Gusty winds prompt Red Flag Warning for much of Western Nevada
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 06/16/2014 - 9:00amA Red Flag Warning has been issued from noon to 8 p.m. Monday for much of western Nevada, according to the National Weather Service. Low pressure over the Pacific northwest will bring gusty winds and dry conditions to Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties Monday.
Winds will gust to 30 to 40 mph. These winds along with low humidity will create critical fire weather conditions for parts of western Nevada, mainly south of I-80.
Dead-tree firewood cutting begins Monday, live-tree July 21
Submitted by editor on Thu, 06/12/2014 - 11:11amThe Carson Ranger District, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, will open dead-tree firewood cutting areas beginning Monday, June 16, 2014. Dead-tree cutting areas include Hope Valley, Thornburg Canyon, and Leviathan.
Live-tree cutting areas will open on July 21, 2014; live-tree cutting areas include Beagle in the Dog Valley area, Scotts Lake, south of Woodfords, Calif., and Jones Creek off Mt. Rose Highway.
In the live-tree cutting areas, only designated trees may be cut and slash must be piled. Designated trees are described on the live-tree cutting area maps.
Fish in Nevada without a license this Saturday

Nevada Free Fishing Day is Saturday, June 14. On Free Fishing Day anglers may fish in any public fishing water in the state without a fishing license or trout stamp. All limits and other regulations apply.

Public safety column: Cigarettes flicked from car windows are a fire hazard
Submitted by editor on Sat, 06/07/2014 - 7:06pmSummer has arrived in Carson City and with it comes dry conditions which, if we are not careful, can lead to brush and forest fires. If you smoke while driving, tossing a lit cigarette out the car window could prove expensive in more ways than one.
The cost to fight a fire caused by carelessness can be in the thousands and even millions of dollars and the fine for throwing a lit cigarette from a vehicle is $1,000.
CareFlight called to motorcycle crash north of Carson City

Carson City Fire Department and the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District were called as first responders.
Carson City firefighters douse fence fire near home

The fire was reported at around 1:30 p.m. and was quickly doused before it could spread into an adjacent open field that leads to the Carson City Freeway. The fire may have been caused by compost from a pile that combusted. No one was injured.

New driver training offered in Carson City, Douglas County through WNC

Each session includes four days of instruction, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cost: $100. Carson City Classes also include four hours of driving simulator time.
Summer courses will meet on the WNC Carson City Campus Mondays-Thursdays, June 23-26, July 7-10, July 21-24 and August 4-7.
TRPA takes tree removal permitting process online

“The new online service is more customer friendly and is in line with the Agency’s core values of improving operational efficiency while providing a high-level of customer service,” said TRPA Executive Director, Joanne S. Marchetta.
One dead in plane crash at Dayton Valley Airpark
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 06/03/2014 - 2:45pmOne person has died in a plane crash this afternoon at Dayton Valley Airpark, a Central Lyon County Fire Protection District official said.
The crash happened near Dayton Valley Golf Club. The first call came into Lyon County dispatchers at 2:16 p.m. Responders include Lyon County Sheriff's Office and the fire department. Care Flight was also called.
Red Flag Warning Issued; Firefighters Prepare
Submitted by editor on Mon, 06/02/2014 - 5:08amThe National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Red Flag Warning for Monday. That warning indicates a high fire danger on the western Nevada Sierra front, including Carson City.
An upper level disturbance will move across the region today. This will bring isolated thunderstorms this afternoon initially along the Sierra Front and far northwest Nevada with activity moving quickly to the east across the basin and range during the evening. Some of these thunderstorms may produce dry lightning.
Fire restrictions begin Friday in Western Nevada

Below-average precipitation this winter and spring and a third consecutive year of drought have led to abnormally low soil-and-fuel moistures, increasing the potential for large and potentially devastating wildfires, the agencies announced.

Carson City Memorial Day service today at Lone Mountain Cemetery

Organizers said the Sons of Veterans of the Civil War will fire a cannon during the ceremony as part of Nevada’s Sesquicentennial, the 150th anniversary of Nevada’s admission to the Union.
Among the speakers at the ceremony will be Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell and retired Navy Capt. David Treinen.
Department of Corrections building in Carson City evacuated after suspicious mail found
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 05/21/2014 - 12:21pmInvestigators evacuated a building off of the Stewart Complex in the 5000 block of Snyder Avenue in Carson City Wednesday after a suspicious envelope or package with white powder was mailed to the facility.
The two story Building 17 is used by the Nevada Department of Corrections. Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi said the fire department and law officers were called to the complex at around 10:50 a.m.
The package envelope was being tested to make sure there isn't a lethal substance inside, said Giomi.

Carson City firefighters respond to structure fire off Neptune Court
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 05/19/2014 - 5:03pmCarson City firefighters responded early Monday evening to a working structure fire near the 2700 block of Highway 50 East off of Neptune Court and Carmine Street.
The occupant of the residence and two dogs escaped injury but the fire burned much of the manufactured home and there was partial roof collapse, said Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi. A third dog was reported missing.

Rain and high elevation snow expected with approaching weather system

The storm will bring increasing chances of showers and thunderstorms to the region with moderate to heavy rainfall, according to the National Weather Service. The heaviest showers may develop over Nevada, which would lead to higher precipitation totals than the Sierra.
Carson City firefighters called to structure fire on North Carson Street

Smoke and flames were visible when firefighters arrived at the mobile home park. All occupants were able to get out of the mobile home though one was reported to be injured. An ambulance was called to the scene.
Sierra Front: Forest fire west of Reno growing
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sun, 05/18/2014 - 2:57pmUPDATE: A wildfire west of Reno near Caughlin Ranch in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest has burned about 150 acres and is 5 percent contained as of Sunday night, according to. Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. No homes are threatened at this time.
The Hunter Falls Fire may have started overnight Saturday and began to spread Sunday morning. Two helicopters dumped buckets of water on the fire and the Black Mountain Hotshots were at the scene by Sunday afternoon, said Sierra Front spokeswoman Elizabeth Kenna. Gusty winds fanned the fire. The cause has not been determined.
Child suffers minor injuries in bicycle crash with vehicle at 5th and Roop
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 05/16/2014 - 2:38pmA 10-year-old on a bicycle suffered minor injuries after an accident at 5th and Roop Street, according to Carson City fire and ambulance crews on scene. The accident was reported at 3:20 p.m. A Care Flight air ambulance was not needed.
Carson City Fire Department responds to two separate vehicle rollovers overnight

One person was taken by Care Flight in a crash that happened early Thursday morning, while the other person escaped serious injury. Both rollovers may have been alcohol related.
The Thursday morning rollover was in the southbound lane of the Carson City I-580 freeway near the Highway 50 exit.
