Family donation makes Nevada State Railroad Museum exhibit possible

The four children of Jack and Margie Gibson have honored their parents’ decades-long service to the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Carson City, with a $40,000 donation that enabled the museum’s latest exhibition.

Spreading Holiday Cheer with Boosted Carson City Santa Train Experience

Celebrating its 27th year, the popular Santa Train took a new approach to this year’s programming by enhancing the event with upgraded amenities, expanding to 3 weekends, and optimizing participation by launching a new online ticketing system.

Dr. Todd Gray, DDS and Dr. Heather Parsons, DMD of Valley Pediatric Dentistry, thought this year provided an outstanding opportunity to assist the museum’s efforts by encouraging local businesses to help sponsor the event through donations for holiday decorations and supplies not provided by the museum budget.

Glenbrook restoration wins international award

Restoration of the historic 1875 steam locomotive “The Glenbrook” has been recognized with an international award from the Association of Tourist Railroads and Railway Museums.
The narrow gauge engine at the Nevada State Museum, Carson City debuted in May following 30 years of painstaking care to bring it back to authentic and historic condition, thanks to a generous grant from the E.L. Wiegand Foundation.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announces findings on species petitions in California and Nevada

Holy convergence at Railroad Museum: Nevada restored, Vatican approved

Sunday mornings at the Nevada State Railroad Museum can be very, very special. On this Sunday morning we find three steam locomotives - the narrow gauge Glenbrook unveiled Saturday, circa 1875, the standard gauge Inyo, also circa, 1875, and the standard gauge V&T No. 25, circa 1905 converging at the Diamond and blessed by Father Joe from the Vatican.

Train buffs and dignitaries gathered at the Nevada Rail Road Museum under rainy skies, Saturday for the unveiling of the Glenbrook, a historic locomotive that once hauled lumber from Lake Tahoe sawmills to Spooner Summit.

“Nowhere else can you see an event like this,” said Peter Barton, Administrator of the Division of Museums and History. “We’ve done research before we started restoring, we spent months with historians and researchers. The locomotive has been painstakingly restored, no where else can you find a locomotive that has had so much time spent working on it.”

It’s a Railroad kind of weekend in Carson City. The historic 1885 Glenbrook Steam Engine will be on display Saturday, all steamed up with the Inyo at the Nevada Railroad Museum. You will want to arrive before the dedication ceremony at 11 a.m. to get the best photos. The V and T Steam Engine #25 will be running all weekend if you want to take a ride. It’s also opening weekend for the Virginia and Truckee that departs from the Eastgate Depot for Virginia City. Roundtrips sell out fast, so make sure to get a reservation if you want to go.

SATURDAY:

  • Memorial Day Specials at Empire Ranch Golf Course (free 18 holes with Military I.D.; free bucket of balls if wearing red, white, and blue; free draft beer if wearing camouflage)

By 1943, it was saved from scrap and donated by the Bliss Family to the Nevada State Museum, where it pleased countless youngsters who crawled all over it outside the museum’s doors on Carson Street for four decades. Restored by the Nevada State Railroad Museum, it is under steam again.

Sierra passes opening for season

State Route 108 over Sonora Pass has opened in time for the opening of trout fishing season in the Eastern Sierra on Saturday, April 25 according to Caltrans.

Also opening is State Route 120 (west) Mono County, Tioga Pass Road, to the East Yosemite Park Entrance Gate. State Route 120 is closed beyond this point. Users can access State Route 120 for recreational activities from the junction of US 395 at Lee Vining up to the park entrance closure gate.

This is my annual reminder that it’s almost time to have fun fishing in the Golden State once again. On Saturday, April 25 the 2015 fishing season will open for all applicable lakes, reservoirs, streams, creeks and rivers in the State of California.

That season will then remain open until Saturday, Nov. 15. If you’re new to this area, here’s some information that can be useful if you would like to fish on that Opening Day or for the entire Opening Weekend:

Elaine and I just returned from a mini vacation in Lone Pine, California, where we spent three days and two nights, having fun goofing off. The original purpose of our trip was to fish for trout in its nearby Diaz Lake, however those plans were reluctantly cancelled due to high winds.

Forest Service and BLM make revisions to sage-grouse draft environmental statement

Revisions made to a draft Environmental Impact Statement designed to protect sage-grouse habit were announced Thursday by the supervisor of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.

The Forest Service and BLM management plan amendments will specifically enhance management direction for the Bi-state sage-grouse habitat. This Bi-state sage-grouse population occurs in portions of Lyon, Mineral, Esmeralda, and Douglas counties in Nevada and in portions of Alpine, Inyo, and Mono counties in California.

Nevada 150 events planned throughout July

Many celebrations are scheduled statewide in the month of July. These Nevada 150 events help celebrate all things Nevada and bring awareness to the state’s 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held July 1 through July 12.

With all the flavorings of the Old West, the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City will showcase several of its trains for the July 4 weekend.

It's living history on the rails when steam locomotives V&T No. 25 and the famous Inyo will operate along with the historic, self-propelled McKeen motor car Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Rides will be available behind the 25 and on the McKeen car every 45 minutes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Lyon among nine Nevada counties to get federal primary disaster status due to drought

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has designated nine counties in Nevada as primary natural disaster areas due to the drought. The counties included are Lyon, Washoe, Churchill, Mineral, Lander, Pershing, Clark, Nye and Humboldt.

Farmers and ranchers in Carson City, Douglas and Storey counties as well as Esmeralda, Lincoln, White Pine, Elko and Eureka counties also qualify for natural disaster assistance because their counties are contiguous.
