Sports legends, celebrities sign on for 26th American Century Championship at Lake Tahoe

There’s one place where NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB rivalries meet annually to settle old scores. The venue: Lake Tahoe. The event: The American Century Championship. At stake: a share in the $625,000 prize purse. The scene: Six days of fist bumps, high fives, autograph signing, photos with fans, laughs galore and some great golf.

A blockbuster lineup of sports legends, all-stars, Olympians and hall of famers plus Hollywood celebrities of film and television will go tee to green July 14-19 at the 26th American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Club.

Bundle up, Carson City. We aren’t afraid of a little wind, are we? The Dangberg Home Historic Ranch is celebrating our infamous Washoe Zephyr this weekend with kite making, demonstrations, and more. The Friends of the Silver Saddle Ranch would love to see you at their open house on Saturday; if you’re an early riser, join them on a 7 a.m. bird walk. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is hosting their annual Cops and Kids Open House, so head to the courthouse for some fun.

Seating available for FISH fundraiser Saturday at Glen Eagles

Have a Heart Celebration, a fundraiser for Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, has seats available for dinner Saturday in which local officials and dignitaries serve as waiters.

New Project in Lyon and Mineral counties planned to help bi-state sage grouse

In a continuing effort to help increase the population of Bi-State sage grouse, the Nevada Department of Wildlife is partnering with the U.S. Forest Service to address major threats to the population within an area located in Lyon and Mineral counties.

The 12th annual Carson City Sheriff's Office "Cops and Kids" Open House, billed as the "Safest Street Party in Carson City," will be this Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the sheriff's office, 911 East Musser Street.

The free community event features, activities, ID kits for children, food, music, games and more. On hand will be the sheriff's office K9 dogs, motorcycle patrol unit, Special Enforcement Team, stellar squad, a new SWAT unit, representatives from DARE, and the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Nevada wildlife officials seeks input for big game quota setting

The Nevada Department of Wildlife urges sportsmen and other interested parties to become involved in the big game quota setting process by providing their input at the upcoming Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners meeting in Reno this Friday and Saturday.

Forest Service targets invasive plants at Lake Tahoe with herbicide treatments

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will continue a project to eradicate, control, and contain known infestations of invasive plants in the Lake Tahoe Basin using chemical treatment. Work will occur at approximately 70 infestation sites beginning May 15 and continuing through September 2015.

Have you picked your pony yet? The Kentucky Derby is today, but that is far from the only thing running today. Chili on the Comstock is hosting their inaugural Fun with the Runs 5K Saturday at 10 a.m. The 1926 Edwards Motor Car is running, too, and ready for rides at the Nevada Railroad Museum. The wine walk is always a good time, and with Mother’s Day next weekend, it can’t hurt to peruse the shops before you run out of time to pick the perfect gift.

    Now that the California 2015 fishing season is open (complete with fresh snow), this is a reminder that if you are planning to fish in the Golden State, be advised you will need the current license and any necessary stamps.
    You can purchase that license and applicable stamps at a number of local outlets or on the Internet.
    If you do need to buy a license and stamps, here is some info:

    Annual Non-Resident Licenses:
    The 2015 non-resident annual fishing license is $126.36, and it is good through December 31, 2015.

    Lake Tahoe Roadside Boat Inspection stations open for the season

    Roadside stations for inspections and decontaminations of motorized boats and watercraft entering Lake Tahoe are officially opening for the 2015 boating season beginning May 1, the Tahoe Resource Conservation District announced Thursday.

    This is my annual reminder that it’s almost time to have fun fishing in the Golden State once again. On Saturday, April 25 the 2015 fishing season will open for all applicable lakes, reservoirs, streams, creeks and rivers in the State of California.

    That season will then remain open until Saturday, Nov. 15. If you’re new to this area, here’s some information that can be useful if you would like to fish on that Opening Day or for the entire Opening Weekend:

    Hello fellow anglers, I am counting the days to the California opening fishing season. On April 25, 2015 most of California lakes, streams and rivers will open for fishing. Always check your regulation book for every body of water you fish. Regulations can change and some waters do not open until later in the season.

    Outdoors with Don Q: Lake and river outlook is grim for the rest of the year

    We are into the first part of the month of April, winter is behind us, and the outlook is grim for the rest of the year due to our prolonged drought. Here are some things that are currently occurring and will probably occur:

    Snow: Our Sierra Nevada snowpack is either non-existent or minimal at best. There are very few snowdrifts across higher elevation hiking trails. Deep snowfields and snowdrifts in the mountains are things of the past. The peaks are bare rather than smooth white with lots of snow.
