I Love Carson City’s Weekend Event Summary: Nov. 4 - 5

Welcome to the weekend, Carson City. Now that we are in November, thoughts turn to the holiday season. That means craft fairs. St. Paul’s Lutheran Family on Saliman welcomes you to their annual Craftique Open House. You’ll find the Young at Heart Seniors Club hosting a faire at the Douglas County Community Center. The Carson Nugget’s Sierra Room will be home to several artisans, vendors, and crafters during today’s wine walk. There’s quite a bit more, and plenty that doesn’t involve shopping, so take a look and have a great time.

The wind yesterday has blown some winter our way. The snow levels aren’t expected to reach Carson City, but stranger things have happened. November is a month filled with holiday craft shows, and it starts now. Check out what the Young at Heart Seniors Club has to offer at their annual show at the Douglas Community Center. Capital City Arts Initiative celebrates 15 years of bringing arts and culture to our valley: help them celebrate at the Adams Hub on Proctor and enjoy their silent auction featuring the works of several local artists.

Nevada State Museum hosts Day of the Dead festivities in Carson City

CARSON CITY — The Nevada State Museum and Western Nevada College Latino Cohort have teamed to present an El Día de los Muertos, or, Day of the Dead, celebration with a reception Thursday evening and a full day of activities on Saturday in downtown Carson City.

The Westside Pour House invites you to their first mid-week karaoke night, and ladies will be treated to drink specials. Caterpillar’s Hookah Lounge brings the boys of J and M Productions into the house every Wednesday for an over 18 karaoke party.

Nevada Governor Sandoval to Host Halloween Festivities at the Haunted Mansion

Gov. Brian Sandoval will host Nevada’s annual Halloween tradition of trick or treating at the Governor’s Mansion tonight, Oct. 31st beginning at 5:00 p.m. The Governor will distribute Halloween treats and this year he will participate in the Teal Pumpkin Initiative, which provides non-food items for children with food allergies.

Flag Raising Ceremony and Free Concert at Veterans Healing Camp in Silver Springs

Everywhere you look, we are ready for Halloween: skeletons and cobwebs, pumpkins and monsters, witches and headstones. Tonight is the real deal. There have been several Halloween celebrations already, but nothing beats trick-or-treat night. Get started at the Carson Mall, then head over to the Nevada Humane Society for even more candy. The Downtown Business Association welcomes the costumed kids to their Candy Crawl. But there’s nothing quite like the historic west side when it comes to Halloween.

What a weekend. Now that Nevada Day is over, we can truly focus on Halloween. Take a trip to the hospital: Carson Tahoe is throwing its annual Spooktacular Stroll, complete with candy, prizes, a bounce house, and more. Head up to Virginia City if you’d like some thrills. The Mackay Mansion is open for its second annual haunted house, even though it’s got a reputation for being haunted year-round. Douglas kids will enjoy a Halloween party at the local Minden Library.

It’s Nevada Day weekend, and that means the annual parade and festivities will bombard downtown Carson City with thousands of revelers. I made the decision to put all of the parade related events into a separate list for a few reasons: one, this list would be way too long otherwise; two, Halloween fun is plentiful all weekend long; and three, I want my list to be as easy to read as possible. Read on for events throughout Carson City, Carson Valley, Dayton, Silver and Virginia Cities.

Finally, Nevada Day weekend is here. State offices are closed, the kids are off school, and Carson City is hoppin’. Join the Downtown Business Association for the ‘Passport to Downtown’ with live music, a raffle, craft and vendor show, and a family fun center, complete with petting zoo. Stick around for the annual fall Blinky Man Costumed Nighttime Bike Ride Pub Crawl with Lights. Halloween festivities, a carnival in Mills Park, and opening night of the La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow are on today’s list, as well.

Note, there was a last-minute change in streets where the entries are supposed to line up that is different than the printed program. The change was made to accommodate some larger floats. It’s that time again. The Battle Born state celebrates its admission to the United States on the last Friday of October, with the annual Nevada Day parade on Saturday. New this year is a ‘Passport to Downtown’ event on Friday. Also new this year is the one-night-only curated art show, Capital Collage, on Friday night featuring over 20 diverse artists and organizations.

