Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada announces 24th annual Luau

Returning for a 24th year is the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada (BGCWN) Luau auction and barbecue to be held Saturday, Sept. 9 from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Multipurpose Athletic Center (MAC) and the BGCWN main campus on Russell Way in Carson City.

Many of our readers have probably not heard of Warrick Dunn, former running back for Florida State University and the National Football League’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons.

Dunn had a great college career, winning a national championship with the Seminoles in 1993. He followed his college success with a very good twelve-year career in the NFL. He made the Pro Bowl three times, although his successes were overshadowed by the likes of Shaun Alexander, Adrian Peterson, and Corey Dillon.

Fire agencies respond to brush fire on Highway 50 at Spooner on the valley side

UPDATE 2:45PM: Both westbound lanes now open at Highway 50 Spooner from the valley side. The Spooner fire has been extinguished. The cause is under investigation.

UPDATE 1:50PM: As firefighters were being released from the fire on Spooner, Carson City fire department was called to a fully involved vehicle fire in the area of Golf Club Drive and Sierra Highlands on the valley side of Highway 50 and Spooner.

RENO, Nev. — Sarah Hunt never enjoyed the girlie lifestyle. She begrudgingly wore feminine clothes at McQueen High. At Nevada, Hunt played Division 1 softball and soccer where she was more comfortable around campus wearing gender-neutral athletic sweats and sportswear as opposed to dresses and high heels.

Carson High's Future Health Professionals to represent Nevada at international conference

Carson High School Career and Technology Education Health Occupation Student Association Future Health Professionals, a career and technical student organization, is sending 29 students to the HOSA International Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla., June 20-25. The students will represent CHS, as well as the Carson City community and the state of Nevada in various medical competitions.

Oakland Raiders Coaching Staff Visits Boys and Girls Club, Conducts Battle Born Football Clinic

Mike Tice, offensive line coach for the Oakland Raiders football team has been an avid supporter of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada, donating new athletic shoes, sponsored by Under Armour to Carson Valley Club members each year.

Embracing the area's manufacturing community, the Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] announces its exhibition, "Industrial Art: Sports Edition", at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery from June 9 – September 28, 2017. CCAI will host a reception for the show on Friday, June 9, 5-7pm including a short introduction of the exhibition participants at 5:30pm. Thousands crowded the Carson High football stadium Saturday morning to watch more than 500 graduating seniors receive their diplomas as the Class of 2017 made its official transition out of grade school and into the world of adulthood.

Every year, Ormsby County Education Association and the Carson City School District sponsor “The Light of Education” awards, and this year’s CHS winners are Ann Britt, Johanna Davis, and first year teacher Monica Chavez who said, “I felt very shocked, honored, and blessed about winning the award.”

David Elwyn Johnson: April 23, 1952 – May 6, 2017

David Elwyn Johnson passed away on Saturday May 6th after a long battle with cancer. He loved music, especially jazz, and was fortunate to make music his career as a skilled piano tuner and kindhearted piano teacher. David touched the lives of many as he brought excellence to his profession. He shared his musical talent by playing trombone for many years with the Carson City Symphony.

South Lake Tahoe man suspected of embezzling from Pop Warner Football

UPDATE 2:34PM: KRNV News 4 in Reno is reporting that Klug has turned himself in to the South Lake Tahoe Police on Friday after an arrest warrant had been issued in connection to embezzlement charges filed against him.

Senator Square: New Star Wars club at Carson High School

Just when things could not get any better, the Star Wars Club, initiated by CHS students, hit light speed at CHS. To date, CHS Advisor, physics, astronomy, heliophysics coordinator, and head freshman football coach Jim Bean said the club has had two meetings so far.

American Century Championship at Lake Tahoe to welcome NFL first time competitors

With the end of the school year drawing nigh, The Carson City School District is pleased to announce it meets or exceeds the minimum number of minutes taught per day and in turn will not be required to make up student days lost due to weather or uncontrollable circumstances.
