I am a third-generation Carsonite. I remember this city in the 60’s and 70’s. Recently, a gentleman told me this is a senior community, a thought shared by many.

Virginia Street, Reno, NV, 89502, CRCS, a local canine recovery center, is revealing their plans to build a campus in Northern Nevada. The event titled “Fall for CRCS” is the launch of a 4 year long campaign to raise $1,000,000.00 to complete the purchase and renovations to a 5.2 acre parcel and 12,000 sq ft of interior space that CRCS calls home. There are currently no programs of its kind in Nevada.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit plans to restore wetlands and remove the dam at the site of the former Incline Lake, according to a decision by Forest Supervisor Nancy Gibson issued Wednesday.

Climate change is hurting reproduction of the endangered Devils Hole pupfish, threatening the survival of this rare species that has numbered as few as 35 individuals, new research by the University of Nevada, Reno and Desert Research Institute shows.

Scientists report that geothermal water on a small shelf near the surface of an isolated cavern in the Nevada desert where the pupfish live is heating up as a result of climate change and is likely to continue heating to dangerous levels.

Visitors to the Lake Tahoe Summit on Tuesday, August 19 will notice new gateway signs along three Nevada highways leading into the Lake Tahoe Watershed. Installed near Daggett Summit on Nevada State Route 207, Spooner Summit on U.S. Highway 50 and on Nevada State Route 431 the Mount Rose Highway, the decorative gateway signs read, “Entering the Lake Tahoe Watershed — Help Protect It!”

The environment you are surrounded by at work can lift you up, propel you forward, pull you down, or trigger feelings of being stuck. In some organizational cultures, a cycle perpetuates itself that is very similar to abuse. What do you do if your organization is stuck in such a cycle? You get therapy.

As a leader, there are a few ways you can do this without pulling in an outside facilitator. Although, if things have gotten to the point where the needle can’t move with internal efforts alone, a facilitator may be necessary.

Lowering a white disk off a boat and into Lake Tahoe’s blue waters was once the most widely used indicator of the lake’s clarity and health. Today, the Secchi disk is still an important tool, but 46 years after the University of California, Davis, first began continuous monitoring of Lake Tahoe, an array of new technologies and computer models are helping scientists better understand what has proven to be a complex ecosystem.

New high definition fire cameras are scanning the mountains and shoreline, while University of Nevada, Reno researchers are discovering new animal species at the bottom of Lake Tahoe and working with colleagues at the Desert Research Institute to document the dramatic decline of other bottom dwelling species and nearshore water quality.

Managing water in northern Nevada’s Truckee-Carson River System requires local communities to balance urban, agricultural and ecosystem needs. Changes in historical climate trends are increasingly expected to make this balancing act more challenging. A competitive grant totaling $3.8 million has been awarded to the University of Nevada, Reno and the Desert Research Institute in partnership with the U.S.

The League to Save Lake Tahoe hosted a Stewards of Stormwater event Thursday, Aug. 7 in Incline Village in partnership with Tahoe Family Solutions’ Camp Explore program, IVGID, the Nevada Tahoe Conservation District, and Washoe County, Nevada.

More than 50 kids from Tahoe Family Solutions along with other volunteers helped place 41 metal markers on storm drains that lead to Lake Tahoe and picked up 40 pounds of litter on the streets.

With cuts made to the program because of the sequester, Head Start in Nevada will receive a $2.5 million boost after the Department of Health and Human Services announced Thursday it will receive a grant.

The $2,559,327 grant is designed to expand projects in Nevada and will be funded through the University of Nevada Reno, said Sen. Harry Reid.

The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday passed Nevada Congressman Mark Amodei’s bill known as Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe – Fish Springs Ranch Settlement Act, by a bipartisan voice vote.

The bill, H.R. 3716, would ratify an agreement between the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe and Fish Springs Ranch to resolve a dispute over water rights near Reno. It is expected to be passed by the Senate and signed into law.

Youth Theatre Carson City is thrilled to announce our upcoming production of SEUSSICAL, JR., an exciting adventure through the world of Dr. Seuss. The show will run two weekends, July 25 – August 3, 2014 in the Bob Boldrick Theatre at the Carson City Community Center. SEUSSICAL, JR. is great fun for the whole family. Over 70 young local performers portray all the characters from the popular Dr. Seuss books in this fantastical musical extravaganza.

An ancient forest of mature pine trees, standing upright under 100 feet of water in a small lake in the Lake Tahoe Basin, helps scientists as they study how changing climate can affect mountain environments and the communities in them. The trees, discovered and studied by a University of Nevada, Reno, researcher, are remnants of a 200-year-long medieval drought.

The site is a stop on one of the field trips of a four-day international conference on mountain observatories held at the University of Nevada, Reno July 16-19.

The Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health will offer a Safe Sleep awareness event Wednesday, July 16 from 10 to noon at the Smith’s Food & Drug Store at 750 South Meadows Parkway, Reno.

The event hopes to draw new mothers and help them in the prevention of No. 1 cause of infant death between the ages of one month and one year. A Safe Sleep bus provided by the Regional Transportation Commission will be on site, as well as Safe Sleep and injury prevention materials from DPBH and Cribs for Kids of Safe Kids Washoe County.

There will be free parking and beach access Saturday to Sand Harbor, Cave Rock and Spooner Lake state parks for those who support Lake Tahoe with the purchase of license plates.

“Buying a Tahoe license plate is one of the easiest ways to help the Lake,” said Tahoe Fund CEO Amy Berry. “Thanks to Nevada State Parks, we are able to show our appreciation to Tahoe plate holders with a free day at the beach or park.”

Lucas McNamara, 7, was hiking around Griff Creek near Kings Beach Fire Station last week with his family when he saw a black, spiny fish, about 1-foot-long, lying dead in the creek. He ran up the creek bed, yelling, “Dad, you need to look at the big crazy fish!”

Lucas’ parents, Steve and Jen McNamara, decided to make this a teachable moment for their son, who already shows active interest in science and the environment.

“I told Lucas that this fish is not normal for Lake Tahoe and may be harmful to the other fish and animals in the lake,” Steve said.

The Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada have picked the Carson Station Hotel Casino in Carson City as its spotlight business of the month. This means for the entire month of July, General Manager Bruce Jabbour and his staff and their customers will be collecting money for a donation to the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada.

Carson Now focuses on local news, but for eight days next spring, we will expand our view all the way to China.

In cooperation with the Carson City Chamber of Commerce, I will be embarking on a tour of China with a group of Carson City residents and businesspeople on April 7-15, 2015.

Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center in Carson City has been recognized by Soliant Health, one of the largest healthcare staffing companies in the country, as the 5th Most Beautiful Hospital in the United States.

The initial hospitals were nominated and then a record setting number of 248,116 votes were tallied to determine the winners.

The Tahoe Fund has partnered with Nevada State Parks to offer free access July 12 to Sand Harbor, Cave Rock and Spooner Lake to current owners of Lake Tahoe license plates. The event is designed as a gesture of appreciation to those who support Lake Tahoe with the purchase of license plates.

“We are thankful to the thousands of people who choose to buy and renew their Tahoe license plates,” said Jay Howard of Nevada State Parks. “Our Lake Tahoe parks benefit greatly from those funds, with beach improvements, watershed restoration work, and new hiking trails.”
