Wednesday, Feb. 11: Things to do in Carson City

Event Date:
February 11, 2015 (All day)

If you are looking to take advantage of National Make a Friend Day, try one of our many art galleries to spark up a conversation with a stranger. You may also strike it rich while listening to Dave Leather play the blues at Comma Coffee, or tonight, during the first of many Jazz Jams that Sassafras will be home to. It’s also National Shut-in Visitation Day, so you could always make a new friend at one of Carson City’s nursing homes.

Monday, Feb. 9: Things to do in Carson City

Event Date:
February 9, 2015 (All day)

Monday is upon us and it’s drizzly. You could stay indoors and celebrate National Clean Out Your Computer Day, but there are a few reasons to put your umbrella to work. CW and Mr. Spoons will get your toes tapping at Comma Coffee at lunchtime. It’s the last week to catch the New Year’s Show at the NAA Gallery at the Brewery Arts Center. High Sierra Swing Dance Club will be dancing the night away at El Charro’s for their weekly Club Night Out.

It’s Carmen Miranda’s birthday, so I've included a YouTube video to bring a little Havana sunshine to this grey Nevada day.

Wednesday, Feb. 4: Things to do in Carson City

Event Date:
February 4, 2015 (All day)

Wonderful Wednesday is upon us, and one way to get over the hump is to head out for a good meal. If you haven’t heard yet, Sassafras has returned and is serving up its Eclectic fare in its new location right next to the Carson Hot Springs. Downtown, the Lake Tahoe Brewing Co. will be hosting the Chamber of Commerce for its Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting. Capital Eats inside Westside Pour House (former home of Mo and Sluggo’s) always has some tempting dishes. A little further north on Carson St., Living the Good Life Nightclub and Bistro has live music this evening and a delicious array of options on its menu.

Monday, Feb. 2: Things to do in Carson City

Event Date:
February 2, 2015 (All day)

A flurry has blown into town: not of the snow kind that we so sorely need, but one of Legislative activity. The 2015 Legislative season starts today, so please keep an eye out for increased activity in our downtown crosswalks.

Wednesday, Jan. 28: Things to do in Carson City

Event Date:
January 28, 2015 (All day)

Today, Mayor Bob Crowell will deliver the State of the City Address to the Chamber of Commerce’s Soup’s On luncheon. It is sold out, so for those without tickets, you can catch it online later this week.

If you have some Legos handy, you may want to commemorate the 57th Anniversary of the little brick’s patent while celebrating National Have Fun at Work Day. It’s probably a safer bet than trying to celebrate National Kazoo Day at work.

WEDNESDAY:

Monday, Jan. 26: Things to do in Carson City

Event Date:
January 26, 2015 (All day)

Hello there, Carson City. Monday is upon us again. That means toe-tapping lunchtime music at Comma Coffee with CW and Mr. Spoons. The soccer season is approaching, and you can sign-up for AYSO at the Carson City Library tonight from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. If you need to let off some steam tonight, head to the Firkin and Fox for karaoke.

MONDAY:

  • New Year’s Art Show at the Nevada Artists Association Gallery in the Brewery Arts Center (10am-4pm)

Wednesday, Jan. 21: Things to do in Carson City

Event Date:
January 21, 2015 (All day)

Let’s call this Roller Derby Wednesday. Carson’s own Victory Rollers are looking for fresh meat and are holding a six week class (off roller skates) to show everyone the ropes. They hope to see you tonight at Bordewich Elementary School. Just down the street, the Brewery Arts Center has an Improv workshop starting at 6:30 p.m. If you’ve wanted to attend the First Friday Improv, but have been a little shy, this is a great chance to learn about what goes on and how to jump in the fray. Be warned, you will probably have some fun.

Thursday, Jan. 15: Things to do in Carson City

Event Date:
January 15, 2015 (All day)

This Thursday is both National Strawberry Ice Cream Day and National Hat Day. You may want some ice cream for your vocal cords after you hit the Karaoke circuit; Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar, Caterpillar’s Hookah Lounge, and the Feisty Goat Pub all want to see you wearing your performing hat tonight. On a more local level, today also brings the annual State of the State address delivered by our Governor, Brian Sandoval.

THURSDAY:

Wednesday, Jan. 14: Things to do in Carson City

Event Date:
January 14, 2015 (All day)

Today is unofficially National Dress Up Your Pet Day. It’s pretty self-explanatory, so have some fun with this. If you dress up your pooch as William Tell, he’ll fit in perfectly at the Clear Creek Bowman Indoor Archery Shoot tonight at the Fuji Park Exhibition Hall. If your kitty looks pretty as a cowboy, then check out Country Line Dancing at the 11th Frame Lounge inside Carson Lanes.

WEDNESDAY:

Monday, Jan. 12: Things to do in Carson City

Event Date:
January 12, 2015 (All day)

This second Monday of January is also National Clean Off Your Desk Day. Start the workweek with a clean sweep and then clear your mind with the Dharma Zephyr Sangah Sitting Group. The ice rink is still in full swing, so make sure to visit before the end of the season.

Monday, Jan. 5: Things to do in Carson City

Event Date:
January 5, 2015 (All day)

The first Monday of the new year means that we swear-in our newly elected officials. You can witness both Carson City's swearing in and the state's ceremony today. Also kicking off today is a week long recycling program for your Christmas tree; just place it outside with your garbage on your regular trash pick up day.

MONDAY:

I don't know about you, but I am ecstatic to hear that this cold snap is on it's way out. It has been a chilly few days and I'm ready for my teeth to stop chattering. This first Friday of the year has plenty of options for fun. Join Mikey and Heidi at the Brewery Arts Center for Improv Night, enjoy some red-dirt country music at Caterpillar's Hookah Lounge (and make sure to wish proprietress, Dana, a happy birthday), or travel just outside our boundaries to see local favorites Notch 8 at the Genoa Bar.

What Works: Finding your happy

Sunday I spent the day at the Reno Earth Day Festival with some friends. It was really nice to sit down on the grass, bask in the sun, and slow down for a while.

I had brought a few toys with me, four bubble guns and a hula hoop. While we were playing with the bubbles, I took a moment to observe the crowd around me — everyone “finding their happy” in their own way.
