Pair sentenced to prison maximum time in Memorial Day weekend robbery of elderly WWII vet

The pair who robbed an elderly Carson City World War II veteran over Memorial Day weekend earlier this year have been sentenced to prison.

Robert "Robbie" Hernandez, 28, and Jordan Burkhart, 24, were each sentenced Tuesday in Carson City District Court to six years to 15 years each for robbery against a person over the age of 60, and an additional six years to 20 years for perpetrating the crimes on a person older than 60 years of age.

Passenger dies in two vehicle crash on Highway 95 near Tonopah

An elderly woman died in a two vehicle crash Wednesday morning on Highway 95 in Esmeralda County, a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper said. Three others sustained non-life threatening injuries.

The crash investigation details learned so far indicate a 2006 white Dodge Caravan was traveling northbound on U.S. 95 when for unknown reasons at this time the driver, a 60-year-old Tonopah man, who had two other passengers, drifted off the right shoulder and over corrected, said Trooper Dave Gibson.

Woman arrested on suspicion of fourth DUI

A Carson City woman with three prior DUI convictions was jailed Sunday on a felony charge of driving under the influence after after an incident at a grocery store parking lot, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Cynthia Bess Reilly, 58, is being held on $20,000 bail. According to the arrest report, officers responded to the area of Carson Street and Winnie Lane at 2:12 p.m. to look for the suspected driver and then went to the 4200 block of Mulligan Drive, the address of the registered owner.

The Carson Colony in Carson City invites everyone to its 31st Annual La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow during Nevada Day Weekend.

Witness the Grand Entry at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1; or 12 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2. The event is held in the Carson Colony Gym, 2900 South Curry Street.

Man jailed on felony hit and run charge after crash injures elderly driver

A 20-year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday on suspicion of felony hit and run causing injuries to a 75-year-old driver, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Christopher Gene Keep was jailed with a $40,000 bail. According to the arrest report, officers were sent to Jeanell Drive to look for a gray Dodge Durango involved in a hit and run where the driver allegedly pulled out in front of another vehicle causing the accident and then fleeing the scene.

District Attorney presents DAWG program to Carson City Board of Supervisors

At the Aug. 28 meeting of the Carson City Board Supervisors, the District Attorney’s Office presented its newest component to its Victim Witness Services unit.

DAWG, which is an acronym for District Attorney Witness Guide, was introduced by District Attorney Neil A. Rombardo, along with Subaru, a 2-year-old Labrador retriever.

NHP: Elderly woman dies in rollover on Highway 50 and East Nye Lane

An elderly woman died in Saturday morning's fatal single vehicle rollover at Highway 50 East and Nye Lane in Carson City, a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper said. The driver of the vehicle, an adult man, was taken to the hospital with injuries. His condition is unknown at this time.

A Carson City firefighters have responded to an accident near the intersection of Highway 50 East and Nye Lane, where a small white SUV hit a drainage ditch and flipped several times.

One of two involved in the robbery of a 101-year-old Carson City World War II veteran will go before a jury while the other will be sentenced for the crime late next month.

Elderly Gardnerville woman dies in Interstate 580 crash

UPDATE: A Gardnerville woman died Monday in a single vehicle crash in the southbound lane on Interstate 580 two miles north of Bowers Mansion in Washoe County, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Dorothy S. Hunter, 95, died at the scene of the accident, reported at 2:34 p.m. Hunter was driving a 2007 Silver KIA Rio, said Trooper Dave Gibson.

Weather Service issues Heat Advisory for Carson City region

UPDATE: The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory through Monday for Carson City, Dayton and much of Western Nevada.

Strong high pressure over Nevada will bring mostly sunny and very hot conditions through early this evening. Areas in western Nevada will reach triple digits with many areas in the Sierra reaching the upper 80's to low 90's. Anticipated highs for Dayton are 103 today, and 102 for Carson City, and near 100 in Carson Valley, according to the weather service.

Carson City Sheriff's Office crime report

A 65-year-old man was arrested Wednesday on a felony charge of burglary after attempting to take more than $400 in merchandise from Walmart on Market Street in Carson City.

Darrel Wayne Fisher, a homeless man, also faces lessor charges of petit larceny and obstructing, according to a Carson City sheriff's deputy.

Officers were dispatched to the store at around 8:15 p.m. and met with Loss Prevention who observed the man leaving the store through the west door with a shopping basket of merchandise. He was confronted outside the store and taken inside.

Carson City Sheriff's Office: 3 defrauded of several hundred dollars in NV Energy phone scam

At least five residents have filed reports with the Carson City Sheriff's Office in the past two days after a telephone scam that involved so-called NV Energy bill collectors. Of the five complaints being investigated, three residents were defrauded of several hundred dollars, a deputy said Wednesday.

