I’m keeping my fingers crossed for clear skies, but there are rumors of snow flurries. Luckily there are indoor and outdoor activities, no matter what blows our way. At the top of the list for today is Winter, Wine, Spirits, and All That Jazz at the Brewery Arts Center. Their annual fundraiser is not to be missed.

We’ll wake up to sunshine, but some snow may be in the cards this afternoon. Please drive safe when it’s slick out. ‘Our Story, Inc.’ takes you on a tour of Black History in Northern Nevada in the foyer of the Legislature; they’ll be on hand at the Carson Library this evening for a special Black History Month Celebration. Get a jump on spring cleaning and lend a hand to the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program. You’ll find their clothing drive at Red’s Old 395 from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. Show off your skills at Retro Replay if you fancy yourself a Smash Bros.

Happily ever after is usually dismissed as a Disney movie ending, but bring your Mickey Mouse knowledge to the Carson Library for a family friendly trivia night. Jazz in on the menu at Living the Good Life, in addition to some delicious dinner options. February sounds so much closer to spring than January did. As the week comes to a close and the month just begins we welcome several new art exhibits around town. The Carson Visitor Center hosts the Great Basin Native Artists, Western Nevada College students are the talent at the BRIC, and Capital City Arts Initiative features Gil Martin in the Courthouse Gallery. Happy Birthday Nevada. My favorite holiday has arrived, and with it a mountain of fun to be had. Normally my weekend list is sorted by chronological start time, but for this one I will be separating out the downtown parade related activities for your ease. Remember, rain is expected on Friday and Sunday, so consider an umbrella if you don’t want your make-up to run!

It’s that time of year again. The ghosts and ghouls come out of hiding and paint the town orange. Halloween isn’t just one night around here. Combined with the festivities of Nevada Day, you can be sure to enjoy at least a week’s worth of celebrating.

Ahoy, mateys. ‘Tis International Talk Like a Pirate Day, so don’t ye be a scallywag. Grab a bucko or a pair 'n make sail fer a jolly the hour. Roust up some spiced grog, or sin' a shanty at th' Firkin 'n Fox. Monday Night Football sees the Eagles battle the Chicago Bears; most everywhere in town will have the game on. Western Nevada College celebrates National Hispanic-Latino Month with a special spoken word poetry performance by the talented Gabriela Garcia Medina. Have a great day. Monday has returned, but it is bringing football with it. A double dose of grid-iron action is on the way. Karaoke has returned to the Firkin and Fox for those who don’t have a pigskin addiction. Poet Glade A. Myler will be at the Browser’s Corner Book Store for a meet and greet and book signing. Shake off the Monday blues with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club; their night out at El Charro Avita kicks off at 6pm.

MONDAY:

Welcome back, Wildcats. Western Nevada College kicks off a week of festivities at today with some free donuts and pizza. Those not headed back to school might be headed back to the Playa: Burning Man has begun, so keep your eyes peeled for some crazy looking cars on the road. A new exhibit featuring local high school artists can be found downtown in the Community Development building next to City Hall.

Time to hit the books, Carson City, the new school year begins today. Keep an eye out for kids on bikes and in crosswalks all over town, and please drive safely. Mondays are usually quiet in our valley, but you’ll find the High Sierra Swing Dance Club jazzing it up at El Charro Avita. Head up to Gold Hill for a tour of their haunted hotel and stick around for drinks or dinner. Have some family fun at Carson Lanes: games are only $1 all day.

MONDAY:

• Carson City School District’s First Day of School

Carson kids have one last week to lay about, while their neighbors in Douglas and Lyon County are headed back to school. Jazz and Beyond continues with some fun times downtown. Me and Bobby McGee will appear in the Comma Courtyard, followed by the Rosebud Dance Band in the McFadden Plaza. Head to the Carson City Library to meet the Heroes of the Carson City Fire Department as part of the ongoing series, ‘What’s up in your community?’ Keep reading for all of Monday’s options.

