013 fishing season will open for all applicable lakes, reservoirs, streams, creeks and rivers in the State of California.

That season will then remain open until Friday, Nov. 15.

If you’re new to this area, here’s some information that can be useful if you would like to fish on that Opening Day or the entire Opening Weekend:

Carson City, Douglas County designated disaster areas by USDA because of drought conditions

Carson City and nearby Douglas County as well as Esmerelda and White Pine counties have been designated disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by recent drought, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirms today in a news release.

And the following California counties contiguous to Nevada have also been declared disaster areas because of drought conditions: Alpine, El Dorado, Inyo, Mono and Placer.

Christmas tree permits sell out in Lake Tahoe, continue on BLM land in the Pinenut Mountains

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit Christmas tree permits are sold out but tree cutting permits remain available on BLM lands in the Pinenut Mountains between Carson City and Yerington, the Clan Alpine and Desatoya mountains east of Fallon, and the Excelsior Mountains southeast of Hawthorne.

Carson City authorities arrest suspects on weapons, fraud and battery charges

A 71-year-old Carson City man was booked into jail on Sept. 24 on a warrant stemming from two charges of assault with a deadly weapon. Francis John Belongia, was arrested in the 4000 block of Stampede Drive without incident. Bail was set at $20,000.
In other felony-related arrests:
— A Dayton woman faces a felony charge of fraudulent use of a credit card or debit card without consent. Cynthia Marie Shelley, 31, was arrested Sept. 26. in the 1900 block of North Carson Street. She was arrested following a felony warrant issued by the Carson City Justice Court. Bail was set at $7,500.

Body found may be that of missing Carson City doctor

Searchers hunting for missing Carson City doctor Gary Dankworth found the body of a man late Wednesday night during their search, confirmed a spokeswoman for the Inyo County Sheriff's Department.

Though the body has not been confirmed as that of Dankworth, KOLO8 is reporting that Carson-Tahoe Health issued the following statement:

“The Carson Tahoe family is saddened by the news of Dr. Dankworth’s death. The past several days have been difficult and we, like the rest of the community, have been hoping for the best. We are a small, close knit community and tragedies within our medical staff affect us all. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and we will do all we can to support them during this very sad time,” said Ed Epperson, President and CEO.

History will come to life at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City during the five-day celebration of Independence Day. Visitors can ride a train pulled by steam locomotive No. 25 Saturday, June 30 through Tuesday, July 3, and photograph significant cars on special outdoor display including the fully restored McKeen motor car. On the Fourth of July, the rare McKeen motor car will operate on the rails offering passengers rides all day.

It’s almost time to have fun in the High Sierras once again.
On Saturday, April 28 the 2012 fishing season will open for all applicable lakes, reservoirs, streams, creeks and rivers in California. The season will then remain open until Thursday, Nov. 15.

The U.S. Forest Service and organizers of Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month are working together to promote and recognize the event at Lake Tahoe and elsewhere, highlighting the health benefits of winter outdoor activity.

Legislation to bring ski industry jobs to California

California is expected to see a boost in its local mountain economies as a result of a new legislation that now permits year-long recreation opportunities on U.S. Forest Service ski areas. The Ski Area Recreational Opportunity Enhancement Act of 2011, which was signed by President Barack Obama on Nov. 7, is estimated to create and annually sustain up to 600 extra jobs nationwide.
