Heading into Father’s Day weekend, there's plenty of jam-packed activities around the Carson City region. There's Flag Day ceremonies at the Nevada Veterans Memorial and at the Elks Lodge. The Stewart Father’s Day Powwow happens Friday to Sunday and features hundreds of American Indian dancers, drummers artists and cultural enthusiasts. Lace up the tennis shoes for the Eastside Historical tour of the capital city hosted by Muscle Powered. Journey of Hope returns to Western Nevada College at 5 p.m. to settle into the evening. Open Mic Night at A to Zen will cap-off an eventful Friday heading into the weekend.

Carson City Fire Department was called late Wednesday morning to a fully engulfed vehicle fire in the westbound lane of Highway 50 West on the valley side, around a mile past Golf Club Drive.

When families come to the Ron Wood Family Resource Center in Carson City, they are typically in desperate conditions.

“We see 80 percent of our clients in the last couple of weeks of the month,” explained Joyce Buckingham, executive director. “They have reached the end of their SNAP benefits or their social security or other benefits.”

I’ve been noticing all the new seedlings coming up around the yard: Currants, Oregon grape, penstemons, sumacs, catmint, caryopteris, feverfew, hardy geranium and many more. I did not plant these; the birds did. The seeds spread in the wind or I accidentally spread seeds when deadheading.

The Carson High School class of 2019 said their goodbyes to teachers June 5, most of the teachers finished their grades the same day and checked out June 7, and a few remaining teachers volunteered to help with graduation Saturday.

On Thursday at the Chamber's Annual Meeting, we welcome Lisa Lee as the 2019-2020 Chairman of the Board. She will be handed the gavel from current Chair Bob Fredlund as he moves to the Past President Position.

Kris Wells of AT&T moves from the board to the Executive Committee to take over as secretary/treasurer. All others move up one notch.

The Earthquake which shook our region just before 10 p.m. Thursday night has now been updated, with the epicenter thought to be near Washoe Lake, just past the Carson "county" lines.

Originally, the epicenter of the 3.7 magnitude quake was thought to have been located in South Reno near Arrowcreek Golf Course, 12 km from Carson City.

Just before 10 p.m. on Thursday night, a 3.7 magnitude earthquake shook 14 km south of Reno.

Reports of experiencing the quake are coming in from Reno to Dayton and Carson.

The epicenter appears to be located in mountains just above Arrowcreek Golf Course.

Recently, several CHS freshman Biology classes had the opportunity to work with fourth graders from Empire Elementary in Carson City. Students learned about conservation, the water cycle, and the Carson River watershed. CHS students, trained by the River Wranglers conservation group, and on a very windy day, met up with Empire Elementary students at Baily Pond.

The Senior Celebration held Thursday at the Casino Fandango Ballroom in Carson City went off without a hitch with festivities including raffles, a cake walk, live entertainment, medical screenings and more.

A 32-year-old woman was arrested early Monday for suspicion of burglary after admitting that she broke into a residence to steal prescription drugs, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

The weather is changing at Carson High School and so are the types of clothing some students are wearing. CHS Dean Sharon Hallinan sent an email out to all CHS teachers about this weather changing challenge. Hallinan told teachers to “please remind students of the Dress Code; highlight the fact that bare midriffs and holey jeans, which violate the ‘Fingertip Rule’, are not allowed.”

CARSON CITY – Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation (AADF), a Carson City-based nonprofit that honors U.S. military veterans with free Dream Flights, is adding a re-stored 1943 Stearman biplane to its fleet, thanks to the fundraising efforts of a local community in Wisconsin.

There's a host of activities Friday and, looking ahead, a bevy of fun Saturday including a Mother's Day craft fair at the Carson City Community Center, a Star Wars themed bicycle safety day, a wine, cheese and dessert ride aboard the V&T, an early opening of the downtown farmer's market, the May Downtown Carson City Wine Walk, a memorial walk, presentations, comedy, live music and more. Oh what a difference the sunshine makes. The second day of May in Carson City will bring warming temperatures with a daytime high in the low 70s. The event lineup Thursday includes a law enforcement memorial at the capitol complex, a hike at Clear Creek, art showings, a lecture on the historic Transcontinental Railroad, live music and more. Join us on our free leader-led hikes each week to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Meet at the Highway 50 Park and Ride where we will carpool or caravan to the starting point off of Golf Course Road. Water and sturdy closed-toe shoes required. Hat, sunscreen and hiking poles recommended.

Bring a friend and/or friendly dogs. All hikes are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500’ or more.
