Spenser Dorsey belted a two-run homer and the Wildcats rapped out eight hits in the first three innings en route to an 8-2 victory over Trinidad State of Trinidad, Colo., at the Western District Tournament on Friday in Phoenix.
“A great job by our team of bouncing back, which they’ve done all year,” WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said. “It was an all-around team effort.
Carson City man sentenced on child pornography charges
Submitted by editor on Mon, 05/05/2014 - 4:20pmA Carson City man was sentenced Monday to 19 years in prison after pleading guilty to child pornography charges, including secretly videotaping female victims in the bathrooms of his home. After prison, he faces a lifetime of probation.
Marcus Gabriel Henderson was arrested by Special Agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations at his residence in Carson City in July 2013.
Nevada bicycle and pedestrian leaders recognized for advocacy

Awards were presented at the 12th annual Nevada Bicycle and Pedestrian Summit in Reno. The board praised individuals, agencies and groups for improving bicycle and pedestrian facilities, safety and advocacy.
Nevada secures $1 billion settlement in Lake Mead environmental cleanup battle

WNC Baseball: Wildcats Move into Second Place in Scenic West Athletic Conference
Submitted by editor on Fri, 03/21/2014 - 9:08pmWestern Nevada College moved into second place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball standings by winning a four-game series from host College of Southern Nevada on Thursday and Friday in Henderson.
The Wildcats, based in Carson City, won the first three games of the series before the Coyotes edged WNC 4-3 Friday to deny a sweep. WNC improved to 7-5 in the SWAC, trailing only Salt Lake (11-2). CSN is 4-8 in conference play.
Eagle Valley Middle School Competes in State Science Olympiad

Seventh-Ranked College of Southern Nevada Holds Off Wildcats

Freshman pitcher Katilyn Covione blanked the Coyotes for four innings, and the Wildcats had the tying and possible winning runs in scoring positions in the final inning before CSN nailed down a 3-2 Scenic West Athletic Conference victory.
The Coyotes started their Saturday sweep with a five-inning 11-2 victory.
WNC Softball: Coyotes defeat Wildcats twice despite homers by Septon, Rechel
Submitted by editor on Fri, 03/14/2014 - 9:45pmSophomores Jenny Rechel and Heather Septon slugged home runs, but Western Nevada College lost both ends of a softball doubleheader to seventh-ranked College of Southern Nevada by identical 11-3 scores on Friday in Henderson.
The wins moved the Coyotes (16-6) into a first-place tie with College of Southern Idaho (17-7) in the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings. WNC’s SWAC record dropped to 6-15.

WNC Baseball To Kick Off Conference Play At Home Against Salt Lake today, Sunday

Now WNC, which improved to 11-5 overall, will play Salt Lake, the only team to beat the Wildcats in Henderson, on Saturday and Sunday, March 1-2, at John L. Harvey Field. The conference-opening doubleheaders begin at noon both days, weather permitting.

Pinch-hitter Paul Martinez tied the game with a run-scoring single in the eighth inning, and the Tigers won it when Jeremy Alderman’s first pitch on an attempted intentional walk with runners on third and second bases sailed to the backstop.

The work featured in Robin Stark: Ceramic Reflections represents a recent trend in which the artist’s ceramic forms become entirely sculptural. From the time spent in her first ceramic class in college, the material continues to engage Stark with its versatile and aesthetic qualities.
“The work fluctuates, presenting the viewer different considerations of what can be made in clay,” Stark said.

Northern Nevada communities connect for suicide prevention

The goal of the event is to increase awareness of the devastating effects suicide has on our nation and state, and to remember those who have been lost to suicide.
In Douglas County the Saturday, Sept. 14 walk will begin at Douglas City Historical Museum, 1477 Hwy 395 North, Gardnerville. Registration begins 8:00 am. In Yerington, the walk will be at the Boys and Girls Club, 124 N. Main St., Yerington. Registration begins at 10:30 am.

Nevada Arts Council awards 2014 Folklife Apprenticeship opportunities

The grants support projects developed by master artists and apprentices who share a common cultural background and an interest in preserving a specific traditional art.
A panel of specialists reviewed seven applications that requested $15,300 to support the work of master artists, along with supplies, tools, materials and related travel costs necessary to complete the apprenticeship. Five applicants were approved for full funding by the NAC board in June.
