UPDATE: A ground-breaking ceremony for the new Classy Seconds Thrift Store was held Thursday at the site located at 3591 Gordon Street in Carson City.

80+ homes are participating in the 17th annual Saratoga Springs Estates Garage Sale, selling furniture, household items, sports equipment and vehicles. Some homes selling food, water, lemonade. Community provides a porta-potty in the park for visitors/buyers. Starts 8 a.m. and closes by 3 p.m. Main entrance to community is at intersection of Stephanie and South Santa Barbara. Drivers may also enter off of Vicky at Jackie Lane or South Santa Barbara.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada will host a clothing drive this week in conjunction with Western Nevada College's Earth Day activities held at the Carson City campus.

What began Friday and runs through today, Saturday, Sierra Lutheran High School is holding its second annual community rummage sale to benefit their athletics department. All proceeds and funds raised at this event will go directly to the school.

Sewing notions, crafting items, sewing machines, etc. are all welcome donations. Students and staff at Eagle Valley Middle School (EVMS) in Carson City took up a collection on behalf of Faith, Hope, Love of Northern Nevada and Northern Nevada HotSpot to provide clothing and other necessary items for those in need, said Northern Nevada HotSpot owner Cassidy Davis, who also coordinates the efforts of Faith, Hope, Love of Northern Nevada.

Little to no rain in January doesn’t bode well for trees and shrubs this spring and summer. The annual Carson City / Storey County 4-H Fabulous Fabric and Rummage Sale will be held Saturday and Sunday February 14 and 15, 2015 at Fuji Park Exhibition Hall in Carson City.

The sale is a project of the Carson City/Storey County Leaders Council. All sale proceeds benefit the council’s scholarship fund.

One of the favorite Itemized Deductions to claim on form 1040, Schedule A is the gifts to church and charity. Here are some of the IRS rules on the law provisions and general substantiation requirements to keep in mind.

Clothing and household items donated to charity must be in good used condition or better. Donors must get a written acknowledgment from the charity for all gifts worth $250 or more, including a description of the items donated. In practice we find the receipt from the charity do not usually list the items in detail and certainly do not give values of each item.

When the Sierra-Tahoe Unit-137 of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association asked for donations in an inaugural “drive by” collection Saturday for homeless veterans recently placed in housing, Carson City residents answered the call.

Hundreds of slightly used and new household items filling more than a hundred boxes were collected Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Hall on 2nd and Curry Street. The “Drive by Car Hop” exceeded all expectations, organizers say.

On Oct. 25, the Sierra-Tahoe Unit-137 of the Ladies Auxiliary - Fleet Reserve Association will be collecting basic kitchen and bath items for homeless veterans recently placed in housing who have few, if any, possessions or the financial means to equip themselves with these basic, daily necessities.

Donors can “drive by” between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. and pull up curbside at the Veterans Memorial Hall at 2nd and Curry streets in downtown Carson City where the Auxiliary’s “car-hop” members will be on hand to receive the donated items directly from the donor’s car.

A senior project for a Carson City high school student that involved "extreme couponing" for two months netted more than $1,100 worth of goods that he donated to area veterans.

Dallas Burnett, a Carson High School senior, managed to find, clip, cut, and ultimately save $818.56 in grocery and household items that he donated to the Veterans Guest House in Reno.

Carson City’s Greenhouse Project will hold a plant and yard sale on Saturday, May 19th from 8am to noon. Several varieties of seedlings and small plants will be available including tomatoes, peppers and petunias. The Greenhouse opened in December 2011, these plants are the first crops grown in the facility. There will also be a yard sale of donated items including restaurant supplies and household items. All money raised will benefit the Greenhouse Project.

The Greenhouse Project is located on the campus of Carson High School, 1111 N. Saliman in Carson City.
