As the weather warms, so does heat dished up this weekend with all the right spices at the 33rd annual Chili on the Comstock in Virginia City.

Nothing will rain on our parade, Carson City. In addition to the monthly wine walk, the weekend offers a carnival, train rides, the Kentucky Derby, Mother’s Day and more. Tonight, Western Nevada Musical Theater Company debuts their spring musical ‘42nd Street.’ Find improv at the Brewery Arts Center or Comedy at the Carson Nugget. Drinking with Clowns hits the stage at Sassafras and Motown is on the menu at Living the Good Life. Food with friends is in order at Silver City’s Community Dinner Night or at A to Zen’s first ‘Fancy Friday’ open mic night.

Entries are open now for the second annual Lake Tahoe WordWave One-Act Play Competition. “WordWave, A Festival of Story at Lake Tahoe,” will return Oct. 21-23 to the Tallac Historic Site in South Lake Tahoe, Calif. Winners of the play competition receive a $500 cash prize and the chance to see their work directed and produced as a staged reading on the historic Boathouse Theatre stage.

The final event of the Senior Project happens April 18 and Carson High School reserves the entire school day to these momentous, rigorous, relevant, and result driven speeches. The excitement at CHS is intense as these seniors dress for the occasion, dawning everything from professional business attire to scrubs depending on the nature of their projects. Though college and career are just around the corner, a feeling of anticipation, excitement, and soon-to-be graduation flows through the air at CHS.

After that cold snap earlier this week, it’s time to go enjoy the sunshine. Spend the afternoon cheering on the WNC Wildcats as they take on Salt Lake Community College. You’ll find the softball double-header at Livermore Sports Complex off Edmonds; baseball is played at the Harvey Field at Western Nevada College. Fort Churchill State Historic Park is offering a variety of ranger-led programs during the month of April to highlight the area’s rich history and abundant natural resources.

Built in 1861 to provide protection for early settlers, Fort Churchill was once an active U.S. Army fort. it was abandoned nine years later. Today the ruins are preserved in a state of arrested decay. A visitor center displays information and artifacts of the fort’s history.

Washoe Lake State Park is hosting a variety of events during the month of April, including a basic astronomy program focusing on year-round (circumpolar) constellations, a wildflower walk, a full moon hike and a guided hike through the sand dunes.

The Cavalry is coming to Carson City this Saturday, April 2 from 1 to 4 p.m. Nevada Day Inc. Presents, History Alive Street Theatre. Come and enjoy a "Sneak Peek" into Nevada Day Inc.'s History Alive Street Theatre Shows. The shows will be held on the first Saturday of each month during Wine Walk.

The spring thaw has arrived, and my event list is getting longer. Carson City has some fun stuff happening this weekend, so please take a look. Spring training has begun, reminding these two All-American boys how much we love baseball and especially baseball lore. Baseball, books and film make a cheesy concoction, never more so than in the 1984 movie The Natural based on the 1952 novel by Bernard Malamud.

From a visit by Ellen Hopkins, New York Times bestselling author of adult and young adult fiction, to Carson High’s own bestselling author, senior Alec Belle, CHS teachers bring national and local professionals together to share their knowledge with tomorrow’s professionals in order to equip them for the road ahead.

I’ve always loved Tuesdays and today is a good representation of what the day can offer. National Pancake Day at IHOP means a free short stack; but they are hoping you’ll donate to the Children’s Miracle Network. Jazz and Poetry take over Comma Coffee this evening; the Mile High Jazz Band can be found there every second Tuesday all year long. Get your fro-yo fix at Yogurt Beach and help raise funds for the annual Relay for Life fundraiser. A great panel of women will be at the Dayton Community Center this evening to share their experiences growing up on the Comstock.

TUESDAY:

In like a lion, out like a lamb. March has arrived, and it brings the promise of more snow for the mountains. Not today, though, so embrace the sunny spring day that we have. Put on your cowboy boots and head to Carson Lanes for some line dancing. Square dancing in Genoa is free your first time; dress casual and go do-si-do. The Performance Hall at the Brewery Arts Center is where you’ll find the Carson City Classic Cinema Club’s viewing of Meet John Doe with Gary Cooper.

TUESDAY:

Like all students of Carson High School over the past 16 years, Honors Student Tyler Warren, since his freshman year, thought about what he would be doing for his senior project, a graduation requirement for every student who hopes to receive a diploma from CHS.

Your complete list of local Friday happenings has arrived. Shake off the work week with a glass of wine and some music at Bella Fiore. If you’re in the mood for a whodunit, then the interactive murder mystery at the Douglas County Museum and Cultural Center is for you. Cheer on the Wildcats during their doubleheader against Mount Hood Community College. Edwin San Juan at Carson Comedy inside the Nugget Casino will have you in stitches.

FRIDAY:

This Friday, 39 employers will be available at the Carson City Community Center to meet with potential employees seeking a wide variety of career opportunities.

Also available will be 17 important resource companies to provide needed assistance on how to obtain training and assistance in seeking the right job.

Sunday fun includes the Carson Victory Roller’s My Bloody Valentine Scrimmage to benefit CASI and the Nevada Humane Society. Brides-to-be will want to check out the Fall in Love Bridal Festival at Genoa Lakes. Leave the kids at home for Nerdvana’s Adults Gaming Night: you must be 18 or older for this fun.

Got kids? Plenty of fun awaits. Start out at Dunkin Donuts for their Community Celebration complete with face painting and more. Love on a Leash at the Carson City Library will give them a chance to practice their reading skills with a non-judgmental furry friend. Celebrate the Asian New Year with crafts and music at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada. Take a look at the whole list for a weekend filled with activities for those young, old, and in-between.

SATURDAY:

Nevada is an important early precinct caucus state. Please come help us spread the word about Bernie Sanders and our caucus this Saturday (2/20/16) as we go do to door and talk with voters in our neighborhoods

We will offer a brief canvass training and you will be provided canvass materials to include a script, a list of voters, Bernie literature, and a walk map. Please dress in layer, wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring a bottle water.

We have provided a 6 hour window but come when you can and canvass as many shifts as you are available to do.

Carson High School Career and Technical Education agriculture program lead teacher, Charlie Mann, donned his dress, braided his beard and welcomed his Agriculture 1 students to the Hunger Games.

The Carson City students have been studying world hunger, commodities, production and trade throughout the semester, and the Hunger Games simulation gave them an opportunity to examine trade and barter with their peers while relating to popular culture.

The first community job fair of the year hosted by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce and Carson City Health and Human Services will be on Friday, Feb. 26 and will feature more than 40 employers who will be hiring for positions.

Happy 2016, Carson City. A new year has been rung in and I hope you aren’t too hung over. Get a jump on any healthy new year’s resolutions with the annual First Day Hike. You can choose between Morgan Mill on the far east side of Carson City, the dunes of Washoe Lake State Park, or some history with a short hike to the Rock Point Mill in Dayton. If you’re out and about between Carson City, Reno, Virginia City and Lake Tahoe, be sure to bundle up. Temperatures will begin to fall into the teens and remain below average, with lows in the single digits, through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

We’ve made it, Carson City! Today is the last day of 2015, so get your resolutions handy. I’ve got your usual list of all that’s going on in town, organized by start time, but I’ve grouped all of the New Year’s festivities together at the bottom. If you’re looking for a little extra luck in 2016 try wearing red underwear, having a stocked pantry before the day is done, and having cash in your hand when the clock strikes twelve.
