Sonia Carlson to speak, demonstrate calligraphy at Legislative Building March 19

Gardnerville artist Sonia Carlson hosts a free Chinese Calligraphy workshop at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19 as part of the Nevada Arts Council’s “Work of Artists” series at the Nevada Legislative Building in Carson City.

The event runs until 5 p.m. in Room 3100. All “Work of Artists” presentations are free and open to the public.
Growing up in Zhangzhou, China, Carlson learned calligraphy in school and folk dances from her family.

Agencies seek public input on Lake Tahoe pedestrian network

Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, in its capacity as the Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization, is asking people to take an online survey and provide public input needed to create a connected, accessible, and safe bicycle and pedestrian network at Lake Tahoe.

The survey is being offered through June 30. It is available here and takes about 15 minutes to complete.

Carson City Sheriff's Office to provide safe venue on Saturdays for buyers, sellers

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Volunteers in Police Service unit will begin offering a safe venue for the public to carry out private party sales transactions, beginning March 21, 2015. Volunteers will be on-hand at the Sheriff’s Office, 911 East Musser Street, on Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to provide a safe environment for private party sales.

‘Gardening in Nevada’ classes discuss GMOs and vegetables

Gardening in Nevada can be challenging. Before digging in this spring, you can get some free advice from the experts – University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and their Certified Master Gardeners.

Cooperative Extension has teamed up with Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space to offer “Gardening in Nevada: The Bartley Ranch Series.” Classes are free and run 6 – 8 p.m. every Tuesday in March at Bartley Ranch Regional Park, 6000 Bartley Ranch Road in Reno.

The Magic of Masks with Michelle Lassaline, at Legislature Feb. 24

Carson City native Michelle Lassaline is featured in a special SENarts event at the Nevada Legislature from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24. Lassaline invites the public to meet and interact with some of her fanciful characters, including the Highland Cow, Pashmina Goat, Mountain Bluebird, and Wild Burro. Her presentation is part of “The Work of Artists,” a series of programs scheduled throughout the legislative session. Admission is free.

Tahoe Fund expands board of directors

The Tahoe Fund announced Monday the election of Kevin Marshall, Pete Sonntag and Julie Motamedi Teel to its board of directors. The three new members each bring a strong commitment and love of the Lake to their positions.

They are charged with helping the organization expand its impact by growing support of environmental improvement projects that will restore and enhance the Tahoe environment.

UNR professor's Monster Fish work featured in National Geographic exhibit

A new National Geographic Museum exhibition, Monster Fish: In Search of the Last River Giants, features the work of the University of Nevada, Reno’s research professor and host of the television show Monster Fish, Zeb Hogan. It opens March 26 at National Geographic’s Washington, D.C. headquarters and runs through Oct. 12, 2015.

Some of Northern Nevada's finest traditional, folk and contemporary artists will appear at the 2015 Nevada State Legislature in “The Work of Artists,” a series of interactive talks and demonstrations that bring a personal side to exhibited pieces. Designed to create an opportunity for artists to engage with community members and people working in or visiting the Nevada State Legislative Building, the presentations are at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 18 and 24, March 19 and 30, April 17 and May 7. All are free and open to the public in Room 3100.

Carson ATA Martial Arts Kids’ Safety and Success Seminar set for Saturday

Carson ATA Martial Arts - Karate for Kids is providing a free community Kids’ Safety and Success seminar followed by a pizza party this Saturday, Feb. 7.

The event, starting at 10am at Carson ATA Martial Arts, will cover topics such as stranger and abduction safety, bullying prevention, and online and home safety. There will be a hands-on segment to teach safety and bulling prevention techniques. Participants will also work on goal setting for school, home and activities, responsibility for school work and chores, creating proactive habits and how to follow through on goals.

'The Vagina Monologues' at BAC to raise money for Advocates to End Domestic Violence

It’s a journey of self-discovery, empowerment, abuse, and self-questioning staged to benefit a local charity that houses, counsels, and works on the front lines to protect victims of abuse in Carson City.

TRPA to host September invasive species conference for Western states

Top experts will converge at Lake Tahoe in September for the annual meeting of the Western Regional Panel on Aquatic Nuisance Species, hosted by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.

Taking place Sept. 2-4, the annual meeting brings together officials from across the country in the fight against western expansion of aquatic invasive species. Participants will learn from informative lectures and discussions to foster coordination of aquatic invasive species management among western states. This event is open to the public.

Carson Conquers Douglas In Wrestling Duel

The Carson High School Wrestling team made their way just south to Douglas High School for a Sierra League duel. The Carson Senators were coming into a tough Douglas environment as the Tigers are hosting their Winterfest week this week as well. The place was packed and the action was never seemed to really slow down in this match up.

Cooperative Extension: Plants sensitive to touch without the touchy-feely

Thigmomorphogenesis – When I first saw this word, I thought it was a joke; but no, it’s a real response of plants to touch. I’m not referring to the “touchy-feely” idea of hugging or caressing plants.

Think instead of the active trapping mechanism of carnivorous plants or of the leaf response of the “sensitive plant” (Mimosa species). Some vine tendrils coil up when touched. However, thigmomorphogenesis refers to “more long-term changes in the appearance of a plant (‘-morpho-‘) in response to repeated touch (“thigmo-“) (Chalker-Scott, Washington State University).
