Carson City Symphony to perform 'The Eight Seasons' concert March 1 at community center

This exciting program features eight seasons: "The Four Seasons" by Antonio Vivaldi and "The Four Seasons in Buenos Aires" by Astor Piazzolla. Both are directed by David Bugli and feature guest violin soloist Stephanie Sant'Ambrogio and narrator Rita Geil. STRAZZ youth strings will join the orchestra in Vivaldi's Autumn and Winter.

UNR professor's Monster Fish work featured in National Geographic exhibit

It opens March 26 at National Geographic’s Washington, D.C. headquarters and runs through Oct. 12, 2015.

Clan garments featured in 'Second Skin' exhibit at Nevada Arts Council’s OXS Gallery, reception Feb. 18

The Reno artist featured in the latest show at the Office eXhibition Series Gallery works in fabrics that explore group identity, belonging and symbols, in garments sometimes called clan jackets.
The attire is said to communicate meaning, cultural legacies and myths. The OXS exhibit “Second Skin” is free at the Nevada Arts Council, 716 N. Carson St., in Carson City, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through April 17. Lillegard will discuss her work at a public reception from 5-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, with an artist talk at 6:15.
Reno’s Riverfront Nixon Mansion Reduced to $16.4 Million

(Feb. 2, 2015) – Reno’s historic Nixon Mansion, which went on the market last summer for $20.4 million, was reduced to $16.4 million this month. The estate is listed by Chase International and takes its name from its original owner, Nevada Senator George S. Nixon. The prestigious Italian Villa estate was built in 1907 and sits on 2.03 acres on the Truckee River, originally had 33 rooms, and was one of the first residences in Reno to have an elevator.
USAF Band tickets for March 4 show sold out

A line formed outside the Carson City Chamber of Commerce at around 7:30 a.m. for the free tickets to the USAF Concert Band that will play in Carson City March 4.

CHS Announces Winterfest Royalty

This year's candidates have come from all walks of life, but as it would appear they have come out on top of the student body. The king candidates are: Jake Jones, Seamus Burns, Brandon Allen, Daniel Cihigoyenetche and Brady Rivera. Colby Brown was also elected a king candidate as well, but had to withdraw due to prior commitments during the week.
USAF Band of Washington, D.C. to perform in Carson City

Giant guitar greets Lake Tahoe visitors at new Hard Rock casino in Stateline

Nor does one normally see a huge crane lifting a metal guitar over 100 feet to be placed onto a base in front of a South Shore casino.
Douglas High Graduate Terrence Martin and his team, Todd Schulze and Courtney Cardenas, were busy installing the guitar last week. Many people were passing by, stopping to ask the metal artist questions and taking photos of what will soon be the talk of the town and the subject of many photos.

Assemblyman O'Neill hosts Common Core curriculum forum Tuesday in Carson City

Citizens for Sound Academic Standards welcomes the public to participate in the program which it says it will present both sides of the issue. The Common Core State Standards Initiative is an educational initiative in the United States that details what K-12 students should know in English language arts and mathematics at the end of each grade.
Nevada's new temporary license plates designed to stop counterfeiting

“Our new dealer placards are web-based and computer generated,” said DMV Director Troy Dillard. “The new tag can be quickly verified by law enforcement and has both overt and covert security features that will make it harder to counterfeit or tamper with these tags.”
More trails, terrain open at Northstar, halfpipe slated for Friday

Located on Pipeline trail and accessible via Vista Express, the halfpipe is a popular and highly-anticipated feature among Northstar’s terrain park users. Its addition allows for a contiguous, uninterrupted terrain park descent from the top of Pinball Park, which currently offers guests access to 46 features, into the Pipeline Park, which hosts the halfpipe.
Will she make it? 'Idol' features Carson City singer

The Carson City singer knows if she made it through the early auditions for the 2015 season of the "American Idol" television singing competition, but the rest of us have to tune in to the upcoming audition episodes of the program to find out what happened.
So far, Seals, 22, can tell people that she made it through the Reno tryouts in July and moved onto the Kansas City auditions in August.

He has written several business books, one of which was selected as best business book of the year by Library Journal, but “Death in Nostalgia City” is his first mystery novel.
Artisan Showcase at Carson City Chamber now open
Submitted by editor on Fri, 12/26/2014 - 12:18pmWhen the Carson City Chamber purchased the share of the building previously occupied by the visitors bureau, they found themselves with extra space that once housed the visitor center and gift shop operated by the bureau.
What to do with that extra space was the question. Since that vacant space was always operated as a gift shop, the Chamber decided to operate an artisan shop to showcase local talented artists and provide them with yet another outlet to sell their unique art.

UNR seeks donors for Lake Tahoe fire camera system
Submitted by editor on Mon, 12/08/2014 - 10:15amThe success of the pilot program for fire cameras at Lake Tahoe has prompted the University of Nevada, Reno’s Nevada Seismological Laboratory to pursue funding to build out its fire camera network that rings the majestic mile-high lake.
“We’ve seen the system avert potentially large fires this summer at Tahoe, even with its minimal presence,” Graham Kent, director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory, said of the prototype system with its four cameras. “It makes sense to build this system out now to help protect the basin from devastating fires.”
