Carson City road report for May 13-19

Here is the Carson City road maintenance and construction report for the week of May 13-19.
Beginning Monday, May 13 through Friday, May 17, Lompa Lane will be closed between Highway 50 East and Menlo Drive.

Detours will be marked. In addition, the JAC bus routes 2A and 2B will be re-routed to follow the detour route and the bus stops on Lompa Lane and Menlo Drive will be temporarily closed during the road closure.

Carson City road report through May 12

Here is the Carson City road maintenance and construction report through May 12: The outside westbound lane of William Street will be closed Sunday from Carson Street to Plaza Street due to construction activity on the building adjacent to the roadway.

The northbound lane on Fairview Drive will be closed between Fifth Street and Edmonds Drive due to roadway maintenance. Detours will be marked.

There will be road work on Long Street between Roop Street and Molly Drive. No delays are expected.

There will be road work on Long Street between Roop Street and Molly Drive. No delays are expected.

There will be intermittent lane closures on Fairview Drive from Edmonds Drive to Carson Street beginning Sunday, April 28, and continuing into the week due to roadway maintenance. There will also be intermittent closures on Longview Way from Ash Canyon Road to Kings Canyon Road. Minimal delays are expected.

Reid announces more than $5 million for Virginia City, Gold Hill wastewater upgrades

Nevada Senator Harry Reid today on Earth Day announced that USDA Rural Development has approved a loan of $3,002,000 and a grant of $2,312,794 to replace the wastewater treatment plant that serves the Virginia City and Gold Hill communities in Storey County. The existing plant is past its useful life.

With spring in full swing, several road projects are underway in Carson City. Here is the road report for the week of April 22-28:

Because of continued construction of the Carson City Freeway project, Snyder Avenue is closed between E. Roland Street and Center Drive. Center Drive and Silver Sage Drive are also closed south of Appion Way. Bennett Avenue is closed between Center Drive and Bigelow Drive.

Tear Down This Fence!

The plan for making downtown more pedestrian, bike, and business friendly was presented and voted on at the Board of Supervisors meeting on the evening of April 18. It was a special session that made it more for convenient for the public to attend. The Mayor chose not to hold speakers to a time limit, giving everyone a chance to speak their mind. And that they did.  The meeting began at 6:30 PM with an overview of the project from Public Works, followed by public commentary, and didn’t wrap up with the final vote until 10:30 PM.

Act Now! For a Livable Downtown

The plan for making downtown more pedestrian, bike, and business friendly will be presented and voted on at the Board of Supervisors meeting this Thursday April 18, at 6:30 PM, in the Carson City Community Center’s Sierra Room.  Your attendance at this meeting is vital to ensure that this project moves forward!

Seats open on Carson City visitors bureau board; historic resources commission

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau Board and the Historic Resources Commission.

There is an open seat on each board. With the CCCVB, the term will run through July 2015. On the Historic Commission, the term is for four years, expiring July 2017 and is for a person professionally qualified in building construction.

Here is the Carson City road construction, maintenance and utility report through April 21. Due to continued construction of the Carson City Freeway project, Snyder Avenue is closed between E. Roland Street and Center Drive.

Center Drive and Silver Sage Drive are also closed south of Appion Way. Bennett Avenue is closed between Center Drive and Bigelow Drive. Detours will be marked.

Utility work will continue on W. Washington Street between Curry Street and Carson Street and then continue north on Carson Street from Washington Street north towards Hot Springs Road.

A Mad Scramble

One month ago, I was in a mad scramble trying to find a class for spring semester. Today, I was holding the elevator door for a Senator so we could both attend his committee hearing in a timely fashion. Tonight, as I look over my first article while awaiting the publication of my second, I can’t help but catch things that would make Paul Mitchell give me that clairvoyant look, the one where he doesn’t say anything but I can actually hear the bass of his voice in my mind saying: you are capable of doing better than this, right?

Putting Main Street on a Road Diet

On March 14th I attended a workshop presented by the Carson City Public Works Department. The presentation outlined a proposal to create a pedestrian-friendly environment on Carson Street through the downtown area of Carson City between Fifth Street and Ann Street. This Road Diet, as they are commonly called, would include using striping to reduce travel lanes from four to two, and add on-street parallel parking.

The following is the Carson City road construction and maintenance report for the week of March 18-24: Snyder Avenue is closed between E. Roland Street and Center Drive because of continued construction of the Carson City Freeway project.

Nevada sheds nation's highest unemployed status; Carson City stands at 11.2 percent

Nevada’s unemployment rate fell to seasonally adjusted 9.7 percent in January, which is the 18th straight month the state has seen a decline in the number of people unemployed. Now below Rhode Island, the Silver State is no longer considered the state with the highest unemployment rate in the country, a position it had held since February 2010.

The unemployment rate in Carson City is down 1.8 percentage points since last year and stood at 11.2 percent in January 2013.

Major road construction begins Monday on Carson City freeway

A nine-month project to build a bridge on the Carson City freeway begins Monday, according to the city's transportation manager Pat Pittenger.

Snyder Avenue will be closed between East Roland Street and Center Drive. This portion of Snyder Avenue will remain closed for about nine months to allow for the construction of the bridge. Here's a story in AroundCarson.com that helps explain the evolution of the freeway.

Carson City Public Works to host March 14 workshop on downtown Carson Street parking plan

The Carson City Public Works Department will give a presentation and conduct a workshop Thursday, March 14 to answer questions and take public comment regarding proposed plans to create a pedestrian-friendly environment on Carson Street through the downtown area.

The presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Center, Sierra Room. The public is invited to ask questions of Public Works staff regarding the project and provide comments regarding the conceptual plans.

Carson City road repair and construction report for March 4-10

Here is the Carson City road report for the week of March 4-10. There will be utility work along Old Hot Springs Road, Retail Drive, and Hot Springs Road.

The road will be open to through traffic, but there will be occasional lane closures with flagger controls.

On Thursday, March 7, there will be utility work along the south shoulder of U.S. Highway 50 east of Fairview Drive. No delays are expected but please use caution.

Nevada son and United States Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid addressed a joint session of the Nevada State Legislature today in Carson City. Here is the text of his speech:

Hit and run victim identified as John 'Randy' Boggs, a Carson City contractor

The name of the victim who died Friday morning in a pedestrian hit and run incident has been identified as John Boggs of Carson City, Sheriff Ken Furlong said.

Boggs, 46, was married and had a son in high school. Boggs, who went by "Randy" was the owner of Randy Boggs Construction and was a general contractor, his wife told Carson Now.

His wife, who didn't want to be identified at this time, said the family is hoping the person who hit and killed her husband will turn himself into authorities.

Reno agrees to $30 million deal to refinance Aces ballpark project

In a 5-2 decision the Reno City Council on Wednesday approved restructuring the financial agreements amounting to about $30 million related to the Reno Aces baseball stadium project. Council Members Brekhus and Schieve opposed the plan.