Two arrested in early Sunday robbery of elderly Carson City man and caretaker

Two men are in custody Wednesday night following Sunday's armed robbery of an elderly man and caretaker inside a Canvasback Drive home, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Detectives with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office arrested Jordan Burkhart, 24, of Wellington and Robert “Robbie” Michael Hernandez, 27, of Carson CIty. Burkhart was arrested at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office without incident on a probation violation, said Furlong. Following the arrest, the search continued for Hernandez and ended in the Reno/Sparks area. Bail was set at $250,000 each.

Carson City sheriff's deputies arrest couple on domestic battery, obstructing charges

A 20-year-old Carson City man was arrested Tuesday in the 2000 block of West College Parkway on suspicion of domestic battery, resisting a police officer and marijuana possession, according to a Carson City sheriff's deputy.

Officers were dispatched to a motel in the 2700 block of South Carson Street at 7:43 p.m. on a report of domestic battery. Officers were told a woman was bleeding profusely from her face and that a man told her to get into a car. The woman complied and the vehicle left the scene.

Carson City sheriff's deputies arrest pair who allegedly stole purse from elderly woman

Two men each face felony strong armed robbery charges after they allegedly grabbed a purse Friday afternoon from an elderly woman in downtown Carson City.

Jeremy Wilson, 29, and Kevin Wrzensinski, 27, were arrested at motel room at the corner of Plaza and 8th Street within about 15 minutes of the robbery, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

The men, who told investigators they are brothers, each have arrest warrants from outside the area and are not believed to be locals.

City Staff and the 1/8 cent Tax Scam

I am adamantly opposed to the 1/8 cent tax increase to fund proposed city projects. I resent the efforts of city staff to “bundle” these projects, falsely represent them as necessary, and, by omission, deceive voters as to the true costs of these efforts. While at the work shop on January 21st, no one could tell me where the tax budget shortfall was for these projects, and there was no clearly demonstrable need.

For several years, Elaine and I have fled Carson City for a short time in the month of January or February to escape the cold, snow and ice of our area in the wintertime. This year was no exception, except, sadly, there is no snow.

An 88-year-old Minden man accused of shooting his wife at a Carson City hospital on Sunday told the arresting officer that he put four bullets in a handgun with the intent of killing the woman and himself, saying she had recently become paralyzed in an accident.

State urges Carson City, Douglas County valley residents not to burn due to poor air quality

The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection is asking people in the Eagle and Carson Valleys to refrain from burning wood this week during a period of stagnant air. Where wood is the only option, people should burn as cleanly as possible.

Strong temperature inversions and stagnant weather conditions can cause air pollution levels to increase rapidly in the valleys of Carson City and Douglas County.

Carson City firefighters knock down late night mobile home fire

Carson City firefighters were called to a structure fire late Tuesday night at a Tiger Drive mobile home park in which a unit burned leaving a family homeless.

The residence had significant smoke and structural damage inside. The fire was brought under control at 12:16 a.m., Wednesday morning and fully extinguished at 1:22 a.m. No injuries were reported.

Witnesses said the family returned from work to find the home filled with smoke that appeared to come from the floor area in the front part of the unit. Family members grabbed what they could and evacuated.

Wanted fugitive convicted in 1976 murder of Carson City child found in Las Vegas

A man wanted as a fugitive after being convicted in 1976 of second degree murder of a child in Carson City has been arrested, the Nevada Division of Parole and Probation reports.

Wanted fugitive Eric William Zessman, 59, was arrested in Las Vegas. Zessman was convicted of the second degree murder of a child in Carson City in 1976. He was first paroled in 1981, and in each of his six parole releases since that date he became a fugitive or committed new crimes.

Carson City woman jailed after allegedly beating elderly woman, kidnapping child

A 23-year-old Carson City woman faces three felony charges, including attempted kidnapping and battery after she allegedly beat an elderly woman and then grabbed a 5-year-old girl from a courtyard, carrying her until witnesses were able to free the child.

Laura Elizabeth Rees-Dauer, is being held on $100,500 bail. The incident happened Saturday, Oct. 19 in the area of 20 College Parkway in Carson City. The arrest was made at 4:59 p.m.

Care Flight called after two-vehicle crash at College Parkway and Lompa

An elderly couple were taken to the hospital, one via Care Flight, following a two-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon at the intersection of College Parkway and Lompa Lane in Carson City.

The passenger of the sedan, an elderly man, was flown by Care Flight. The driver the vehicle, a woman, was taken by ground ambulance, said Carson City Sheriff's Sgt. Darrin Sloan.

The driver of the other vehicle, also a sedan, was not seriously injured. The accident was reported at 2:44 p.m.
