The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival has buddied up with something new this year. Today and tomorrow, the Jukebox International Film Festival features fifteen contestants competing in four categories. Youth Theater Carson City and Western Nevada Musical Theater alum, Grant Davis, is back in town to show support for ‘Something Like Summer,’ the Australian musical he stars in. Make sure you’re in McFadden Plaza around 5 p.m. Davis will be performing songs from the movie and music from his debut album on the Third Street Stage.

Youth Theatre Carson City to hold auditions Saturday for Singin’ in the Rain, Jr.

Youth Theatre Carson City is thrilled to announce auditions for Singin’ in the Rain, Jr. The show will run eight performances, January 12-21, 2017 in the Bob Boldrick Theatre at the Carson City Community Center.

Hot sun, low humidity and drying winds create a hospitable environment for tiny pests called spider mites.

With eight legs, these arachnids are related to spiders and scorpions.

UNR faculty receive $500,000 grant from U.S. Department of Defense for mosquito research

University of Nevada, Reno entomologist Andrew Nuss and biologist Dennis Mathew are looking for a way to stop the spread of mosquito-borne disease. The goal of their research is to identify key mosquito odorant receptors that govern mosquito host-preference for humans and to genetically modify those genes in order to create mosquito strains that avoid biting humans.

The Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] announces its student exhibition, "ART from UNR", at the Community Development Building [the Brick], 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. The Brick is open to the public daily, 8am – noon, 1-4pm. The free exhibition will remain in the building’s lobby exhibition space from July 11 through October 19.

Carson City School District improving space, energy efficiency for new school year

A number of projects are on the agenda this year for the Carson City School District, not the least of which is a district-wide refit with energy-efficient improvements designed to give substantial annual savings back to the community over the next two decades, CCSD Operations Director Mark Korinek said.

Reception, talk features Nevada environmental artists

Nevada artists Paul Ford and Dennis Hinton, whose “Environmental Perspective” exhibit has been displayed at the Nevada Arts Council’s OXS Gallery since June, will take part in an artists’ reception and talk on Tuesday, Aug. 8.

At a public workshop on June 20, 2017, the City Manager expressed the opinion that Carson City would be relinquishing control of its fate to the Reno City Council if it elects to prohibit the sale of recreational marijuana within its borders and that the cost of dealing with marijuana consumption within our jurisdiction (because of its availability in Washoe County) cannot be adequately offset without the ability to collect taxes on new retail pot sales.
