Monday, Aug. 22: Things to do in Carson City

Time to hit the books, Carson City, the new school year begins today. Keep an eye out for kids on bikes and in crosswalks all over town, and please drive safely. Mondays are usually quiet in our valley, but you’ll find the High Sierra Swing Dance Club jazzing it up at El Charro Avita. Head up to Gold Hill for a tour of their haunted hotel and stick around for drinks or dinner. Have some family fun at Carson Lanes: games are only $1 all day.

Wildland Firefighter Foundation Fundraiser at Red's Old 395

Join us at Reds Old 395 Grill Friday, July 29 from 4pm-8pm. The Wildland Firefighter Foundation and Red's Old 395 Grill will be hosting a fundraiser with family fun and Smokey Bear.

Compassion spreads like wildfire. Show off your beard with a wild beard contest with a $10 entry fee. 100% of all raffle tickets, cash donations and beard contest entries will go directly to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation. Bureau of Land Management - Nevada will also be out with Smokey Bear educating the public about the dangers of forest fires.

Northern Nevada Family Fun Day at Mills Park

Families unite at Mills Park in Carson City on Saturday, August 27 for Northern Nevada Family Fun Day.
This event features live music, workshop, shopping, raffles, a Kids Zone, giveaways, raffles and more. There will be rock climbing demonstrations, face painting, pirates, music, a photo booth, ice cream, refreshments and more.

Funday begins at 11 a.m. and runs to 9 p.m.

The event is a fundraiser for Faith Hope Love Northern Nevada.

Celebration of Basques at Nevada State Museum family fun program Oct. 10

Basque language, food, music and play for the whole family are all part of a very special event at the Nevada State Museum, Carson City from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 10.

The monthly Family Fun Saturdays series gets kids involved in many aspects of the museum, from Nevada history to cultural and nature studies. October’s event features Xabier Irujo, co-director at the Center for Basque Studies at UNR, his five young children and several special guests who will entertain and share culture and heritage.

This last weekend of August is filled with ways to celebrate your community. Carson Animal Shelter Initiative, better known as CASI, hosts their annual Bark, Whine, and Dine Fundraiser at Fuji Park. Animal lovers can also head to Carson Catalina Apartments for a rummage sale that benefits the Carson Tahoe SPCA. The Carson City Sheriff's Office young Explorers will host a fundraising car wash; The Marine Corp League can be found at the north Carson Walmart; half of the donations received will go to Deputy Howell’s family fund. And don’t miss out on the drought-friendly water balloon ice bucket challenge raising funds for ALS at Butler Meats on Sunday.

Hold on to your hats, Carson City, summer isn’t ready to quit us just yet. An aviation air show at the Minden Airport, the coin show and fair at the Nevada State Museum, and a fishing derby for the kids at Little Washoe Lake are only the tip of the iceberg. The Pavilion at Mills Park is where you’ll find the annual Carson High Football Boosters Fundraising BBQ. The Quicksilver Dog Agility Trials are always fun to watch, and they’ll be at Fuji Park all weekend. Carson Lanes has family fun indoors and out all day long during their Bowling Blast-off.
