While there may not be fireworks this Fourth of July, there are still many activities in Carson City and beyond!

Hello to everyone in Carson City. My name is Destiny Hernandez, and I am a senior at Carson High School. Just like all of the other seniors here at the school, I am working on my Senior Project, a graduation requirement, in order to benefit not only myself but also those animals in the community who need a home.

Heading into Tuesday, the capital city will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Carson City Mint with events throughout the day. Other activities include a morning and evening walk hosted by Muscle Powered, a dinner fundraiser for the Roman family at Pizza Factory, a community dinner and meeting invite to the Order of Eastern Star, a showing at the BAC of the 1941 film classic "The Lady Eve" and a concert featuring the Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus with violin soloist Elizabeth Pitcairn at Shepherd-Sierra Lutheran Church. Heading into the Super Bowl weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the monthly downtown Carson City wine walk, plus karaoke at Bella Vita Bistro and Y-NOT Saloon. The Forest Service begins its first “Ski With a Ranger” at Lake Tahoe’s Heavenly Mountain Resort on Friday. Combined with championship football festivities on Sunday, the Silver State is in store for a wild, good time.

Stellar violin soloist Elizabeth Pitcairn joins TOCCATA, the Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus for the 10th year, performing one of the finest and most popular gems in the concerto repertoire. Ms. Pitcairn plays Mendelssohn's beloved "Violin Concerto" on the legendary 1720 "Red Mendelssohn" Stradivarius.

Clouds will roll into the capital city region Tuesday keeping temperatures quite chilly. Happenings around town include organized morning and evening fitness walks, a "Stuff the Bus Toy Drive" at Capital Ford, a Planning Commission meeting on the proposed Andersen Ranch development and a Posada event at Mark Twain Elementary. Plus, the Carson City School Orchestra Program will hold its annual Holiday Concert at the community center, The Peanuts Gang Trio will hold a free holiday concert at Sassafras, and more.

The Orchestra Program of Carson City School District is holding its Holiday Concert Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Just the idea of a concert in Carson City is exciting enough, but it gets even better because this musical event will cost audiences absolutely nothing except a little time and effort getting there. Admission is free.

Writing this on Wednesday, Sept. 18, the morning temperature reading was 37 degrees and Tuesday it was 35 degrees. If the cold nights didn’t alert me that fall is near, my flowers and trees would. Leaves are turning yellow on the neighborhood poplars and ash trees. Some maples are already changing to autumn oranges and reds.

Silver City, Nevada - An Engineering/Robotics Mini-Camp for kids ages 8-14 and their parents takes place on Tuesday, August 6 from 10am – noon at the Silver City School House (community center) at 385 High Street, Silver City, Nevada 89428. The public can start or grow its own mineral collection by attending the Geology Club’s third annual Gem and Mineral Sale that runs from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Bristlecone Building lobby. Plan to come early for the best selection.

SILVER CITY, Nev. — A free Clinical Somatics class for adults will be offered at the Silver City School House at 385 High Street on Tuesday, August 7 from 10 to 11 a.m.

Parents and their children ages 8-12 are invited to a fun class combining science and crafts on Tuesday, July 10 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with instructor Jim Barcellos of University Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE).

SILVER CITY, Nev. — Jim Barcellos of University Nevada Cooperative Extension will offer science fun on both July 3 and July 10 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Silver City School House community center. The activities are free and all children ages 8-12 and their parents are welcome to the free events. Parents are asked to stay and join in the fun and help with clean up.

Cortney Bloomer of Healthy Communities Coalition will offer a free bike safety rodeo for kids ages 5-12 on Tuesday, June 26 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Silver City basketball court, next to the town park and community center at 385 High Street.

Visit the club at the next free monthly meeting on the last Monday, June 25 at 7 p.m.

As snow continues to fall in the Sierra, the Business Association Chamber Collaborative, a sub-committee of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association is proud to announce the creation of the “Touch Lake Tahoe Secrets” interactive online map. The purpose of the interactive map and its components is to encourage those who visit North Lake Tahoe during the winter months to make their way down to the lake and patronize the many businesses that call the lakeshore home.

Well, Congress did it again. They waited until the end of the year and then passed a big bill that literally had everything, including the kitchen sink, in it. We are all still reading through the thousands of pages and discovering hidden gems.

The historic mountain town of Virginia City, Nev. was born from the Comstock Lode, a discovery of silver ore so rich it has never been surpassed. To honor this mining heritage, the town celebrates with Muckfest: Mining, Whiskey & Cigars, June 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Delta parking lot in the heart of town.

Virginia City, Genoa and Incline Village on the shores of Lake Tahoe have been selected among Nevada's 10 most unique towns in the online publication the culturetrip.com.

Noting Nevada is the seventh largest state by area, the website describes the Silver State comes with a "great deal of open space, varying landscapes, and many small towns dotting the terrain." The CultureTrip.com website has previously featured Carson City and Virginia City area landmarks, museums and restaurants as unique or must-see stops for travelers.

A day after sweeping three games at the Great Western Shootout, Western Nevada College concluded its best performance at the Yuma, Ariz., softball tournament with another victory on Saturday.

Kelsie Callahan smashed a two-run homer and Makaylee Jaussi hit a solo homer as the Wildcats defeated Golden West College of Huntington Beach, Calif., 7-4. It was a program-best fourth victory of the tournament for WNC.
Earlier on Saturday, Yavapai College of Prescott, Ariz., avoided losing to the Wildcats for a third straight time, extinguishing a final-inning rally for a 6-4 victory.