From scary to sweet, Carson City goes all out at first Boo-Nanza

With a hearty supply of costumed ones, Carson City went all out Wednesday at its first ever Boo-Nanza celebration, co-hosted by Carson City Parks and Recreation, the Carson City Library and the Carson City Aquatics Facility.

State’s Namesake Guide Dog Puppy Says Farewell at Nevada Day Race

Nevada’s namesake guide dog puppy-in-training is almost ready to return to Guide Dogs for the Blind for his formal training as a working guide. At last year’s Nevada Day Classic, a lucky puppy raiser was presented with Nevada, then only 8 weeks old.

Oh, wow, I just got a glance at the date. With the gorgeous weather planned for today, it’s hard to believe that Christmas is two months away. Let’s celebrate the holidays right in front of us first. The kids aren’t going to want to miss out on the Carson City Boo-nanza: trick or treating at the Community Center, crafts and activities at the Library, and Hotel Transylvania on the screen at the Aquatic Center. DJ Trivia is looking to expand their team of Trivia-masters: head to Red’s Old 395 tonight if you’d like to audition, or just play.

I hope you’ve got your Halloween costume ready. A week of various Halloween activities, trick-or-treats, and festivities for the kids begins tomorrow with the first ever Boo-nanza: a family-friendly collaboration between the Community Center, Carson City Library, and Aquatic Center. Tonight, the over 21 crowd gets to enjoy a costume contest at Alatte inside the Carson Nugget, with many more parties on the way.

We have arrived at my favorite week of the year. I am a great lover of all things Nevada Day, and it’s practically moments away. Luckily, we have plenty to keep us busy until Saturday. Two new art exhibits have appeared over the weekend: the annual Nevada Day Show at the Nevada Artists Association gallery, and ‘Inspirations’ at the Community Development Building, across from City Hall on Proctor.

Senator Square: Former Carson High School student returns to lead the One Up Club

Brooklyn Maw, herself a Carson High School graduate, has returned to lead the One Up Club at CHS. What does this say to the community of Carson City when a former student returns to become a positive influence at her alma mater, well it is the highest form of flattery and shows that CHS positively and lastingly impacts students’ lives.

I don’t know what is about Tuesdays in our valley, but they’re hopping. Join Parks and Recreation as they take a walk to the Kings Canyon Waterfall, one of Carson City’s not-so-hidden treasures. Enjoy the Carson High Orchestra during their Fall Concert at the Bob Boldrick Theater tonight at 7 p.m. It’s Adult Coloring Night at the Carson City Library: bring your favorite doodle book, or choose from one of theirs. Know-it-alls can strut their stuff during DJ Trivia at Fox Brewpub, or at the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint.

It’s easy to get excited about Halloween as it approaches. October is filled with pumpkin stuff, haunted houses, and plenty of parties. But here in the capital city, we have Nevada Day to anticipate, as well: a day filled with hot air balloons, parade floats, music, competitions, and plenty of Battle Born fun. While you’re waiting for the three-day weekend, go enjoy Monday. Football, swing dancing, and karaoke are all on the menu.

Nevada Women's Expo opens in Carson City

For the first time in its 16-year history, the annual Nevada Women's Expo opened in the Nevada state capital Friday night with a ribbon cutting by Carson City officials.

Leaves turning, wind blowing, and all things pumpkin sprouting up everywhere. It is absolutely autumn in Northern Nevada. Get ready for Halloween with your choice of pumpkin patches. Seeliger Elementary School is hosting theirs for the twenty-fifth year in a row. Take a trip on the V and T Steam Train at the Nevada Railroad Museum, actually take several trips. The annual Harvest Train event offers an all-day wristband that allows for as many rides as you’d like, in addition to museum admission. So many more fun activities are available to you, you’ll have to read on to see them all.

TedX has returned to the Brewery Arts Center, bringing inspiring speakers, great music, and something special to Carson City. If you can’t make it in person, you can catch it online at www.TEDxCarsonCity.com. Break a leg to the talented members of our Carson High School Theater Program – an updated version of the Greek Classic ‘Eurydice’ opens on the Bob Boldrick stage at the Community Center tonight. Bring a floaty to tonight’s Float and Flick at the Carson Valley Swim Center. Hocus Pocus is family friendly and a perfect Friday the Thirteenth film.
