Carson City unemployment edges down in July to 6.5 percent

Unemployment in Carson City fell to 6.5 percent in July after seeing a slight increase in June, according to figures released Tuesday by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

Carson High School CTE’s new manufacturing instructor works with area manufacturers

John Doiron, Carson High School’s Career and Technical Education’s new manufacturing instructor, stood in front of the Carson City Area Manufacturers Forum in early June to outline his plan for the manufacturing program and to ask for their support in sharing their knowledge to develop curriculum, being guest speakers in class and inviting students in to their facilities for field trips, internships and other work-based learning experiences.

Marijuana clouds issue of workplace drug use

All employers must protect their workers, their customers and themselves when it comes to illicit drug use in the workplace. Doing so will become especially crucial if Nevadans, through November’s ballot, vote to legalize the recreational sale and regulation of marijuana and related products.

This was the primary message of a “Marijuana in the Workplace” lecture delivered Friday at the Carson City Chamber of Commerce’s Soup’s On! luncheon, in collaboration with Partnership Carson City and the city’s district attorney’s office.

With the announcement earlier this month that Western Nevada College has partnered with Panasonic Energy of North America’s gigafactory, accelerated training classes will begin June 20 in Carson City and continue through the summer.

The Brewery Arts Center hosts the Carson City Classic Cinema Club the first Tuesday of each month; join them this evening for trivia and a showing of John Wayne's 'Stagecoach.' Dance the night away to the sounds of big band or cowboys: swing dance lessons are at El Charro Avita, while country line dancing can be found in the Eleventh Frame Lounge at Carson Lanes.

Mountain biking event to take Carson City on epic economic ride

A special event slated to debut in Carson City this month is expected to benefit the the local economy on a graduated basis each year through 2020.

It’s estimated that Carson City Off-Road would generate $1 to $1.5 million in local revenue in 2016, said Joel Dunn, executive director, Carson City Visitors Bureau. About 30 percent of that would be spent for lodging and the rest for retail, restaurants and bars.
