Schulz Ranch Park is nearly complete, and its history tells a story of Carson City ranching
Finishing touches are being done on Schulz Ranch Park, located on the south side of Carson City in the newly created subdivision at the east end of Topsy Lane.
The Schulz Ranch Park is so named because once upon a time, the area was a massive ranch owned by the Schulz family, along with Henry Dangberg of the Minden Dangberg Ranch family, who sold his holdings in the area to the state for what is now the Nevada Correctional Center.
The area, which later would be named Carson City, turned to ranching in the mid 1880s, and soon an agricultural hub in the West exploded.
Barley, potatoes, wheat, oats and all manner of fruits blossomed from the valleys, along with cattle, horses, and pigs. Later, sheep and goats arrived to munch down the valley grass, and three dairies opened to supply the newly formed town with milk.
Some of the major ranches in town were owned by names familiar to us now as street names. Curry, Proctor, Winnie, Anderson, Lompa and more were all some of the founding ranches in the area, providing food and supplies to not only townsfolk but also those who were passing through on their way to California to seek gold.
Now, Schulz Ranch Park has been named so in dedication to the land it now resides on, surrounded by suburban houses priced at around $400,000.
Schulz Ranch Park, at the corner of Racetrack and Wheeler Peak, should be finished with construction on the playground equipment and landscaping shortly.
Be advised: the sloping of the grassy hill leads to an extremely wet walk across the grass, so stay on the cement walkways until drainage can be properly figured out and save yourself from the destruction of a pair of nice sandals.
