Carson City Symphony presents "On the Jazzy Side" Feb. 28

The Carson City Symphony, conducted by David Bugli, will be joined by jazz singer Madeline Eastman for "On the Jazzy Side," a concert on Sunday, Feb. 28.

"Fresh, arresting and electric" are the words that have been used to describe our featured guest soloist Madeline Eastman who has long been heralded for her vocal gifts, interpretive savvy, and irrepressible sense of adventure while performing her bold interpretations of The Great American Songbook.

Let the music play: Carson City picked for BAC summer Levitt Amp concert grant

The Brewery Arts Center in Carson City has been awarded a grant to bring a 10-week live music series to Carson City during the summer of 2016.

Sponsored by Levitt Pavilions, the national nonprofit that is behind the largest free concert series in America, the Brewery Arts Center learned Tuesday it is one of the 15 grant winners who competed in 2015 for Levitt AMP summer concert series funding.

Sunday, Dec. 6: Things to do around Carson City

Happy Sunday. There’s still plenty of weekend left. Craft fairs at Carson Lanes and the Carson Colony are sure to have something for that hard to buy for person on your list. Fight the chill with chili at the Carson Bulldog Wrestling Club’s Chili Cook-off at Yogurt Beach. Sing some holiday songs at the Holiday Karaoke Sing-along Party at the Carson City Library. Dayton lights up its tree tonight at ‘Our Park,’ so dress in your ugliest sweater and enjoy some hot chocolate and cookies at their ‘Small Town Christmas’ celebration.

Have you been naughty or nice this year? You’ll have no problem finding Jolly Old St. Nick this weekend. At Debug Computers where, in exchange for a donation to Holiday with a Hero, you can get a photo with the man in red. The Santa Train at the Nevada State Railroad Museum is a good place to grab a candy cane, some hot cocoa, and tell him what you’d like to find under the tree. Photographs with Santa are available at the Carson Mall Wednesday through Sunday. Genoa’s annual Breakfast with Santa has three seatings beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Carson City is one of 40 cities around the Nation bidding for a $25,000 award for a free summer music series. We are currently in 17th place and the Levitt Amp music series will be giving away 15 awards of $25,000 each.

The top 25 cities with the most votes will be eligible for the grant but the higher up you are on the list, the better chance you have for the cash award. The award is a matching grant with a total budget of $50,000.

The concerts will be regional artists and national touring bands along with a festival style local artist event, all free of charge and will take place on the Brewery Arts Center campus.

Sunday is always ideal for relaxing: comfy pajamas, turkey leftovers, and setting up decorations around the house are all good ideas. The football season is in full swing and you’ll find the game on just about everywhere. You have one last chance to catch the Nutcracker this year, so head to the Community Center this afternoon. Grab the whole family for a free concert at the United Methodist Church. Holiday favorites sung by women’s choir ‘Bella Voce’ will get you in the spirit.

Don’t miss the Christmas Kick-off at Evergreen Gene’s, complete with a visit from Santa. Carson Valley Inn hosts its annual Kandy Kane Holiday Craft Fair. You will also find great Nevada items in our Museum Gift Shops and at the Chamber of Commerce’s Artisan Gallery.

Carson City Symphony presents 'Shifting Landscapes' at community center theater

Happy birthday, America! Today we celebrate our independence, and what better way than with a carnival. You might as well stay at Mills Park all day, the fireworks display starts when it gets dark. Tune into Magic 95.5FM and you’ll hear the choreographed music to go along with the oohs and aaahs. Where ever you choose to watch fireworks, please be safe. There are thousands of visitors in the Northern Nevada area this weekend, and law enforcement will be out in full force.

Happy Tuesday, Carson City. And happy Bloomsday to the James Joyce aficionados out there. June is National Soul Food Month, so my suggestion for today is a trip to Sassafras for some New Orleans inspired grub and a great free concert. Songwriter Bryan Hayes will be in house for one night to help promote his new album ‘Farther Down the Line.’ Check out the Official Video for his new Single ‘I Wanna Run.’ The song was written in Mosul, Iraq, and one of Bryan's soldiers, SGT Zach Tucker, is featured in the video.

Carson Valley Pops tunes up for a spirited Fourth of July

The Carson Valley Pops Orchestra is bringing back their traditional July Fourth Concert in the Park. Set for 11:30 a.m. at Heritage Park in Gardnerville, right after the Gardnerville Fun Run, this free concert is an ideal way for families to celebrate the Fourth in an old fashioned, small town setting. Bring your picinic and a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the patriotic line up of traditional July Fourth tunes.

Grounds open and pre-concert entertainment by the Regency Strings strolling duo (Cecilia Twain, violin, and George Worth, bass) begins at 2 p.m. The Naughty Tea Mistresses will be there, too!

First things first. Saturday afternoon could be expecting some wet weather, so be prepared. I can’t predict what events may be affected by it, or if the rain will even show up. No worries for you wine walkers, though, downtown will be hopping: rain, shine, or blizzard. Head over to Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery and wish them a happy fourth anniversary, Jeffery will be serving up one of his signature Sangrias. St. Peter’s Episcopal Church won best wine walk stop last month and will have live music. Don’t forget to spend some time inside Westside Pour House: ARTistically INKlined pop-up gallery returns and proves that tattoo artists are first, and foremost, artists.

It’s a good weekend for the arts. Consort Canzona presents a free concert on Sunday: “Madrigals and Dances: A Celebration of Renaissance Music.” The ‘Music Man’ wraps up its successful run at the Community Center. The Capital City Community Band performs old favorites at Western Nevada College. And you won’t want to miss the Zephyrus Brass Quintet on the Dangberg Ranch lawn.

Bundle up, Carson City. We aren’t afraid of a little wind, are we? The Dangberg Home Historic Ranch is celebrating our infamous Washoe Zephyr this weekend with kite making, demonstrations, and more. The Friends of the Silver Saddle Ranch would love to see you at their open house on Saturday; if you’re an early riser, join them on a 7 a.m. bird walk. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is hosting their annual Cops and Kids Open House, so head to the courthouse for some fun.

Take a ride on the McKeen Motor Car at the Nevada State Railroad Museum or the Ferris Wheel at RSVP’s Spring Fair and Carnival. A Harmonica and Strings Concert at Empire Elementary School showcases what some of our talented students can do. Get up early and head over to the Carson City Airport if your youngster has any interest in planes: Young Eagles flights are happening today if the weather permits.
