Suspect allegedly kills mother in early morning Gardnerville shooting
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 10/13/2015 - 2:25pmA 27-year-old man allegedly shot his mother dead during a domestic dispute early Tuesday morning at a Gardnerville home, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
The investigation has identified the suspect as Jarek Kozlowski, 27. The victim, Michelle Kozlowski, was found fatally shot in the street near the Manhattan Way home.

UPDATE: A woman was found fatally shot early this morning on a street in Gardnerville. The suspect in the shooting is in custody after he was also shot and was taken to the hospital, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies responded to 1200 block of Manhattan Way for reported domestic violence call with shots fired. At approximately 1:24 am, Douglas County deputies responded to the residence on Manhattan Way.
Two people die when plane crashes into South Lake Tahoe home

BLM firewood permits available at multiple locations

Pinyon pine and Utah Juniper permits are $10 a cord. People may purchase up to ten cords before a commercial firewood cutting permit is required. Only dead trees — standing or down — may be cut.

Embers, often concealed in what appears to be cold ashes, can remain hot enough to kindle a fire for several days. It is recommended to wait at least 96 hours and/or 4 days before disposing ashes.
To safely dispose of ashes:
• Put discarded ashes in a heavy metal container, douse with water, and cover with fitted metal lid.

I’m a native Oregonian, born and raised just an hour or two north of Roseburg. My parents called this mill city, situated between the North and South branches of the Umpqua River, home for a few years a decade back. I know the area fairly well. One of my favorite places to visit was Wildlife Safari just a few miles down the road in Winston.

Carson City firefighters train, encourage homeowners to clear defensible space
Submitted by editor on Thu, 10/01/2015 - 8:57amIn a training exercise Wednesday, seasonal firefighters joined with recruits and veteran firefighters from the Carson City Fire Department to practice extinguishing wildfire and discouraging its spread.
“By training, we can hone our skills. We work together more efficiently,” said Rodd Rummel, wildland fuels management officer. “Even for seasoned veterans, training is always key to efficient and effective work.”
Crews spent the day at a north Carson home practicing different maneuvers, such as creating defensible space, thinning brush and extending the fire hose.

The competition was held just a few weeks ago at Purina Farms, near St. Louis, MO. The second place team is from Gardnerville and the Grand Champion is from Elko! Only the top dogs out of 15,000 registered were eligible to compete. Ginger also holds a Flyball Master title. I rescued her 4 years ago from the Carson City shelter, where she had been returned twice.
CCAI Industrial Art at the Library

The show, previously at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery, will be available at the Library through November 19.
The Library will host a public reception for Industrial Art on Friday, October 2, 3:30-5pm in honor of Manufacturer's Month [October]. The Library’s MT1 training room and the Digitorium will also feature students’ manufacturing activities during the open house event.

The bonfire will be supervised by Carson High staff, Carson City sheriff’s Deputy Jessica Dickey and the Carson City Fire Department. Smoke will be visible in the area. The event begins around 6:30 p.m.
The fire department will notify dispatch when the bonfire begins and ends.

Carson City firefighters get control of house fire on West Long Street
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 09/21/2015 - 5:13pmUPDATE 5:53PM: A fire caused major damage to a West Long Street home on Monday afternoon burning into the attic, interior and exterior of the home, said Carson City Fire Chief Robert Schreihans. No one was injured.
The blaze produced flames outside the home that were fueled by winds that ignited nearby trees and shrubs, forcing the evacuation of two nearby homes. The neighboring homes were not damaged.
Firefighters were able to get a handle on the blaze within 15 minutes, said Schreihans.
Firefighting done, Guard helicopters return to Nevada