Just a few more weeks until the kids head back to school, so get out and enjoy the summer while you can. Jazz and Beyond brings a free outdoor concert to the Minnesota Street Stage at the Brewery Arts Center this evening. It’s the Carson Dreamers tonight, but you can go HERE for all of the upcoming music festival events. The Nevada Arts Council welcomes Justin Favela’s new exhibit to their OXS Gallery with a reception and talk by the artist.

August means many things: Hot August Nights, the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival, the return of football, and the last few weeks of summer vacation. The construction downtown is showing signs of advancement with the recent completion of the Bob McFadden Plaza.

Get thee to a gallery! Carson City has three art exhibits in their last week of viewing: the Spirit of America Show at the Nevada Artist Association Gallery, ‘Vantage Point of Distance’ by Dave Rowe at the Nevada Arts Council’s OXS Gallery, and ‘Always Lost: A Meditation on War’ on display in the Western Nevada College Gallery. This week will also see receptions for two of those exhibits. The Nevada Arts Council welcomes Dave Rowe on Tuesday.

Have you been to a Reno Aces game yet? You may as well go tonight, help raise money for our local Boys and Girls Club, and enjoy America’s pastime. Go HERE to order tickets. Learn more about our community at the Carson City Library this evening; special guests from the Brewery Arts Center will explain what the center has to offer. If you’re looking for something family friendly, Carson Lanes won’t break the bank. Games only cost $1 per person all day long.

It is the eleventh day of the seventh month and that means free slurpee day at 7-Eleven. There are few better ways to celebrate a sunny, summer day than with a cold, slushy beverage. Head over to the Carson Library for a fun adventure into science with ‘Up, Up, and Away’: smoke rings, hot air balloons, and more. The members of the High Desert Swing Dance Club get together on Monday at El Charro Avita to dance the night away.

Holy moly. Carson City is hopping with fun times for everyone. Enjoy Saturday downtown with the Third and Curry Farmers Market, the Downtown Business Association Wine Walk, and a free concert at the Brewery Arts Center. Mills Park features the return of the RSVP Carnival with rides, food, booths, games, and more.

If you thought that things were going to get quiet around town, I regret to inform you that there is one more incredible weekend on the horizon. The bicycles are off the hills, the rat-rods have sputtered home, but Independence Day weekend is next on the list. Rest up and start planning for fireworks. Mondays in Carson City are relatively quiet, but Ed's Doghouse is standing by with mimosa specials, Carson Lanes will let you bowl all day for $1 a game, and the Nevada Artists Association at the Brewery Art Center has a new show in the gallery that it would love you to come see.

The first full moon of June is known as the Strawberry Moon. The fact that it coincides with the summer solstice today is pretty rare indeed: a once in a lifetime occurrence. Enjoy this first day of summer and keep some water handy: things are heating up this week.

I hope everyone had a great weekend: the Nevada Fair, Farmers Market, and live music were just a few of the fun things that Carson offered. Begin your week with a visit to one of Carson City’s many art galleries: the Brewery Arts Center, the Courthouse, the Community Center, and the Visitor’s Center are just some of the venues. Head up to the Gold Hill Hotel for a Ghost Hunt, and stick around for dinner or a cocktail on their patio. Game night at Nerdvana is open to all board game lovers, but Game Night at Carson Cigar Company is meant only for those over 21.

Keep an eye out for cyclists, Carson City. Bike to work week has begun, so please slow down and share the road. You’ll find a new exhibit in the CCAI Gallery at the courthouse, so check it out after you cast your early vote in the primary. The Sacred Arts of Tibet Tour has brought the monks of the Gaden Shartse Phukhang Monastery back to the Brewery Arts Center; today they’ll perform a tea offering and give a presentation on happiness. Negroni week kicks off today at the Firkin and Fox, but several local bars are participating in this fundraiser.

Today we remember those who have fallen while defending our country. The Historic Stewart Cemetery on Snyder will feature a ceremony at 10 a.m. Lone Mountain Cemetery hosts a ceremony at 1 p.m. and the public is invited to help remove the several hundred flags that were placed on the graves of veterans at 4 p.m. Dayton Cemetery holds their service at 9 a.m. Enjoy a free bar-be-que at Evergreen Gene’s.
