The Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

Event Date:
January 15, 2018 (All day)

As Oprah ponders a run for the Presidency as a Democrat, she might pause and reflect on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today honoring a great Republican. Dr. King chose to be a registered Republican because he knew, as does anyone who knows civil rights history, that the Democrats were the party of; slavery, the KKK, Jim Crow, and builders of Confederate war memorial monuments honoring slave owners.

Ten steps to cure the Obamacare crises

Government Obamacare: answer or problem?

Our socialist healthcare system is predictably out of control with rising costs, lowered services and inevitable bankruptcy for our nation. To solve the artificially created shortages of affordable health care we need to repeal Obamacare (hopefully before it kills too many people) and then we need to restore market incentives to lower the cost of health care using the following ten steps:

I: Eliminate Taxes and deregulate American health care.

II: Increase grants and loans to create more health care doctors and workers.

American history provides enough examples of petulant third parties handing electoral victory to the wrong candidate. Teddybear Roosevelt's ego gave us Woodrow Wilson. Ross PeeRot gave us Bubba Clinton (and therefore, Hillary???).

An unsung hero of Carson City

Event Date:
December 25, 2015 (All day)

This is a picture of an unsung hero of Carson City, though few know of him. No, it's not really Santa under a rainbow but it is a picture of a simple hard working business owner who, like countless other business owners, makes this city work as part of the free enterprise system. This man is out before dawn cleaning and preparing the property where he runs his business and is still at work long after dark every day throughout the year.

Optimists and Many Nevadans Continue Tax Fight with Cynical State Politicians

Event Date:
October 28, 2015 - 9:15am

If we share a weakness, it’s our perpetual optimism.

As free-market economists, we often reflect on the amazing achievements of the past 300 years, and doing so, grow sanguine about what people can accomplish when free to create, innovate, produce and exchange with each other mostly free of government interference.

These recent articles are a faithful representations of the Party Line. Of course that party line is dead wrong, but at least the writer does a good job presenting it.

The Common Core Way: civics lesson masquerading as mathematics

A recent bruhaha over Common Core math was triggered by an examples from the THIRD grade, in Washoe county, in which a “math” lesson and a “math” problem was centered on full length study of the “Rights of Man” from the French revolution, “Universal Declaration on Human Rights,” and the children’s version, both from the UN. The only excuse for any math in this lengthy lesson was that at one point they asked how much it would cost to do a project to illustrate something in these documents.

Letter: Eagle Valley ‘nay’ vote not part of an agenda

Editor: Correction to Mr. Duane Heiny letter where he states that perhaps my nay vote against the Eagle Valley Golf Course had been influenced by the long-running effort spear headed by owners of the other two golf courses in Carson City to close Eagle Valley, and that they are both building contractors. This is absolutely not true.

The reason I voted against the lease is simple. The Board, as the governing body of Carson City, must always make sure that the public can bid on all city projects. I believe it is mandatory and I stated so at the Board meeting.

Letter: Dividing the Pie

As a matter of law, the Nevada state constitution requires a balanced budget. As a matter of economic law and history, raising taxes will never balance a budget. It never has and never will. If a budget cannot be balanced without tax increases, it will never be balanced afterwards. The reason is simple, raising taxes decreases tax revenues and strangles growth. Many Nevada taxpayers believe that our legislators seek to redistribute our tax dollars to buy votes or political power rather than serve the public good.
