Less than a week to go until Christmas, Capitol Cab in Carson City finished collecting toys for its annual Toys For Tots campaign, which began on Black Friday this year and ended this morning, said campaign organizer and taxicab driver Mark Shepler.

Saturday couldn’t have been a better day to be a kid. From Legos to locomotives, from cookies to crafts, and ice skates to canines, area children had plenty of fun activities to choose from in Carson City.

Brace yourself, Carson City. We could be in for some wet and windy weather this weekend. The more adventurous of you will be participating in the Be Bold, Run in the Cold ‘Run with Rudolph’ 5/10K near Western Nevada College. If you’d rather be indoors, the Carson Mall is hosting a Holiday Craft Fair, and at noon will celebrate the grand opening of Ogres-Holm Pottery. Celebrate a Country Christmas with Mary Kaye and the Kaye Sisters in Genoa or get your Celtic fix at the Brewery Art Center with a performance by County Clarke. Cookies with Santa takes place Saturday, Dec. 17, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Cafe at Adele’s, in what has become one of Carson City’s defining holiday events. All money and gifts collected goes to Ron Wood Family Resource Center for Toys for Tots.

The annual Dayton Christmas Tree lighting is today, Sunday, Dec. 4 beginning at 5 p.m. at Our Park. Festivities include pictures with Santa, a Civil War Christmas display, cookies and hot drinks, music, carols, an ugly sweater contest, plus if you donate a non-perishable food item, you have a chance to be the official tree lighter.

Don’t think that Sundays are just for rest, there is plenty to coax you out of your pajamas today. Take a trip with Santa at the Nevada Railroad Museum. Search for treasures and do your Christmas shopping at Fuji Park today, one of the multiple craft shows in town. This week's It's Your City with Cortney Bloomer features Ronni Hannaman, executive director of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce to discuss the Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights this Friday, Dec. 2 and several other events planned for the holidays.

The eighth annual Cookies with Santa takes place Saturday, Dec. 17 at Cafe at Adele’s in Carson City. This local tradition combines a visit and pictures with Santa, music, and cookies all for the cause of collecting toys and raising money to provide Christmas to area children in need.

The turkeys have been cooked, the dishes done, and the largest shopping weekend of the year is off and running. Show some love locally during Shop Small Business Saturday. For more than a quarter century, Carson City’s own Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights has rung in the holiday season for residents and visitors of the Nevada state capital.

With Thanksgiving just one week away, it’s hard not to get excited: food, friends, family, and a long weekend. In the meantime, stay busy with something fun to do right here in our valley. Natalie Blaver invites you to sing along with karaoke at Living the Good Life. It’s adults only for ‘round the world’ trivia night at the Carson Library with Geeks Who Drink Trivia. The colorful Nevada character, Alexander Parker Crittenden, is subject of tonight’s lecture at the Nevada State Museum. All aboard the Polar Express.

A special family-oriented craft fair will be held this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 19-20, at historic Piper’s Opera House, 12 North B St., Virginia City.

The event will feature local handmade crafts, a raffle and silent auction, as well as a DJ with holiday music, and a snack bar featuring hot dogs, chips, cookies, soda, water and juice. Admission to the craft fair is free.

I’m not trying to rush you, but the holidays season approaches. As such, the holiday craft fairs, bazaars, and bake sales have arrived. You may as well start looking at that gift list to see who would enjoy something one-of-a-kind and locally crafted. If not for gift giving, these fairs are an excellent way to find fun ways to decorate your home. Other than that, the weekend is kind of quiet, but you'll want take a look at the list and see what catches your fancy.

Wondering what to do with yourself? Take advantage of the mild weather with Muscle Powered’s easy hike along Sedge Road on the east end of town. The Salvation Army Bell Ringers will be hitting the streets soon; head over to their job fair today if you’d like to be one of them. Karaoke makes an appearance at Living the Good Life and at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar for those who need to sing. The Marine Corps League Silver State Detachment 630 is celebrating 241 years of the United States Marine Corp with a party at Westside Pour House. Keep reading for all of today’s happenings.

Friends to All is dedicated to bringing joy, cheer and friendship to senior citizens in the community during the holiday season. Since 1999 this group has been working to meet the needs of those with limited financial resources who are home bound or in care centers with little or no family nearby. Each year 150 - 200 visits are averaged in the Carson City area!

St. Peter's Episcopal Church in downtown Carson City at Telegraph and Division streets offers its annual Holiday Bazaar on Saturday November 12 from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. The bazaar features crafters who won a total of 19 ribbons at the 2015 Nevada State Fair. Raffle tickets will be on sale for "The Secret Garden," a highly imaginative appliquéd quilt with William Morris inspired floral motifs.

A month from its inaugural ride, The Polar Express is on its way to selling out with over 50 percent of tickets sold for the 2016 season. Children of all ages are welcome on a special train ride from Ely, Nev. to the North Pole on the Nevada Northern Railway's Polar Express this Christmas season. Hot chocolate and cookies are served while listening to the Polar Express story and music from the Polar Express soundtrack.

Tickets for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad’s wildly popular holiday adventure to the North Pole via The Polar Express train will go on sale starting Friday, Aug. 19 at 6 a.m.

All employers must protect their workers, their customers and themselves when it comes to illicit drug use in the workplace. Doing so will become especially crucial if Nevadans, through November’s ballot, vote to legalize the recreational sale and regulation of marijuana and related products.

The 31-year veteran teacher is retiring from the Carson City School District at the end of this week, leaving behind a legacy of unprecedented success in the CHS Culinary Arts Department.

The final event of the Senior Project happens April 18 and Carson High School reserves the entire school day to these momentous, rigorous, relevant, and result driven speeches. The excitement at CHS is intense as these seniors dress for the occasion, dawning everything from professional business attire to scrubs depending on the nature of their projects. Though college and career are just around the corner, a feeling of anticipation, excitement, and soon-to-be graduation flows through the air at CHS.

SATURDAY:

Carson High School Career and Technical Education agriculture program lead teacher, Charlie Mann, donned his dress, braided his beard and welcomed his Agriculture 1 students to the Hunger Games.

The Carson City students have been studying world hunger, commodities, production and trade throughout the semester, and the Hunger Games simulation gave them an opportunity to examine trade and barter with their peers while relating to popular culture.

She's organized a bake sale this Friday at the Boys and Girls Clubs in Carson City. The purpose of the senior project and bake sale is to spread awareness and raise money for the nonprofit organization Feeding America and its efforts to end childhood hunger and address childhood nutrition in the U.S.
