South Lake Tahoe police officer, wife killed in vehicle crash near Sand Mountain

UPDATE: The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly single-vehicle rollover that occurred shortly after 5 p.m. on Saturday night that took the life of South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Mark Hounsell, his wife Jeanne and one other person.

Woman shot dead in Gardnerville, suspect in custody after exchanging gunfire with deputies

UPDATE 2:25PM: Douglas County authorities have identified Michelle Kozlowski as the Gardnerville woman fatally shot during a domestic dispute involving her 27-year-old son, Jarek Kozlowski. Go here for the latest developments to this story.

UPDATE: A woman was found fatally shot early this morning on a street in Gardnerville. The suspect in the shooting is in custody after he was also shot and was taken to the hospital, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to 1200 block of Manhattan Way for reported domestic violence call with shots fired. At approximately 1:24 am, Douglas County deputies responded to the residence on Manhattan Way.

Vehicle crashes in Carson City up 20 percent, driver inattention largely to blame

Driver inattentiveness, speeding and cell phone use are factors for around 20 percent more vehicle crashes along Carson City area roads this year compared to the first seven months of 2014, a Carson City Sheriff’s Office sergeant said this week.

Not counting those crashes investigated by the Nevada Highway Patrol, there’s been 250-plus crashes from January to July of this year. During the first seven months of 2014, there were 200 crashes, said Carson City Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Scott McDaniel.

Report: Three of five traffic fatalities in Carson City were motorcycle related

Reckless driving on roadways led to an increase in traffic fatalities during 2014 compared to the previous year, according to Nevada Department of Public Safety figures released Monday.

In Carson City there were five fatalities in 2013, and in 2014, there were also five fatalities, according to figures compiled for the Nevada Department of Transportation. What's noteworthy is that in 2013, no fatalities involving motorcycles were reported, while in 2014, three of the five fatalities in Carson City were on motorcycles, said NDOT spokeswoman Meg Ragonese.

Carson City Sheriff's Office targets impaired drivers, crosswalk violators in December

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office along with other law enforcement agencies throughout Nevada are participating in Joining Forces through December with the task of stopping impaired motorists.

Grant money for this event is provided by the Nevada Department of Public Safety-Office of Traffic Safety. These monies are used to pay for additional deputies who will be out looking for impaired drivers, said Sgt. Scott McDaniel of the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

Carson City public safety agencies stage shooting scenario exercise

The first of two “active assailant response” exercises was staged Saturday at the Carson City Courthouse. The scenario involved two shooters in camouflage who walked through the three story courthouse, shooting city employees and members of the public in their path as they went courtroom to courtroom.

The shooters were taken out with gunfire by Department of Alternative Sentencing officers and Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies within two minutes of the scenario, but not after leaving a bloody path of fatally and critically injured victims.

Strap on the belts: Nevada law enforcement 'Click it or Ticket' campaign underway

Nevada’s Joining Forces multi-county law enforcement program is launching its “Click it or Ticket” education effort alongside the nationwide effort to encourage motorists to strap on their seat belts.

Between Nov. 13 and Dec. 2, law enforcement officers will fan out across Nevada in search of motorists who are not buckled up. Although seat belt use is not a primary offense in Nevada, seat belts are proven to be a primary factor in decreasing fatalities in a crash.

NHP awarded grant for its 'Joining Forces' campaign

The Department of Public Safety-Office of Traffic Safety has awarded The Nevada Highway Patrol-Northern Command West $129,500 in federal funds as part of a grant for the “Joining Forces” campaign.

The goal of this grant is to reduce fatalities and serious injuries suffered by motorists involved in traffic collisions. “Joining Forces” is a federally-funded grant geared toward having state, county, and local law enforcement agencies “Join Forces” in an effort to enforce key areas of traffic safety.

NHP: Traffic violations, accidents down during Street Vibrations motorcycle rally

The 2014 annual Street Vibrations motorcycle officially came to a close on Sunday Sept. 28. Organizers expected between 50,000 and 100,000 participants.
